4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Reference
I found this book helpful in my preperation for the exam. It is a listed reference by NCEES, and will be useful for the exam and in practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, poor support
Metcalf and Eddy's Wastewater Engineering series is always good, but new editions of any book seem to have mistakes in the examples. The one that's bugging me ( it's the only one I've tried so far) is Example 4-10, concerning the time required to absorb a gas. The book gets a V value of 10; I get 1200. There's obviously something that needs explaining here, but I've been unable to get any help from either Metcalf & Eddy or McGraw Hill. My e-mails don't seem to get to anyone who can help, or they're being ignored.
It seems to be a good book, but if you have any questions you're on your own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wish there was something better out there.
Although this book is one of the largest information sources for WWTP design, it is also poorly formatted and illogical in presentation of material. The reason is because it is a compilation of many individuals so there is much redundancy, some conflicting information and incoherency in the overall text.If you are looking to LEARN how to design a WWTP you will need a good aid in addition to this text.Otherwise, it isfine if you know what you are looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Catalog
I bought this huge volume so I could develop some puzzles in our magazine. Chemical engineers need to expand into this area largely inhabited by misplaced civil engineers. As water shortages become more prevalent, continuous recycling of water will become a necessity in chemical plants. Then, there is the cost of process chemicals needed to treat water. Many of these are hazardous wastes. You will need to know what your options are for conditioning these waters.

The author covers every form of wastewater treatment in significant detail for its genre (handbooks). I especially liked the block diagrams showing process steps. As with most handbooks, more examples would improve its use. However, with that aside, it shares a space on my shelf.

If this review helped, add your vote.

3-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Information, Riddled with Typos and Omissions
I have been using this text in a wastewater engineering course. It covers the different aspects of wastewater engineering well, providing in depth treatments of each. However, the great size of this book (over 1800 pages) may also be its weakness, making it an unmanageable project for the editors.

In one month of usage, I have found serious gaps in the problems. Many cross-references are incorrect, and there are some problems which omit values required for solution.

In short, this is a good source of information. With closer editing, it could be better. ... Read more

Book Description
Step-by-step procedures for planning, design, construction and operation: * Health and environment* Process improvements* Stormwater and combined sewer control and treatment* Effluent disposal and reuse* Biosolids disposal and reuse* On-site treatment and disposal of small flows* Wastewater treatment plants should be designed so that the effluent standards and reuse objectives, and biosolids regulations can be met with reasonable ease and cost. The design should incorporate flexibility for dealing with seasonal changes, as well as long-term changes in wastewater quality and future regulations. Good planning and design, therefore, must be based on five major steps:characterization of the raw wastewater quality and effluent, pre-design studies to develop alternative processes and selection of final process train, detailed design of the selected alternative, contraction, and operation and maintenance of the completed facility. Engineers, scientists, and financial analysts must utilize principles from a wide range of disciplines: engineering, chemistry, microbiology, geology, architecture, and economics to carry out the responsibilities of designing a wastewater treatment plant. The objective of this book is to present the technical and nontechnical issues that are most commonly addressed in the planning and design reports for wastewater treatment facilities prepared by practicing engineers. Topics discussed include facility planning, process description, process selection logic, mass balance calculations, design calculations, and concepts for equipment sizing. Theory, design, operation and maintenance, trouble shooting, equipment selection and specifications are integrated for each treatment process. Thus delineation of such information for use by students and practicing engineers is the main purpose of this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Water has been described as the 21st century oil. Water shortages, water quality and water rights are hot-button issues at the local, national and international levels. Climate change, population growth and contamination from industry, farms and human settlements have dramatically impacted water supplies and disrupted natural nutrient cycles. Strategic wastewater management will be a critical tool in protecting this valuable but threatened resource.

Reusing the Resource is a comprehensive guide to using plants to stabilize, clean, filter and reuse wastewater, while simultaneously eliminating expensive and polluting sewers and septic systems. The book profiles more than 30 successful ecological wastewater recycling systems that save money, protect public and environmental health, and provide plant-based fuel, fiber, construction materials, habitat and landscapes. It details the pros and cons of various systems, and provides tips for designers, regulators and builders. Case studies include:

  • a greenhouse-enclosed wastewater aquaculture system
  • a regional wastewater-recycling plant
  • a city's wastewater-treatment wetland
  • graywater planters.

This book is a must-read for engineers, landscape designers, clean water advocates and property owners. 3-0 out of 5 stars fourth edition overdue!
there is a bit of truth in all the above reviews. It has not entirely been my bible, but more a Readers Digest version; if I need a quick answer, it is the first book I grab. Yes there are a lot of mathematical mistakes ormisprints in it,and that includes a good number of the worked examples, which rather defeats the purpose. Yes it is very American orientated, butit also has tables and footnotes throughout, giving useful or immediateconversions to other systems, well, metric that is, not imperial. There area lot nicer processes about, some definitely European. But that misses thepoint a bit: the most fundamental problem is that the book is nearly tenyears old. Therefore it is not surprising that newer processes are missing.I am desperately looking forward to a fourth edition, and I'll be the firstto buy it! In the meantime I'll keep using the third. But what happened tothe (Indian) paperback version, which was a lot better priced for a book ofthis age? Still, there is no substitute!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from a process engineer
The book gives the modern process engineer enough background to engineer complete waste water treatment plants. Specially the biological part is very good. Only at the physical chemical part, the information is based oninstallations produced in the US. The European (nicer) designes anddevelopments are not described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible and encyclopaedia of wastewater engineering
I first got exposed to the textbook as an undergraduate student in civil engineering.Served as an excellent in depth textbook for that level.During my masters program it was a good starting point. As a consultingengineer, I can find most of the basic and fundamental answers.Thelanguage is lucid and simple.I have read lots of books on wastewaterengineering.Agreed that there are more detailed texts available onspecific areas of wastewater treatment, but this textbook does a very goodjob of striking that balance just right of covering material in enoughdetail for students and the practising engineer. It is usually enoughunless you are writing a masters thesis or a doctoral dissertation.Thistext, together with the companion textbook, Collection and Pumping ofWastewater has served me very well during my college and professionalcareer.Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good book on wastewatertreatment.I very respectfully disagree with the gentleman from Istanbulabove who feels that this book is poor. When taking my PE exam, if I wasto be limited to just one textbook on wastewater, I would take this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic but not suitable as a textbook.
This book contains large amount of information and therefore it may be argued that it is an important reference in the field. Unfortunately, as a textbook for undergraduate teaching, it is terrible. There are severalmistakes in the solved examples. Problems at the end of each chapter arenot well prepared. Solving the problems at the end of a chapter do notnecessarily contribute to a better understanding of the material containedin that chapter.

A large number of equations related to the activatedsludge process are presented, but they are not well connected. How theseequations can be systematically used in design is neither well explainednor well exemplified. Overall, this book is not suitable for self-studywithout the guidance of an experienced instructor/engineer who also haspractical experience in wastewater plant design and operation.

Thenagain, there are very few good books in this field (if any). The field ofwater and wastewater treatment certainly needs good authors/teachers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite must for the ENVIRONMENTAL PE EXAM.
This book was of great necessity on the PE exam and I wouldn't have been able to do much without it.A definite must for your bookshelf. ... Read more

Product Description
Originaly this manual was developed to serve as a home-study course for operators in remote areas or pearsons unable to attend formal classes either due to shift work, personal reasons or the unavailability of suitable classes. This home-study training program used th concepts of self-paced instruction where you are your own instructor and work at your own speed. In order to certify that a person had successfully completed this program, an objective test was included at the end of each chapter and the training course became a correspondence or self-study type of program. Now many colleges and universities use the manual as a formal text in formal classes often taught by operators. In the operation of wastewater treatment plants, operators and utility agencies joined together to offer their own courses using the manual. This manual was prepared to help operators run their tretment plants. Please feel free to use it in the manner which best fits your training needs and the needs of other operators. We will be happy to work with you to assist you in developing your training program. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Drying up this mess.
I work for a small municipal wastewater plant, and used this (and Vol. II) as study material for the Class IV and Class III VA wastewater licensure test.

It is:
- Informative
- Long winded

It is not:
- Fun to read in the least
- A very good reference manual
- Very up to date on some things

Overall the California State training books are recommended to me by more people than any other training courses. If you're doing this with the correspondence portion, you can get 2-3 "TC's" (2-3 months substitution experience) for at most a month of your time at less than an hour a day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wastewater Treatment and God: The Divine Practice of Cleansing Waters
This book was as interesting as it was informative. I thoroughly enjoyed its textual inputs and laughable (yet sidebar) visual anecdotes. The book holds a wide variety of truth, even in the first volume!

God really showed up in my life while reading this book. I cannot tell you the ways He has blessed me with knowing the ins and outs of this world's wastewater. The application from spiritual to physical, and then from physical to chemical was amazing. It brought out how God really works in today's crappy lives and "poopy" situations. This book invites you to "come as you are" (pgs. 17 and 264) and that the Spirit of God is welcome "in this place" (pg. 159) and even better, "All organic materials have one thing in common - they all contain carbon" (pg. 20). You see, carbon here is a metaphor for the forgiveness of sins!

The main point of this book (although some may disagree) was how a phenom of a God could turn excretion into life. It was just another beautiful allegory of how Jesus cleanses even the dirtiest of dirties.

The removal and decomposition of bacteria and dissolved oxygen can apply to anybody's spiritual life. And as my little brother used to say when he was 2: "Mommy, I gotta go numba 2! ... oops... too late!"

Would I recommend this book to any and all people? Yes. Oh God yes. On a scale from 1 to heck, I give this theological genius of a scientific tale a standing "heck"! Bravo US Environmental Protection Agency... you simply put the "treat" in "wastewater treatment". God bless readers! ... Read more
