3-0 out of 5 stars Good organization, poor mathematics
This book is better organized than most other texts in this field. The selection of topics is generally good. Coverage of many topics is quite satisfactory. Ion exchange and membrane processes, however, are notexplained well.

While descriptive subjects (e.g.microbiology,diseases,etc) and those subjects that do not require advanced mathematicsare well explained, there are some serious blunders in the coverage of moremathematical topics.

For example, the author employs mathematicallanguage and notation in trying to "prove" or "derive"certain equations in Chapter 10 (pp. 255 to 261). The mathematics used, however, is sloppy and therefore the presentation is more confusing thanconvincing. The analysis covering Equations 10.37 to 10.40 shows that theauthor does not have an understanding of the substantial (material)derivative of fluid mechanics and transport phenomona.

There are someserious mistakes in the treatment of fixed bed adsorber systems(pp.490-498). For example, equations 15.51 and 15.65 are incorrect. Thereis also a mistake in Equation 15.57. There are other more fundamentalmistakes. The author seems confused here. I advise readers to consult Weberor Benefield et al. to study this subject.

Despite the above criticism, this book's treatment of many topics is more comprehensive and satisfactorythan that of many a textbook in this field. It is a valuable and wellcomeaddition to the textbook literature. In preparing the second edition, however, the author should have the chapter on mass balances and reactionkinetics completely rewritten (possibly by someone from the chemicalengineering faculty).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical book of reference and good basic theory
A very easy to consult reference book. In most cases in water andwastewater engineering, the book will help you to give you the rightdirection in solving an engineering problem. As a basic book very good inuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand without neglecting theory
Droste provides a very good overview with good description of the theoretical background. I find this book most helpful for more unusual problems in (water and) wastewater treatment. Very good value: covers almost everything you need to know in one book. ... Read more

Book Description
FROM THE PREFACE In the years since the first edition, I have continued to consider ways in which the texts could be improved. In this regard, I researched several topics including how people learn (learning styles, etc.), how the brain functions in storing and retrieving information, and the fundamentals of memory systems. Many of the changes incorporated in this second edition are a result of this research. The changes were field-tested during a three-year period in which I taught a water and wastewater mathematics course for Palomar Community College, San Marcos, California. · All the fundamental math concepts and skills needed for daily water/wastewater treatment plant operations. This first volume, "Basic Math Concepts for Water and Wastewater Plant Operators," provides a thorough review of the necessary mathematical concepts and skills encountered in the daily operations of a water and wastewater treatment plant. Each chapter begins with a skills check to allow the student to determine whether or not a review of the topic is needed. Practice problems illustrate the concepts presented in each section. ... Book Description
In a simple, straightforward manner, this book presents most of the major process units for wastewater treatment, addressing what the unit is and how it basically works. Along with that it provides some of the math problems associated with each unit. Each math problem, presented in English units, is usually followed by a nearly identical problem in metric units. It also presents new concepts, such as information on process microbiology, in a comfortable language so the reader can concentrate on the subject matter instead of the language used to present it. Simplified Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations provides comprehensive and technically accurate wastewater information in a clear and concise manner. The related workbook provides readers with a place to write in answers and work out problem solutions. ... Read more

Book Description
This book encourages and demonstrates an innovative approach to the design and operation of urban wastewater systems: integrated modelling and control. Consideration of sewer system, wastewater treatment plant and receiving water body as a single system (rather than as three moderately independent units as before) opens up new types of analyses and new control algorithms for urban wastewater systems.
After a comprehensive review of the literature of various fields including processes affecting water flow and quality in urban wastewater systems and their description by different types of models, this book also introduces some of the fundamental concepts of the operation of such systems. It discusses conventional as well as innovative control approaches - ranging from control by simple set-points to elaborate hierarchical control concepts taking into account the water flow and the quality of sewer systems, treatment plants and receiving water body. Thus it will enable the researcher as well as the practising engineer to analyse and to implement various types of control for a particular case study site. In order to illustrate the concepts developed, a detailed simulation study, covering the complete urban wastewater system, is presented. The conclusions drawn demonstrate that the application of innovative control concepts can lead to improved performance of wastewater systems.
In addition, a comprehensive survey of mathematical optimisation methods is presented. This book can assist the practising engineer and the student to gain knowledge of all aspects of wastewater systems. To the researcher, this book provides a thorough survey of existing simulation and control concepts and inspiration for further work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
I don't know what the other review is talking about. This book is very good in giving you basic information for someone working in a water or wastewater lab.I First looked at this book when I had a job working in a wastewater lab.I have to say that almost all of this book pertained to my job.

If anyone is going for a job interview for a laboratory technician, I would suggest looking this book over.It tells you how to figure out Molarity vs. Normality, accuracy vs. Precision, common glassware used, how its used, and why its used. These are common questions that come up during interviews.

I have a copy of this book at my desk for reference.

Another great reference book is the Pentone handbook (to bad they don't make it anymore).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent GIS book
Arguably, this is the best introductory GIS and water, wastewater, stormwater book around. The material is very readable and well organized, making the book an excellent foundation for additional detailed study. The selection and organization of topics, style of presentation, emphasis and writing are excellent. Examples to reinforce concepts are also provided. For example, GIS data and software examples are presented before their applications and GIS case studies are presented before the methods are explained.

This book provides a wealth of information and resources. In addition to the examples and practical case studies, the book also provides links to web sites that offer articles, tutorials and more samples, as well as organizations that have an interest in all aspects of the GIS and water resources and water distribution networks. The book also includes an introduction to Internet GIS, GeoSpatial database tools for water resources, integration of hydrologic and hydraulic models with GIS, and several other resources. For anyone who wants a solid introduction to these topics, these chapters are a must read.

This book provides exhaustive coverage of everything you need to know in order to master the GIS applications for water related fields. The book is designed for readers of all levels from experienced GIS users to those with little or no GIS experience. It does so by providing beginners with basic underlying GIS topics, while at the same time offering experienced GIS developers detailed and exhaustive coverage of the GIS tools for water, wastewater and stormwater systems.

By simply flipping through the pages of this book, it becomes evident that an enormous amount of time and effort went into it. It offers the same high quality and detailed coverage that you would find in most college level academic books. In fact, this book is written using the recommendations of the Accreditation of the American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) and ASCE's Excellence in Civil Engineering program.

The book is so diverse to cover many topics and yet all written comprehensively for each topics. You get real-world experience with the tools and case studies presented in this book, such that you might use in a job somewhere.

I recommend this book to any water professional or civil engineer that deals with everyday GIS. An excellent job of expository writing and worth every nickel you pay for it.
