4-0 out of 5 stars Saunder's Vet Dictionary 3rd Ed.
Great definitions: very complete, concise, and understandable. Clear diagrams and photos illustrated some definitions. Every word I have looked up has been included. Very helpful tables in the appendix section listing all the muscles, nerves, vessels and more (complete with origin and insertion of each muscle).

The only frustration I had with this dictionary is that it is HUGE! Other reviews claimed it was handy and portable, but I have to leave it at home since there is no way it will fit in my backpack with my other textbooks and laptop. Dimensions: 9 x 7.5 x 3 inches, about 3-4 lbs.

Overall, great dictionary, quite large. I've used it almost every day since I got it and would highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary
Recieved my new Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary (Soft Cover) Just loved it! I recieved it fast, and I thank you. Sue

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY comprehensive...MUCH better than the bailliers
LOVE this dictionary..am studying for the VTNE and I have used this one over and over without fail...other dictionary I had..was always short of information..I have yet to be disappointed with this one. Has great pics too! Would buy again and highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very handy
We purchased this Veterinary Dictionary for the office staff. Everyone who has used it has found it very useful and easy to find the information they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get the 3rd edition! (or later)
- I used to have the previous edition of this Dictionary (2nd ed., 1998) and would consult it only sporadically. Now that I purchased the 3rd edition, I usually read at least one definition per day. Call me superficial, but I find this new edition much more appealing!

- What has changed:
*Illustrations! You'll find them about once every 5 pages or so. I think the authors should have featured more illustrations/photographs, but the ones you find in the text are not gratuitous (they really give you a better understanding of the definition).
*On a lighter note, my previous edition was in Portuguese (I am a Brazilian monkey). My present one (3rd ed, 2007) is the original American English version, and I think it reads better. I can only conclude that translating dictionaries is a dangerous task.
*Superior paper quality (glossy-more suitable for viewing illustrations), pages have a prettier design.
*Anatomical charts in the appendix are more organized and looking sharper.
*New definitions (not many, though).

- I kindly disagree with the user who mentioned Stedman's Medical Dictionary as a better option. Sure, Stedman's definitions are more authoritative, but I took two definitions (namely, abscess and anemia) for comparison and don't think one would be at much loss by going with Saunders Vet Dictionary. Plus, there are many important references to veterinary species in this Dictionary (associating common diseases, breed predispositions etc.), and that is something one will not find in Stedman's.

- I like this text better than Black's Student Veterinary Dictionary (Black's Veterinary Dictionary). Black's is not a bad Dictionary, in fact many of its definitions are longer (two paragraphs or more) and really comprehensive. However, it's not nearly as complete as Saunders Vet Dictionary (sometimes I can't find very simple terms in Black's, no mention to the more specific definitions which are lacking). Also, I feel there is a tendency in Black's to emphasize large animal species, sometimes not acknowledging the very existence of small animals/zoo species/exotics/myself. The horse illustration on the cover reflects this bias very well. ... Read more

Product Description
The Health of Poultry, by Mark Pattison, is a unique book describing the overall concepts of poultry health with the emphasis on creating the right conditions and environment to minimise the occurrence of disease. By demonstrating the interrelationships between husbandry, medicine and nutrition, the author shows how to prevent diseases and to maximise the genetic potential made possible with modern breeds of poultry. Each of the main poultry species - chicken including breeder and broiler, turkey and duck - is dealt within separate chapters that each explain the principle of disease control with the emphasis on preventative medicine. All aspects of care are drawn together to provide guidance on devising a rigorous health regime that is controlled by proper management. Chapters on hatchery, nutrition, environment and housing examine topics such as planning, ventilation, hygiene, quality control and medication. The important role of genetics in flock health is discussed encompassing important issues such as genetic resistance to disease, vertically transmitted diseases and strategies for disease control. The Health of Poultry provides a holistic view of health and welfare of poultry. As such, it will be a highly practical addition to the bookshelves of poultry farmers, specialists and veterinarians. Agriculture and veterinary students embarked on BSc and diploma courses in poultry will find the coverage informative and the style lucid and accessible ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars perfect
usefull book for veterinary proff. You can buy and use it every part of your bussiness

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as having Deb down the hall...
I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr. Silverstein and many of the chapter authors in this book. It certainly is a handy reference on a plethora of topics. It's my go to book when I want a quick overview of the background to a topic with just enough details/indepth material to satisfy the majority of my questions. Between this book and a few others my critical care needs are pretty much handled (don't cringe Deb, but some of us still use/need/love Plunkett- and certainly Dibartola has its uses).

I will say that the organization/page numbering system has always given me a bit of trouble, but its been well worth the effort.

I think its a good reference- not only for the ECC crew- but also other specialists (I'm a neurologist), emergency docs and GPs. Let's face it, we all deal with a sickie occaisionally and its nice to have some books on the shelf to help you out when you are trying to calculate pressor doses at midnight.

As to the neurology chapters- I think they are well written and helpful. I reviewed them for my board exam and found the information to be accurate and up to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for ICU vets
I purchased this book through the Amazon associate shop [...]
Emergency work is an exciting field for veterinarians. The numerous authors are comprised of a 'who's-who' of the veterinary emergency world. I found this book particularly useful in coverage of common and uncommon scenarios an emergency vet is faced with on a daily basis. Internal medicine topics like acute pancreatitis and acute renal failure are also tackled from a different angle or ICU perspective, compared with 'traditional' internal medicine texts. There is fantastic coverage on respiratory emergencies including ARDS and PTE, cardiovascular disorders, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, fluid therapy, acute endocrine presentations, in-depth discussion of various intoxicatins seen in emergency practice, neurological disorders (including a chapter on CSF sampling), infectious disorders, haematological disorders, intraabdominal disorders including management of peritonitis and GDV, urogenital disorders and trauma events. Colour plates depicting various emergency procedures such as chest tube placement etc... There are also chapters on hard-to-find topics such as mechanical ventilation, ICU care of post-operative patients, colloid osmotic pressure and osmolality monitoring, blood gas monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, capnography, anaesthesia and analgesia of critically ill patients, and an extensive section on drugs commonly used in veterinary emergency and ICU wards. All-in-all, a worthy read and essential text to have on the emergency room shelf. This book has been a long-time coming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pocket pet book
I'm not a pocket pet expert at all, so this is my "go to" book when I get a small critter in.Lots of information, and very easy to navigate.Nice drug charts in the back too.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent veterinary reference
I have the previous edition of "the pink book", and knowledge has advanced in these species such that I desperately needed the new edition. An excellent text that is a must have if you see small mammal patients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!....This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often.I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is very nice...very very informative and with lots of information for small animal medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for NAVLE review
I used this book while studying for the NAVLE and I felt it was a good concise review. I am keeping it for review of topics while I am on internship. It is very good at reviewing the important stuff and not going into alot of fluff. The content is divided by system and that is nice. Then for each system, the first part is background info (like general anatomy and physiology you need to know about that system) and then the second part is the specific diseases of that system.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Impressions
The appearance of this book is rather uninspiring and with its emphasis on National Boards and Clinical Competency Tests it may seem irrelevant for students in the UK.However there are a few clues on the cover which hint at something very useful contained within; e.g. quick, accessible, reference.

There are two main parts to the book. The first provides a source of approaches to over 38 different presenting signs in order to assist in diagnosis. Each of these chapters is clearly set out with definitions, causes, clinical findings, diagnostic approaches to help you eliminate and select from lists of differential diagnoses. It is a great provider of easily understood tables of differential lists and possible tests to distinguish between the diseases. The second part works through the main conditions of each organ system and the diagnosis and treatments for each disease. This is done in somewhat more detail than the first part but there are still sufficient diagrams and tables to make the essential information readilyavailable. Throughout the book there are sections of questions to help you revise the previous topics.

Although you may not believe that such a large topic can be anything but superficially covered in a book of this size, there is an amazing amount of information here. It's a bit like Mary Poppins' magic carpetbag, it is hard to believe how much is contained within these pages. The authors have been concise not brief. No space is wasted with in depth discussions of pathophysiology or various treatment regimes but relevant preclinical information is covered. OK so you couldn't use it for writing an essay or as a sole provider of information for internal medicine but to help prompt your memory during revision and as a speedy reference this book is far superior to any of the completely comprehensive texts. Don't forget you should never judge a book by its cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book if you are willing to work at it!
I am familiar with most comprehensive books on Small Animal Internal Medicine but I did not know the National Veterinary Medical Series (intended as a preparation for the National Board Examination). This book is an excellent compendium of all you should know on the subject but does not spoon-feed you what yo should know before hand (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, semiology, etc.). If you are willing to brush-up these areas on your own, this book is excellent: it gives you all he information you need to diagnose and treat most internal diseases of dogs and cats in the shortest space. Read slowly, thought, it is packed with information and every line counts! At $ 35, is a GREAT deal! ... Read more

Product Description
Preface:This volume, Fundamental Principles, is the first of four books which comprise the textbook Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. As a collabroative work, it has developed into an update and expansion of the text Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Published in 1994 by Dr. Huisheng Xie. This volume intends to clarify the basic principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. We have created this text for several reasons. First, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine has been used to treat animals for thousands of years in China. Only in recent history have practices such as acupuncture and herbal therapy come into use in the Western World. The majority of the literature about these traditional techniques is written in Chinese and is inaccessible to most Westerners. Because of the paucity of texts in the English language regarding these techniques, we hope this text will fill some gaps in the current knowledge. This is especially true of the basic philosophies and principles of traditional medicine for with English-language information is quite deficient. For this reason, we dedicate the entire first volume to the underlying principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.Second, we wish to create a ook which would be a relevant, functional resource for veterinarians and students who wish to apply these principles. For this reason, we intend to present the material in a practical manner and to illustrate these principles with case examples and questions at the end of the chapters. In addition, the final chapter of this book consists of numerous, lengthy case studies with descriptions and explanations of all the findings and treatments. It is our hope that this will promote understanding of how one may apply these principles to clinical cases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is an excellent book- it has even been adopted as the official textbook for the national veterinary board examination for clinical pathology. I had the privilege of working with both Dr. Harvey and Dr. Meyer while at the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of the UF School of Veterinary Medicine as a veterinary technician, and feel they are ultimately qualified to write on this subject. This book has been translated into Chinese as well. Not an easy feat, but I think it shows how much this book is valued here and abroad.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding addition to your library
The third edition of this textbook provides a well-illustrated, up-to-date and comprehensive account of veterinary laboratory medicine in an interesting and user-friendly format. The distinguished authors have succeeded in providing readers with excellent figures, legends, and concise narratives that provide a rich, broad-based resource for understanding and interpreting abnormalities encountered in lab animal medicine. This well-referenced text is recommended for the library's of all serious students, residents, pathologists, and practicing veterinarians.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this book.....
This book has never been of any help to me. I bought it a few years after graduating from vet school and it has NEVER had any information I can find when I want to look something up. The case study format makes finding anything useful a nightmare. A terrific alternative book that I've used for years (and I just bought the newest edition) is Small Animal Clinical Diagnosis By Laboratory Methods- Michael D. Willard, Harold, Ph.D. Tvedten. It always has an excellent explanation of any clin path question I have.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of money
This book has proven to be absolutly useless to me.I am a third year vet student, and every time i picked up this book to look something up, the information i needed was nowhere to be found in the book.it is the biggest waste of 65 dollars i ever spent in my life.i DO NOT reccomend this book.all the information this book has is nothing that you cant find in any of your general physiology/pathology/histology books.dont waste your money.for more specific clin path information, find another book.i hear Maryanne Thrall is coming out with one in a few months, so if you can wait for hers, she is the queen of clin path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Laboratory Medicine Interpretation & Diagnosis

Overall it's a great value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - read before Exams!
This is a fine text for the subject. It is very thorough in content, well organized, has self test questions with some answers, and includes a CD if you prefer the computer to the paper. The content is almost overwhelming, expecially for just in 1 semester.I would like to have more time to read this book slowly and digest it.I will not be re-selling mine; will go over again before National Board Exam. Also tells you how to read a prescription and calculate dosages based on percentages, reading labels, review of the metric system, etc. The reading is informative, a little bit dry, but certainly manageable. Worth the price as a new book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another must!
Great book; easy reading. Haven't finished it yet or used the CD but its still great! Goes indepth, but not repetitive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Physiology
This is a great book. I especially like the before chapter review. It is good to read before you read the rest of the chapter because you already have the basics down and are ready for the "nitty gritty" details. It is a bit brief however, and you may need to consult other sources if you want/need more information/explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
    Textbook of Veterinary Physiology

It is an excellent book! I received in perfect shape! Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, lot's of info
This was the Physio book my Vet Phys class used. It is absolutely amazing. There is tons of info, yet it is interesting and somewhat easy to read. The chapters on Cardio are especially good, and there are many helpful diagrams.
The case examples at the end of each chapter really help you to apply your knowledge.
I gave only four stars because there are no color pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for your veterinary library...
This book is a must for any veterinary student. My class was using a human physiolgy book, which was very informative, but was frustrating to use.The textbook of Veterinary Physiology is easy to read and well organized and has many tables and illustrations to help you understand the material. There are even case studies in the book that help you apply the information.I gave this book 4 stars, because while very informative, it does leave out a few things (those topics can usually be found in a medical physiology book).Overall, this book is a very good supplementation to veterinary students whose classes use a medical physiology book as their primary text. The only other downer (this is minor) is that the tables and diagrams are all black and white.Color diagrams would be a nice upgrade in the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me!
My physiology teacher wasn't the best, so I was VERY glad to have this book. It's very concise, yet extraordinarily well explained, with helpful illustrations. I'm not sure what I would have done this semester without it! Highly recommended. ... Read more
