Product Description

Horses are among the most complex creatures in the animal kingdom: so much can go wrong so quickly. And when it does, these delicate, injury prone beasts need swift treatment. Otherwise, a simple eating disorder might rapidly lead to death and a minor hoof injury to permanent lameness. To make things even more difficult, equine veterinary care is costly and insurance prohibitively expensive. That’s why any horse owner, as well as equine veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine, must have this ultimate resource on hand.
The Comprehensive Guide to Equine Veterinary Medicine is a thorough, carefully designed medical reference featuring four-color anatomical drawings by the most acclaimed veterinary illustrator Kip Carter. It covers all areas of equine health, including diagnosis and treatment, and delves into basic equine behavior and safety, preventive health care, and first aid. Twelve in-depth chapters outline the individual body systems, anatomy and physiology, and abnormalities. A Health Care section includes alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homeopathy, along with options for rehabilitation and physical therapy. Critical information appears in tables, charts, side bars, and bulleted lists for quick access.
In addition, there’s an informative history of veterinary procedures, followed by three valuable appendices with terminology, common medications, and advice for the first-time horse owner.
A selection of the Equestrian Book Club.

Widely acknowledged as the best guide to veterinary care available to the horse owner today, this comprehensive manual is now fully revised to include up-to-the-minute advice on the latest defence against new threats to the horse?s health.

Every horse owner has experienced that feeling of helplessness when something is wrong with his or her animal. It offers two cross-referenced routes for the reader to find the necessary information: via an index of known equine diseases throughout the world, covering the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of each, or via an alphabetical encyclopaedia of specific diseases. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Equine Veterinary Manual
Great investment. With The Complete Equine Veterinary Manual I can pre-diagnose my Equine friends without having to make a run to the Veterinary Clinic or calling my Vet every time. I'm not a Vet by any means, but with the extremely descriptive diagnosis and actual photos I can narrow almost anything down. I think that this book is a must have around the barn for all equine owners!!

2-0 out of 5 stars the complete equine veterinary manual
the pictures in the book are great but how the book is set up is overall not easy to find diagnoses for problems, i would not buy this book if had saw it before hand

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Equine Veterinary Manual
To me this book covered all aspects of the equine in an easily understood format; the pictures were informative; the written word simple.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Equine Veterinarian Manual
I really liked the first 2 sections, Keeping your horse healthy and the Anatomical Index of Diseases. I wish the A-z sections describing different disease was a little more in-depth. Its a little more general than I wanted but still a very very knowledgable book.

Product Description
Organized by functional neurologic system, the 3rd edition of this authoritative reference provides the most up-to-date information on neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology, and clinical neurology as it applies to small animals, horses, and food animals. Accurate diagnosis is emphasized throughout with practical guidelines for performing neurologic examinations, interpreting examination results, and formulating effective treatment plans. In-depth disease descriptions, color images, and video clips reinforce important concepts and assist with diagnosis and treatment.

  • Expert authors bring more than 50 years of experience in veterinary neuroanatomy and clinical neurology to this book - Dr. Alexander DeLahunta and Dr. Eric Glass offer their unique insights from both academic and practitioner perspectives.
  • Disease content is presented in a logical case study format with three distinct parts:
    • Description of the disorder
    • Neuroanatomic diagnosis (including how it was determined, the differential diagnosis, and any available ancillary data)
    • Course of the disease (providing final clinical or necropsy diagnosis and a brief discussion of the syndrome)

  • More than 600 full-color photographs and line drawings, plus approximately 150 high-quality radiographs, visually reinforce key concepts and assist in reaching accurate diagnoses.
  • The book comes with free access to 370 video clips on Cornell University's website that directly correlate to the case studies throughout the book and clearly demonstrate nearly every recognized neurologic disorder.
  • High-quality MR images of the brain are presented alongside correlating stained transverse sections for in-depth study and comparison.
  • Vivid photos of gross and microscopic lesions clearly illustrate the pathology of many of the disorders presented in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive but not always useful
I though this book was everything as a new grad, but now I must admit it can be hard to look stuff up in, especially if you are looking for treatment options, prognosis, differential dxs.
I have found the clinical veterinary advisor to be significantly more useful and readable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not the first internal med book I would buy
This book is great but sometimes it's too much especially if you are just starting out.The online aspect is okay, not that searchable and certainly not readable from an online perspective (can't scroll page by page.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable knowledge base for owner of a cat with heart disease
When my cat was diagnosed with heart failure, I needed to understand more about his disease. The Manual of Canine and Feline Cardiology was an eminently readable overview of the field of veterinary cardiology. However, it left me wanting a more in-depth coverage of disease types and etiologies, and for this I had to go to an older, but even more thorough text by Kittleson and Kienle, Small Animal Cardiovascular Medicine.
The main benefit I found from arming myself with this knowledge was a far better communication with the veterinarian managing my cat's case.
I highly recommend the read to anyone else in my position.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME FREAKING BOOK!
This is my favorite book of all time as I want to be a Canine Cardiologist but buyer beware. This is written for vets to read and understand so I reccomend learning your veterinary terminology well and having a veterinary dictionary. With the aid of the textbook Learning Veterinary Terminology and the dictionary Saunder's Comprehensive Veterinary dictionary I have no trouble reading this book.

If you are a breeder of a breed with a high incidence of heart problems I highly reccomend this book as it will teach you a lot about the care, identification, and management of various heart problems.

And if you are thinking about being a veterinarian I encourage you to become a veterinary cardiologist for either dogs and cats or just dogs. A health screening from a cardiologist is absoutely essential in breeding dogs of breeds prone to health problems but veterinary cardiologists are far and few between which not only creates long drives but a monopoly of sorts that lets them get away with charging insane prices. This, needless to say, is not in the best interest of eliminating congential heart problems from dog breeds. ... Read more

The book came in perfect condition just as the seller stated. I was given a tentative delivery date but the book came way before that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is a great resource for anyone who is in the veterinary field.Easy to carry every where you go.Keep in your truck, at home, at the kennel, clinic, at your desk.I love it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Most Information per Inch
Although this book is pretty expensive, it is the best one stop place for almost every drug in veterinary medicine. The 6th edition is updated with a few more drugs than the 5th edition. Each page gives you information on the drug, including brand names, categories, use and indication, action, adverse effects, how it's metabolized once in the body, drug interaction, contraindications, dosages, and more! I shopped around quite a bit before committing to buy my edition and Amazon.com had the cheapest and best quality for my dollar and have all my resources in one place!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great broad list of drugs
This is the desk version so it is small and compact to allow you to carry it with you and have easier access to it. However that does mean that there are more pages so it is quite thicker than the full size book. However, the book itself is a wonderful list of drugs - anesthetics, antibiotics, analgesics - listed in alphabetical order. It also lists pros, cons, and dosages for all situations. Great book to keep for a long time ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook
This is a great book...so informative.Any cat owner should definitely have this book in their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a cat you need this book
If you have a cat that you care for, or about, there will be times when you have questions and need clear and factual answers. This is the book you need for fast, clear answers which can save your cat's life.

By the time that you notice that something may be wrong with you cat, they may be in serious trouble. This is a book that tells you what various symptoms may mean and how serious they may be. It gives expert advice on how to care for your healthy cat, how to insure his continued health, and how to care for an injured cat until he can be transported to the vet.

It may tell you more than you really wish to know at times, but you may decide which sections you want to read and how much of them to read. Some of the illustrative photos, though very helpful, can be distressing to see. However, it is better to have more information than you want than less than you need.

No book replaces the need for good veterinarian, regular visits, or a call to see if an emergency visit is advisable, but this book gives excellent adjunct advice and tips to keep your cat healthy and safe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't replace a vet, but lets you know when you should visit one!
Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook, Fully Revised and Updated is a good basic guide to your cat's health. While it doesn't replace the vet, it can save you a trip for some simple ailments and can let you know when you should get your cat to the vet ASAP.

If you buy the book, in order to get the most out of it, I would suggest familiarizing yourself with the contents. There is an index of signs and symptoms on the front cover, a detailed contents, a general index and cross-references. This pre-work, makes it easy to quickly find what you are looking for when you need the book without a lot of fumbling. The content pages are easy to scan and find information by system (urinary, digestive, respiratory etc) or body part (eyes, nose, skin) as well as chapters on diseases, emergencies and more!

If you want a go-to reference book for your cats, this is a really good one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cat Owner's Book a must
I have two cats inside and two that have been abandoned by their original owners outside. This book has a lot of great information for treating some things at home.I did find that for most illnesses I would need to seek veterinary care. However, the book helps you to make that determination.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know and more!
I have a biomedical background and have some veterinary experience since I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger, although I never did become a vet. Many years ago I got the dog owner's version of this handbook and referred to it when my dog got older and became sick.Because of my experience with the dog owner's version, I knew I wanted the cat owner's version.

I found "The Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" to be well written and easy to use.It does not overwhelm the reader with veterinary medical terminology and is easily understood by the average cat owner. It is easy to find information using the "Signs and Symptoms" and "General" indexes. There is more information than you will probably ever want to know or need to know; however, it is all worthwhile having available in the event your cat gets ill.

I am reading and skimming through the handbook.Even if you just keep it on your bookshelf just in case your cat gets sick, "The Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" is a VERY worthwhile purchase. ... Read more
