Majestic and extraordinary, this is a truly original mix of art and nature
Rosalie Winard has created a body of work of incomparable beauty and the reproductions of her photography are mesmerizing. Growing up around San Francisco Bay and its many wetlands I have always been fascinated by egrets, herons and pelicans, but I could never have imagined them the way Rosalie sees these flying souls. I am truly amazed at what she has done here. This book ought to cost $100.00 with its French folded dust wraps, cloth binding and numerous gate folded images. I've met Ms. Winard and she is just as beautiful as her photography. She absolutely and resolutely adores her subject matter. If I could indicate 8 stars then I would. Wild Birds of the American Wetlands is a magnificent masterpiece and Rosalie's work belongs in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, period

Ethereal and spiritual is how I would describe these photographs. A very unique approach. The photographer's love of our feathered friends is evident in every photo. She describes how she came to love birds and observing them in her own words, as well. A real treat for birders and photographers.

I met Rosalie Winard and fell in love with her work prior to the publication of this book. I love that her work bridges science and art. She captures wetlands and the migratory journeys of birds through her photographs-provokes awe and concern for the well being of the creatures and their journeys. Her photographs also capture beauty, emotion, vastness, and joy in manner few artists ever achieve. I am so glad that Rosalie's book is on the shelves and fervently hope that this is the first of many books.

Our Children's Future
I gave this book to my daughter for her 21st birthday, hoping that she would appreciate these birds and their space on our earth. Her reaction far exceeded my expectations. "Mom I never expected to like a book about birds but I love this book" .She wanted a photograph ( the pelican landing) for her next birthday present. Each photograph is a special insight, a haiku of bird poetry.

I'm not a birder, but now I can understand why others are. The photos here are not the typical ones that always seem to be anatomy lessons. These capture the spirit of living in the wild along with the personality inherent in each individual avian. Highly recommended for those who love unique, fine art photography. Wet, wild and wonderful!
As an avid birder (bird watcher) I have a deep appreciation for, and attraction to, our wetland areas.I have visited great ones all over the country including the swamps of Southern Missouri, Florida's Everglades and New Mexico'sBosque del Apache NWR.And although many places like those still exist, by 1993 half the world's wetlands had been drained and that percentage is MUCH higher for the US.It is ironic to me that many of the wetlands that I can visit in order to view and photograph wild birds exist primarily due to the efforts and fees paid by hunters.Any effort to explain the importance of these unique ecosystems to the general public is much needed and appreciated.It is even more necessary to involve children as they are the ones who will inherit these precious natural resources."Here Is the Wetlands", another book in the Web of Life series does just that.

By introducing the habitat and inhabitants of a freshwater marsh one by one, Madeleine Dunphy not only tells of the diversity of life present but also their interdependence.The watercolor illustrations by Wayne McLoughlin are striking in their gorgeous simplicity and captivating use of rich, luxurious color.At the end of the book is a section that deals with the issue of our loss of wetlands and a plea for the reader to become involved in their protection.This is an excellent book for children of any age but especially for those in elementary school.

Beautifully captures life in the wetlands
The "Here is..." series of books featuring animals in their natural habitats by author Madeleine Dunphy are well-written and educational. Most are also beautifully illustrated with vibrant full-color pictures which enhance the cumulative verse style employed by the author.

In "Here is the Wetland", readers are introduced to the animals that inhabit the wetlands, specifically the freshwater marsh. Some of these animals include the muskrat, mink, bass, heron, frog, snake, blackbirds, coots, ducks, etc. The cumulative style employed here makes this book a perfect read-aloud for young children (ages 4-8), and may also motivate beginning/intermediate readers. My five-and-a-half-year old daughter enjoyed reading this book, and was entranced by the rich life in the wetlands, not to mention the detailed and vivid illustrations of wetland animals. Highly recommended for children ages 4-8.

But what beauty and natural utility was lost in the process? In Swampwalker's Journal, David M. Carroll transcends the political to find joy in the damp places he has loved since he was a boy. In chapters describing his favorite vernal pools, marshes, swamps, ponds, and bogs, Carroll describes hours spent watching animals frolic in their moist, vegetated homes. Good book about New England wetlands
I really liked this book. The book is a series of short stories, really, each focusing on one of the author's experiences in a different type of New England wetland. Together they make a great whole, but you could pick it up and enjoy reading the chapters in any order. The prose leans towards the poetic, so sometimes it was hard to pick it up and read, but once I did, I also had trouble putting it down! I liked the book so much it made me go out and look for frogs last week!

Walk A Wetland With This Guy
Well-written and an easy read.It made me want to do 2 things: Strap on my waders and head to the nearest wetland to see what I can find and order the other books in his "wet sneaker" trilogy.Enjoy.

Well-written piece of nature writing; a veritable feast!
The book is a pleasure to read although I did get bogged down a bit toward the end. It is obvious that this guy lived with his subject. Some of the identification descriptions of flora and fauna can become overwhelming to the reader not familiar with the northeastern environs. But, on the whole a well written book destined to become a classic in nature writing.

How Many Kinds of Wet Land
In addition to what everyone else has said (the poetry of the language, the gorgeous drawings, etc.), this book is especially useful in that it describes the relationships between all the different kinds of wetlands, and within riparian zones in general. It should be required reading for every developer and community activist intent on preserving some hydrologic function in natural areas. This is a wonderful, wonderful book.

A useful reference book!Great for biologists.
As a biologist somewhat new to the Southeastern US, this great reference book met several of my needs, related both to teaching and conducting research.It is great to be able to ID plants, both terrestrial and aquatic, and this book really helps out with the flora occurring in the coastal wetlands.Very nice!

Very useful manual for coastal wetland plants:

Should the author ever desire to revise or write another edition, I hope he doesn't change much, as it is good, but he might consider adding a few key upland plants which grow in extreme proximity to coastal wetland plants; these might be American Beach Grass (Ammophila brevigulata), Beachpeas (Lathyrus maritimus), Seaside Rose (Rosa), Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica), Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica), Sea Celery (Ligusticum scoticum), Common Sow Thistle or Beach Lettuce (Sondus oleraceae) - but these are easily learned on their own.

This is an excellent, very well written reference manual, useful to environmental consultants, wetland delineators, and botanists.Get a plastic book cover to protect it, and use it in the field (or salt-marsh, as the case may be).This may be the best text on this particular subject.-DMM ... Sweet!
This is a really great book. It explains way more then you would expect for a field guide. It goes in depth about each plant, animals that depend on them and other interesting tidbits that you wont find in any other guide.The awsome illustrations are done so beautifully and true to life no one should have any problems idtentifying plants on the trail. They also truly give this book a nice touch.It's like a book of old documenting new discoveries!

Great book!
This is a must have book if you live in areas with swamps/bogs.Its so accurate I'm just amazed.It is also very easy to use.It has drawings and it talks not only about id of the plants but also their "lifestyle" (e.g. how they reproduce, various ideosyncasies of the plants, insects that are associated etc.)Each plant also has a short section on lore which adds a nice bit of history.I really like the book

Just what I was looking for!
For those people who already kind of know their way around the forest, and are more interested in what they are going to see ASSOCIATED with the plants they see than what an Audobon book says, this is a naturalist's dream come true!

Great b/w illustrations of not only leaves and fruits, but insects, diseases, toothmarks, clawmarks and nests that can be found on and around the trees and plants listed in the book...

Also highly recommended is the Forest and Thicket book by the same authors...
