4-0 out of 5 stars Good product, long shipping time
The product came in great condition, just as described. It came on the latest possible day within the range of dates it might have been delivered, taking 2 weeks to reach me, but it did come and it was in very satisfactory condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
This is the International version. It is great and has both SI and English units.I have not compared it to the hard cover, but this one is great - well worth the money (and savings).

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard Engineering Reference for Wastewater Engineering
My need was to get up to speed rapidly on ultra violet disinfection. While I was waiting for the book to arrive, I spent several hours on the internet. When the book came in, it tied together all the "bits" I picked up thru my search and provided more detail on some of the critical aspects.

3-0 out of 5 stars fourth edition overdue!
there is a bit of truth in all the above reviews. It has not entirely been my bible, but more a Readers Digest version; if I need a quick answer, it is the first book I grab. Yes there are a lot of mathematical mistakes ormisprints in it,and that includes a good number of the worked examples, which rather defeats the purpose. Yes it is very American orientated, butit also has tables and footnotes throughout, giving useful or immediateconversions to other systems, well, metric that is, not imperial. There area lot nicer processes about, some definitely European. But that misses thepoint a bit: the most fundamental problem is that the book is nearly tenyears old. Therefore it is not surprising that newer processes are missing.I am desperately looking forward to a fourth edition, and I'll be the firstto buy it! In the meantime I'll keep using the third. But what happened tothe (Indian) paperback version, which was a lot better priced for a book ofthis age? Still, there is no substitute!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from a process engineer
The book gives the modern process engineer enough background to engineer complete waste water treatment plants. Specially the biological part is very good. Only at the physical chemical part, the information is based oninstallations produced in the US. The European (nicer) designes anddevelopments are not described in the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK for wastewater engineering
If you are an engineer who works in the wastewater field, you need this book... and probably already have it.Simply indespensible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
This book is well written and relatively easy to read.It has proved to be very helpful in my Biological Principles of Environmental Engineering Class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's my book
Its very nice of you to e-mail me and ask for my comments, but I think it would be even nicer if I actually received the book.I am STILL waiting...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wastewater Bible
I have used Metcalfe and Eddy's Wastewater Engineering from 3rd to 4th editions, and cannot think of a more comprehensive resource for all aspects of wastewater engineering from process design through to odour management through to water and sludge recycling.

The use of SI system in 4th edition is great and I agree with other users, the Bible is getting so big that it needs a searchable PDF to find references quickly.

The process equations have been updated to COD type design from older BOD standards, and allow for ease of process selection, with a good overview of strengths and weaknesses of each treatment type for attached growth, suspended processes and even advanced oxidation processes for removing remaining inorganics.

If there could be said to be a weakness perhaps there is one for tropical water temperatures of 32-35 degrees celcius, but this is dependant on the literature and research community due to lack of hi-tech development in the tropics.

I have tags on pages that are much used to speed access, wouldn't recommend students carry it as it is very big.

Unlike some expensive env engineering texts, this one is worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Handbook
I am completely satisfied with this purchase, as it is sufficiently detailed to be of immediate use, but not so theoretical as to lose a reader who is new to the subject. The book covers industry practice as well as theory, and the mathematics presented are thoroughly developed. Many books of this sort offer formulas, but no background to assist in applying them to specific situations. This book provides all that and more, and I found it to be a lifesaver when I was assigned to design a new sewer line. As an electrical engineer I have no previous experience in this field, but this book provided a crash course of immeasurable value. In fact, 30 days after purchasing it, my first sewer line design is being installed, and I've already found solutions to several long standing problems in our water distribution system! Rarely have I found so much practical information packed into a single volume, but despite the "information density" of the text, I found it interesting and easy to read.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn about water and wastewater systems in a hurry, and to any long time professionals who need a single reference on the shelf to help with the math.

4-0 out of 5 stars calculation review

Product Description
Step-by-step procedures for planning, design, construction and operation: *Health and environment *Process improvements*Stormwater and combined sewer control and treatment*Effluent disposal and reuse*Biosolids disposal and reuse*On-site treatment and disposal of small flows*Wastewater treatment plants should be designed so that the effluent standards and reuse objectives, and biosolids regulations can be met with reasonable ease and cost. The design should incorporate flexibility for dealing with seasonal changes, as well as long-term changes in wastewater quality and future regulations. Good planning and design, therefore, must be based on five major steps:characterization of the raw wastewater quality and effluent, pre-design studies to develop alternative processes and selection of final process train, detailed design of the selected alternative, contraction, and operation and maintenance of the completed facility. Engineers, scientists, and financial analysts must utilize principles from a wide range of disciplines: engineering, chemistry, microbiology, geology, architecture, and economics to carry out the responsibilities of designing a wastewater treatment plant. The objective of this book is to present the technical and nontechnical issues that are most commonly addressed in the planning and design reports for wastewater treatment facilities prepared by practicing engineers. Topics discussed include facility planning, process description, process selection logic, mass balance calculations, design calculations, and concepts for equipment sizing. Theory, design, operation and maintenance, trouble shooting, equipment selection and specifications are integrated for each treatment process. Thus delineation of such information for use by students and practicing engineers is the main purpose of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory material
I found this text useful as a mnemonic, a memory tool. There are useful explanations of conventional tools for treating wastewater and water. You won't find many useful graphics but it is a book for the non-professionals. Personally, I find such textbooks useful because of the varied business of the design engineer. One year you're working steel mills next year chemical plants, a few years later refineries.

I know this review is brief but I hope it was useful. I recommend this book for what it is: a how-does-it-work text.

Product Description
The activated sludge process is the most versatile, commonly used wastewater treatment system in North America; however, many activated sludge processes frequently experience operational problems related to poor compaction or settleability of secondary solids and loss of secondary solids from the clarifier. Eschewing the technical jargon and copious chemical equations found in the majority of wastewater studies, Settleability Problems and Loss of Solids in the Activated Sludge Process speaks directly to plant operators, showing them how to identify and solve common problems and achieve maximum efficiency.

Michael H. Gerardi’s hands-on guide addresses the most common plant operational problems, such as increased costs, loss of treatment efficiency, and permit violations. Using numerous tables and illustrations, Settleability Problems provides microscopic and analytical techniques for troubleshooting and identifying the conditions responsible for settleability problems and loss of solids. It includes pictures of wet mounts and smears of acceptable and unacceptable microscopic conditions of the activated sludge and presents corrective measures for operational problems. Chapters include:

-Undesired Filamentous Growth
-Nutrient-Deficient Floc Particles
-Denitrification
-Slug Discharge of Soluble cBOD
-Viscous Bulking or Zoogloeal Growth
-Production and Accumulation of Foam and Scum

Volume II in the series, Settleability Problems will prove to be of unparalleled value to wastewater treatment plant operators as well as students of wastewater microbiology. ... Read more

This is a great book for troubleshooting settleability problems in activated sludge processes. It is easy to read and understand. It takes all of the best information from the most expensive references, such as MOP-11 by WEF and the "Wastewater Bible" as I call it from Metcalf & Eddy and translates it into material that a plant operator can read in one or two days and be able to make process changes immediately to help solve the problems they are experiencing.Even a most seasoned operator will find this book to be a great reveiw for thoses subtle details that we forget about when our plants are operating well and I highly recommend it for anyone just getting into the wastewater field or anyone interested in how the biological section of wastewater plants work. ... Product Description
Although initially based purely on environmental principles of reuse and recycling, natural waste treatment systems proved to have economic advantages over mechanical systems in many cases, being less expensive to build and operate as well as requiring less energy. Thus, natural waste treatment methods reemerged even as advanced wastewater treatment technologies exploded in growth. Reflecting this burgeoning popularity, Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems is the first book to integrate all the major types of natural treatment systems into a single source.

Beginning with an overview of the types of natural treatment systems, the book outlines the planning, feasibility assessment, and site selection processes unique to natural processes as well as the basic process responses and interactions governing natural systems. The authors then examine the systems in detail, discussing wastewater pond systems, free water surface constructed wetlands, subsurface and vertical flow constructed wetlands, land treatment, sludge management, and onsite wastewater systems. They illustrate the practical aspects through 30 examples; include 178 data tables for comparing costs, performance, and constraints; and describe new approaches to partially mixed ponds, including dual-powered aeration ponds.

Written by eminent experts in natural waste treatment, Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems is an invaluable tool for selecting, planning, and implementing ecologically and economically sound wastewater treatment systems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars passing the torch
I have been a consulting engineer for over 20 years now, and this book has a lot to offer. It sits on the top shelf of my bookcase when I need simple answers fast. The original edition of this book was essentially a summarization of design manuals published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the late 1970's and early 1980's.If you are old enough to have these original "purple manuals" on your shelf (and actually use them), then you probably don't need this book.

But the reality in the environmental engineering field is that most of the "old guard" who worked in the Construction Grants and Superfund program are at, or close, to retirement. If you are part of the new generation entering the field, this is a great book as it essentially encapsulates 4 of the old EPA manuals, plus you get the benefit of the extensive career experience of the authors.

This book did not get 5 stars in my review because most of the data analysis is from the late 1980's and early 1990's, and there are a lot empirical equations drawn from this old (and limited) data set. Most of the observations on "new" technology developments are in the literature review sections and the design equations have not necessarily been updated to reflect new research findings.Since 90% of the data on natural treatment systems has been published in the last 10 years, readers should be aware that assumptions behind old equation sets are limited and need to treated critically.

If you have an interest in natural wastewater treatment systems, this is a good starting point for the environmental engineer and a great overview manual for other practitioners in the field. If you want to specialize at a graduate-school level in a particular technology like constructed wetlands or pond systems, then you will have to dig deeper to find the cutting edge in more specialized books and the research journal literature. ...
