Excellent guide
I purchased this guide for my husband (a newly-minted whale naturalist with the American Cetacean Society) on the recommendation of one of their instructors. He is very pleased with it. On a practical level, it is water resistant and has beautiful pictures which can be easily shared with folks on the whale-watch boat.

Absolutely essential for anyone interested in sea mammals
For a long time I have been searching for guides to help identify whales and dolphins in different parts of the world, but until recently there was very little practically-oriented literature available. In the last few years, that has changed and several groundbreaking regional identification guides are now available: for example Whales and Dolphins of the European Atlantic (Ocean Guides) and Whales & Dolphins of the North American Pacific: Including Seals and Other Marine Mammals. So the non-specialist or casual observer is now in with a fighting chance of identifying those dolphins seen on a coastal hike or whales encountered on a ferry crossing.

At the same time, several references on global marine mammals have appeared, of which Shirihai and Jarrett's compact guide is the best of the bunch. Why? First of all, this guide is compact. At under 400 pages, it is small enough to fit into a coat pocket, yet there is enough information to enable the user to identify (potentially) any marine mammal. So this volume is a true field guide. The book covers sirenians (manatees and dugongs), seals, coastal otters and other marine mammals as well as the cetaceans. The text is concise and emphasises key identification features, but there is still room for notes on behaviour and ecology. There are plenty of plates, both photographic and illustrated - all of them of very high quality. It is clear that author and artist have ample field experience have been able, through this book, to put this squarely at the disposal of the user. Finally, the book is printed on high quality glossy paper, which makes it a pleasure to leaf through at home.

So next time I am off on a trip with a chance of encountering whales or dolphins, I will be packing this handy guide in a addition to whatever regional guides I can get my hands on. Meanwhile, I am enjoying some armchair whale-watching as I leaf through the pages back home.

THE best field gude on this subject; and one of the best of any natural history field guide
There have been a plethora of field guides on marine mammals and most of them, including several recent ones, such as Carwardine's and the Welles', that are quite good. Shirihai and Jarrett's is in a class by itself.However, it is not really intended as a spotting guide for geographic locations.It illustrates and explains the different variations with all the species, has excellent and distinctive photgraphs,wonderful art work of all species and many variants, fine maps, tells of behavioral and diet diffences for various populations of the same species (and hints where there may be new species, or subspecies, to be found).It is the most comprehensive such guide on this, or almost any other, wildlife family and is at a bargain price, even if Amzn.com hasn't yet discounted it.Don't miss this book! ... Enjoyable
I bought this for my son's sixth birthday after we had enjoyed another of this author's stories for a couple of years. We enjoy the illustrations and the writing is simple and insightful. We love that Davy has a dream and makes it come true by using his own ideas and creativity. He has quite an adventure with these orcas who spend a day enjoying their new friend and ultimately save him. A sweet, relaxing bedtime tale.

Davy's Dream
I purchased a beautiful greeting card in Sitka, AK with a boy in a boat floating among Orcas.I love telling my grandson stories based on pictures.I was so happy when I got home and turned the card over to find that there was already a book and this was just one of the illustrations.I ordered 2 books and love the beautiful story and even the pages that just have illustrations and no words needs. Lovely.
Well done and definately a classic.

"Davy" brings back my dreamlike days in the San Juan Islands
While this is an inspiring story to encourage kids to "follow their dreams," what attracts me back to this book are the illustrations.

As a native of Washington State, I spent my youth attending summer camp on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands, near the Canadian border. While at camp, we sometimes experienced "Killer Whale" sightings, which the counselors used to enjoy frightening us with.

We spent many lazy days on the beach, or boating to neighboring islands, where we would campout, hike, go clamming and crabbing on the beach or build rafts. Although we didn't spend any time in a sailboat at camp, I spent a good deal of time sailing with my older brother on Lake Washington during those carefree days of summer.

Paul Owen Lewis' paintings in "Davy's Dream," with the predominance of greens and blues, contrasted against the black and white of the orcas, vividly captures the essence of the San Juan Islands and the dreamlike state one can experience in this breathtaking environment. To his credit, Lewis lets his pictures tell Davy's dream for several pages, without the help of words.

I guess I just want to say that this book rings true to my experiences as a youth in the Pacific Northwest.

Whenever I read this book aloud to students in my elementary school library, they always listen with awe and then line up to check it out.

Encourages kids to believe in their dreams

Some things I didn't even know....
I like this book mainly because it went to extraordinary lengths to explain why a whale isn't a fish or the differences between a crocodile, an alligator a frog, and a toad.

The thing that surprised me the most is finding out the difference between a donkey and a mule. I never knew that mules couldn't reproduce. I did know that they were stubborn. I also didn't know that there was such a thing as the butterfly moth.

Pigment of Imagination
This is a beautiful, well told book full of color woodcut illustrations inspired by Northwest Native American totem poles The pictures are wonderful: bursting with action and atmosphere.The story, based on a legend of the Northwest Indians (it would have been nice to name them), is about diverse animals working together to save salmon from a river-going whale!Thunderbird's talons take the whale up to a mountaintop and the two creatures strike a deal to make the river safer for Frog andabundant with fish for people.

In addition to the unique wood prints, Siberell's book is noteworthy for the last page's description of tools and natural color sources (e.g., cedar, animal blood, berries, clamshells) used to make totem poles.29 pages, suitable for reading to toddlers up through first grade or so, as well as a good reading book for the somewhat older child (around second or third grade).

A well presented tale of how whale came to live in the sea.
Whale In The Sky, written and illustrated by Anne Siberell, is a clear and strong story about how whale came to live in the ocean and not in thestream. The text is concise and spare, which keep the story from beingbogged down. The relaxed style of the writing is also reflected in thegraphics. The illustrations are done with woodcuts. Eye Opening experience
The book Gift of the Whale is an eye opening view into the life of the Inupiat and the importance of the whale hunt to their life and traditions.The photos are awesome, and realistically show people involved in the struggle to survive in the harsh environment of northern Alaska. The narrative is interesting and informative.

A Frank and Beautiful View of Inupiat Subsistence Lifestyle
Bill Hess as created a masterpiece. His grainy and moody black and white capture the bowhead hunt, Point Lay beluga hunts and Inupiat life in respectfully frank perfection.The book contains several stories that are threaded in and out of the Inupiat Bowhead hunts and gives a good look into the subsistence lifestyle of the Eskimos who live on the edge of the Arctic ocean.

Hess' journalistic writing style is easy to read and appreciate.He was able to get a close-up view on many things most will never have a chance to see from subsistence hunts, search and rescue missions and the 1990's attempt to free three ice-trapped gray whales which had captured the medias attention.It was interesting how different the story that reached us was compared to the situation and conclusion was on the ice.

If you have interest in whale hunting or Eskimo lifestyles, get this book.It is a great visual and prose look into this arctic world.

Insightful & honest
Bill Hess is a very gifted photographer, who works almost exclusively in black and white.He has spent a great deal of time with the people the people of the North Slope whose lives are shared in this book.For a number of years he was under contract to the North Slope Borough to produce a magazine about life on the North Slope (Uinniq-The Open Lead, which makes it clear that the people of the North Slope felt that he represents them clearly and fairly.

One could enjoy this book for the photography alone, but it is so much more than that.Whaling is a central focus of North Slope Inupiat culture; it is an inextricable part.People here know that; and the whalers carry it out as a sacred trust on behalf of the whole community.

Stunning
This is a stunning visual presentation combined with a moving, unpretentious text.The drama of the three grey whales, the search for footprints . . . it is all powerful stuff.I have only been living inBarrow for nine months but so far there isn't a word that doesn't ringtrue.

Hilarious and delightful reading...
A fascinating story, Perry Miller's The Raven and the Whale is probably one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time... despite being completely true and a work of history.

The title might oversell the book as being about Melville and Poe. They are in here as important supporting characters (along with Longfellow, Hawthorne and even Walt Whitman), but the focus of the book is really the rivalry between two ideas of American literature and the supporters on each side. Miller spins out a story of political maneuvering, personal enmity and thwarted ambition against a period of 40 years of history, showing how American literature was sidetracked by personal vendettas, grandiose ambitions and the comparative cheapness and availability of pirated British literature.

Miller is able to muster empathy for a novel's worth of eccentric characters, and can appreciate the efforts of even the most pretentious blowhards in the period's literary circle. He has an excellent prose style, dry and reserved and capable of pointing out irony without laying it on too thick.

Because, in the end, the irony is that most of the furor of these arguments were forgotten, and the two men whose names appear in the title, men who their compatriots undervalued and disregarded, are the only ones that ring a bell with people today. ... Read more

This book was about Andrew and Judy and Thudd in a whale. They got swallowed in a whale, they went through its three stomachs and got pooped out.They learned that a blue whale's intestines are 500 feet long and a person's intestines are only 13 feet long.I liked this book because I leaned stuff.I would recommend this book

Another fast Adventure
Wow! I did'nt think Andrew's and Judy's adventures could get muct better than 1-5 of the Andrew's books. But, here it is: Andrew lost in the Whale is my favorite!When Andrew shows Judy The Water Bug...it was no big deal. That changes really fast when he accidently pushes the Search for the Giant Sqiud button.It is at this point that Andrew, Judy, and Thud begin
an adventure that takes them to helping Whales and riding out terrible storms in the ocean near Hawaii.I loved this book and found every chapter holding my attention and keeping me on the edge of my seat.

AGE GROUP
I got this book for my daughter who is 5-1/2 years because it said it was for age 4-8.I would say this book is actually for 8 and above.In average, there are over 200 words in a page and each chapter has approx 9-10 pages.Someone should correct this false info so that it will be listed for the correct age group readers.

Very informative....
This books explains in detail the many different kind of whales and my daughter found it very informative. There were some math problems included as you read through the chapters. Not a light read, but very good.

Another great book
Even my 10 yr old loves this one.He loves whales and finds anything with more info fun to read.These chapter books provide a great way for kids to learn and enjoy reading at the same time.

A Wild book on Wild Whales
This review is by my 10 year old son. This book has moreinformation on Whales than other books I have read. First they go on abus tour. Then they turn the bus into a sub. Ms. Frizzle, Has four mini-subs. Two kids went in each sub. Ms. Frizzle, stayed in the bus with the Captain Gil. Then the adventure begins. I enjoyed this book very much.

Bleed this turnip dry.
Nathaniel Philbrick wrote an exceptional book titled, "In the Heart of the Sea - The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex". Is is full of vivid accounts of the plight of the whaleship Essex - from its departure from the wharves of Nantucket to its eventual ramming and sinking by an irate sperm whale in the middle of the Pacific to the rescue of a few lucky souls 94 days later. It won a National Book Award for the author and deservedly so.

Now we are to read "Revenge of the Whale" by the same author. Well, this is only a poorly abridged version of "In the Heart of the Sea". It has all the facts with none of the details and side stories of the original. Why this book exists is beyond me. I know! Lets delete a few pages - Phil can decide what to take out - and re-release this baby under a new title and make some more money!

Advice - take a little more time and purchase the original - forget that you ever saw this title.

Revenge of the Whale
Revenge of the Whale is about a whaleship journey, with the ship Essex. Captain George Pollard faces many mysterious, and fatal incidents with two different kinds of whales, and many different kinds of weather. This whaleship sailed out of Nantuckett, MA to find only one resource...oil. But they've come across more than just oil, but tragedy along with it.

My personal favorite part of the book is when the crew first sees land in months. I liked this part of the book becuase, it gave me a great essence of releif. I also liked this part of the book becuase, it showed that God gave the crew mercy, something they've always needed. The last reason I liked this book is becuase, I was thinking about what the job description to be a whaler if they told the applicant everything, " You may find yourself eating your best friend, starving to death, dieing of thirst, and drinking the blood of turtles.
I reccommend this book to only a mature audience becuase, little kids would certainly not appreciate this incredible historical story. There is also some confusing and misleading parts of this book that young people wouldnt care for or understand. This story may also bring fear to a small child of the ocean or whales. Once again, mature audiences only!

Revenge of the whales
In Revenge of the whales the whales ship Essex leaves port from Nantucket. The ship is hunting sperm whale for its oil. The whale ship does not spot a whale for some time when it does finally kill one the oil is collected. They continue around Cape Horn into the pacific where they a lot more sperm whales. One day while out at sea a whale is spotted near the side of the sperm whale rams the side and breaks the hull.The Essex turns over and is capsized. The men are now in the small whale boats which are row boats they adapted to be able to sail. The hang near the capsized salvaging parts. One day the oil starts to leak and come on board there ships the oil is very smelly and silk. So they set out for South America. They stay as a group. When they start to run out of food and the men start dieing the black men are eaten first. Then the off lenders are eaten and finally they must eat each other. The men reach a deserted island where the find fresh water and find tropical birds. They drink the blood to make the thirst go away. After stocking up three men stay because they can not stand to sail. The three ships become separated Chase's the first mate; Pollard the captain and, the off landlers in a storm. Chase is left with two men in his boat. Pollard must execute his own Cousin for food. This book was very good I would recommend to any one. ... Read more

good photos; good info; great package
A few months ago National Geographic had an article on orcas that basically persuaded me that this was an animal I wanted to learn a lot more about. I shopped around on Amazon, and decided that this would be the best book for starters. Now that I've read it, I think I was probably right: and if your situation is similar, I recommend it.

Now the text is not for kids. I shared it with a young orca enthusiast, and we couldn't even get through the picture captions. But for adults without degrees in biology, this is probably the most informative and descriptive text available. For a good sample, look at the description of seal hunting technique on pages 73 and 75.

(Another one to check out is "Cetacean Societies." The text is a step heavier, the subject broader; yet it just might be what the curious scientifically-literate adult ordered. This book may actually be a bit simple if you've read many science books. For instance, check out the history of evolution on p. 22. Compare that to another pop-sci book, Carl Zimmer's "Fish with Fingers.")

The pictures are great for everyone. I was a little wary after reading about the "haunting" photo on the cover, which I judge as actually very ordinary. But inside the book it gets better.

On page 25, there's a great view of the mouth and teeth of an orca, as close as you'd probably ever like to get; on 59, a picture of a birth taking place; on 60, a picture of a mother petting her calf; on 87, a picture of a calf nursing; on 92, a picture of a whale playing with kelp. Those are great shots, IMO; illustrating the life of an orca, rather than merely arial acrobatics (pictures of which are included plentifully).

Some people will care a lot about the quality of the photos, which are varied: the surface photos are uniformly excellent, but underwater, I guess you take what you can get, especially in the wild.

(David Suzuki's foreward argues against having orcas captive in small pools; that evidently upset a previous reviewer. Well, it's just an opinion, and a reasonable one at least.)
