Product Description
In the 6 years since the bestselling first edition of the BSABA Manual of Rabbit Medicine and Surgery was published, the field has changed dramatically and there has been a significant increase in our understanding of rabbit health and disease.

The increase in knowledge is reflected in this second edition, not only by the increase in length but also by the addition of four new chapters. General nursing care and hospital supportive care required for these patients. Diagnostic imaging uses specially drawn illustrations to explain optimal positioning, and includes both normal and abnormal radiographs plus ultrasound, CT and MRI images. Cardiovascular disorders describes diagnostics, including a useful table of ECG values, and medical management of cardiac and vascular problems. Finally, the new chapter on Dentistry builds on the information given in the first edition and illustrates both the diagnostic approach and treatment of common conditions.

The introduction of a new co-editor and some new authors has brought new insights and opinions to several areas. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good pictures
The BSAVA Manual of Rabbit Medicine is an assemblage of chapters covering different aspects of rabbit medicine and husbandry. Its strongest point, in my opinion, is the number of good pictures. Its weakest point is that it tries to cover too much, so many areas of rabbit medicine are not covered well.

I use Francis Harcourt-Brown's book on Rabbit Medicine and Surgery along with the BSAVA book. They complement each other well.Harcourt-Brown's book covers medical topics more completely. The BSAVA book has good photographs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Very satisfied with purchase. It is in great condition.I bought this book both for me to become more familiar with the different instruments and also for my clinic. This book has helped us manage our inventory with greater success.

4-0 out of 5 stars Veterinary instrument book - quick ref
This book is a very handy quick reference book. Especially for the instrument the doctor hasn't used in 5 years but suddenly wants - and nobody knows what he's talking about! Pictures and descriptions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad/ Not Great
Nicely Organized but you will probably find this information in your school text book.Would be helpful for clincs that are teaching techs that have not attended formal training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a gap left by other books
I'd recommend this to anyone new to working as an assistant or in tech school. It's the only resource I've seen that clearly identifies (includes crisp, close-up photos for every item) and clearly explains what tons of veterinary instruments & other tools are for.

* It is EXACT. At our clinic we all had trouble identifying the exact difference between brown adson, plain adson, blah blah forceps and though we looked online, in instrument catalogs, etc.--this is the only place I found definitive answers.

* I love that there is a description of what each item is actually used for. It adds another layer of understanding of my job and helps me select the right tool for a given task. Also helps me anticipate what tools the doctor is going to need whether he's removing a small mass from an eyelid or spreading someone's ribs open.

* It is useful in learning the items you don't use often enough to know. We have any number of old weird-looking tools in our clinic left by the previous owner that we use on rare occasions but it's hard to know what half of them are called, let alone what they're for. Now when the doctor calls for something obscure I might actually be able to go get it!

*It exposes you to tools outside your immediate area of practice--if you mostly know small animal stuff this book shows you food animal and equine tools so you have a clue. Horn gouge, teat dilator, radiographic hoof positioner, you name it. I even learned that the old shepherd's crook you see in cartoons is a real tool "to separate and capture sheep"--and, in a very rudimentary way, how it works.

*Some of the tools seem too basic to bother including, but I've learned a little new info even on some of those. For example, I didn't know there's a special kind of nail clipper for those overgrown curlicue toenails that are so hard to cut--and we even have it in our clinic, but didn't know what it was.

*It's organized in 23 chapters by logical categories such as instruments for administering medicine, dental instruments, orthopedic instruments, instruments used for hoof care, instruments for animal identification, and instruments used for pigs, sheep, and goats.

* It includes a comprehensive index so you can search for a tool by name.

* It includes a section on proper care of surgical instruments.

* I love the format--spiral bound with index-card size pages, and the cover even has a fold-over flap to help protect the pages.

Bottom line--really useful book idea, well-executed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians
Ideal book for animal technicians and vet nurses.Doesnt provide all the information you will find in the Veterinary Nursing books but does get very descriptive in the areas it does cover.Information does move from canine and feline to large animal so not all chapters can relevantly be understood for specific animals.

This book is marketed at the boards- Im a veterinary student in Ireland. I did find certain parts of it relating to - "Only found in mid western region" etc not very helpful but on the whole this book is great. It gives concise, pertinent and diagnosable information for the veterinary student....would also be useful for the practictioner as a quick reference to update or brush up on information.
I have found in very helpful in the problem based learning modules we have to take in college. Its not the most detailed book in the world and would never be used to supplement as a textbook but as an overview and quick reference its great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Covering most aspects of important large animal diseases, I believe this good can be very helpfull not only for veterinary students but also for veterinary teacher. Without entering in too much detail, who reads it will understand the basics of a specif disease. Obviously it could cover much more diseases and more deeply, but it would be much more expensive and probably put interested readers away.

1-0 out of 5 stars pages missing
i have reordered this book two times.it has pages missing. i raise bobby calves and the crucial pages that i index are missing. i am assuming that this book is not available complete which makes it useless. it was given to me as a gift from my son who spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 140.00.he is out the money and i am dissatisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars ignore those below
A fabulous mine of information, the textbook to turn to, it has pride of place on my shelf

1-0 out of 5 stars Of little use to the academic or practioner.
If you know the diagnosis then good descriptions of the clinical signs and pathogenesis are usually available. However having ploughed through the verbose text, which is in remarkably bad type face, you are rewarded with aminimal treatment section which is extremely frustrating. Copioslyreferenced the book is of little use alone requirring a good library and aserach engine to obtain up to date information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable for food animals. Hopeless for horses.
I bought the seventh edition of this book whilst a veterinary student, and it has gathered dust. Although there is a great deal of information in this book, which is easily accessed (an advantage over Smith's Large AnimalInternal Medicine), it is too brief for serious research and tooopinionated for a quick reference. This reviewer also finds the styledifficult to read. If the diagnosis is unknown, this is an almostimpossible book to refer to and the avoidance of differential listscontributes to this.

For the equine veterinarian, I wouldrecommend Reedand Bayly's 'Equine internal medicine', which is more thorough and betterwritten. For the food animal veterinarian, this book is a possible choice, but it is my opinion that 'Smith', despite its flaws, is a better buy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars mistakes found
while the book arrived as described and on time i found that some pages were ommitted from a section of the book while others were duplicated

1-0 out of 5 stars Some mistakes
After reading good reviews, I asked for and received this book as a birthday present late last year. As I flipped through the first section (Pharmacology), however, I noticed some glaring mistakes and omissions which have made me doubt the veracity of the info throughout the whole book.

Some mistakes: dexamethazone is listed as 'long acting' IM, IV, SC, PO, while Depo-Medrol is listed as intermediate acting (along with prednisone); pimobendan listed as 'available in Canada and Europe'--t's been available in this country for quite a few years, and this is the 2009 edition I'm reviewing; benazepril is listed as an "Angiotensin Converting Enzyme" (!) rather than an ACE-inhibitor, while enalapril is listed as an ACE-I all by itself; enalapril is listed as 'give on an empty stomach'; Pepto-Bismol carries no warning not to use in cats; and the most egregious mistake is listing methylene blue as a reversal agent for Valium! Yep, it's listed in the 'antidotes and reversing agents' section, and of course doesn't carry a warning about how it kills cats. There is no mention of flumazenil so I don't know what was supposed to be listed as a reversal for benzodiazepines. The methylene blue is probably in there as an antidote for acetominophen toxicity though it has largely been supplanted by n-acetylcysteine b/c of safety issues.

Some omissions: immipenem/meropenem from antibiotics; fentanyl from opioids; atenolol and sotalol not listed as beta-blockers (these are the two most commonly used in cats & dogs); mexiletine and sotalol from anti-arrhythmics (the two most common used PO in dogs); fenbendazole is now an accepted treatment for Giardia (not listed as such); hydrochlorathiazide from diuretics; maropitant from anti-emetics; xylazine from emetics.

I would hesitate to trust the book now because I can see so many errors in the info I'm already familiar with--who knows how many mistakes are in the info I am not familiar with? The purpose of a reference book isn't, of course, to read and then have to verify the info independently; I just want to read it and trust it which I certainly can't do now (seriously, methylene blue??).

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Information per Inch

4-0 out of 5 stars very useful and quick to use
It's a pocket book very complete, very easy to consult, with the basic concepts ready to apply. Indispensable to wear when you are working and have a doubt.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a vet tech and keep this in my pocket most days
This has been a great pocket review for me on every day stuff being that I was out of the field for a while and needed helpful refreshers like how to do a urinanalysis, identifying parasites, instruments and such. This is a great gift for a vet tech or a great helpful pocket guide. I think it is a bit over priced but its still quite handy. Would buy again and recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for reference!
This book is a must have for any veterinary student who wants an excellent book with quick, concise information on most diseases and conditions in veterinary medicine. It highlights the most important information pertinent to the disease or condition w/o getting bogged down in too many details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for senior veterinary students
This is a great book for your senior year. I have used it daily on all of my small animal rotations thus far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Veterinary Reference for General Practice
This is the best reference book for general practice. It has nearly everything you will need at hand quickly....similar to the 5 Minute Consult, it also includes a section on how to perform certain hospital procedures (with photos), a section with algorithms and another section that describes many laboratory tests and how to perform them correctly. If there is one book you should have in clinical practice, this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books I own
I bought this book to help write SOAPs during fourth year of vet school but will treasure it for a long time. When I brought it with me to my outside clinical experience and used it with real cases it not only provided fast and easily accessed insight, it had great and easy to use instructions right in the text. The veterinarians at the clinic bought a copy for themselves before I left.It doesn't go into detail like a medicine book, but it provides a concise source of information that helps you know where to look and helps to remind you what else you should be considering.

For instance, under treatment for ventricular tachycardia it doesn't just say to start a lidocaine CRI, it actually says how much lidocaine to add to what size bag of fluids to make the desired concentration and how fast to give it to achieve the administration rate recommended. This is very helpful at 3am.

The only thing I would change is the differential lists. While some of these lists are provided in the book, most are only available online, which is very inconvenient when you don't always have ready access to a computer that is online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for vet school and in practice
As a new small animal vet, this is my number one "go to" book for just about everything.Diagnostics, differentials, techniques, treatments, clin path, formulary, etc.I really wish I had found this book while in vet school as it would have been a great help. This book, for me, has more useful information than the 5min Vet Consult and contains a much wider variety of information. You don't even have to have a diagnosis as you can look things up by symptom (i.e. coughing, ocular discharge, abdominal pain). I do find it a bit frustrating that some of the content is only available online, but I guess making the book thicker with the additional content wouldn't really be practical. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Goat Medicine - comprehensive analysis
This is an excellent book for someone that works well with details and cross-references.I might not recommend it as a book for beginners (they will probably be overwhelmed)but it is a great book for someone that has a sizable herd.Very much beyond the basics. Would like for it to have discussed medications and dosages in more detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fully revised second edition offering a definitive, updated reference on goat diseases, diagnosis, management and prevention

5-0 out of 5 stars Very concise.
I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a reference that is very short and concise. It's not necessarily going to cover everything you need to know.It breaks drugs up by categories and spends about 1-2 pages on them. The first paragraph gives a background on physiology, and then the rest focuses on drug mechanisms and uses. The figures in the book are large and focus on location of action of the different drugs mentioned. ...
