2-0 out of 5 stars Not Thrilled
I'm sorry I know this book has gotten good reviews and I honestly think the author is a good writer, I just couldn't get into the story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!
A suprise series. The storyline is deep and involving. Set up for a series, but with a strong ending to the book anyways. The writing is great, the author does a good job of the first-person perspective and creates a rich world and rich characters with rich emotions. Anyone looking for a new series to entertain them will not be disappointed with this first book of the Zodiac series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much plot!!!
I can't say this book is horrible, because I do feel compelled to keep reading it, but the plot seems unnecessarily complicated and the book is overwritten. The whole premise seems really unbelievable, even for a sci-fi book. *laugh* People just seem to do things in certain situations that don't seem realistic. If the fate of the world was really in the hands of these people, I don't think it would be going this well.

The book also seems to put a lot of energy into building up situations or people who appear to be important, and then they just become not important. Like the rather large (and somewhat outlandish) set up of the heroine's secret identity but by mid-book it doesn't seem to matter anymore, and personally I can't see why all the bad guys (and the good guys for that matter) don't know who she is, because its the most obvious secret identity choice of all time.

I think the heroine herself is interesting and her conflict is compelling, and if the author had just left her paired down, and not over complicated her, this could be a really fresh, intense story, but there is just too much plot here, and it gets in the way of the dark emotional story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good beginning to the series.
Vicki Pettersson, The Scent of Shadows (Harper Collins, 2007)

Vicki Petterson kicks off her new series, The Signs of the Zodiac, with this paranormal thriller about corruption and conscience in Los Angeles. Joanna Archer is the black sheep of the Archer family, whose scion Xavier is one of Vegas' premier gaming magnates. She spends her nights taking pictures of Vegas' disaffected, both drawing attention to their plight and hiding behind the shield that is the camera lens. After a blind date tries to kill her, and she reconnects with the cop who was her boyfriend before she shut the world out after a horrific incident when she was sixteen, things suddenly start getting weird with the arrival of a bum who has preternatural healing powers...

Confusing synopsis? Not surprising; there's a lot going on here (and what I covered in the paragraph above is roughly twenty pages of this four-hundred-fifty-five page novel). It takes a bit to get going, as many first-novels-in-series do; there's some setup to be done, but Pettersson handles it the way she handles most everything else, fast and furious. Still, despite my synopsis, everything's easy to follow here; you don't need a cast roster or anything like that. The writing is pretty standard paranormal-action genre writing, but you get what you pay for here-- a slick, fast-paced thriller that's a great deal of fun, has a number of interesting (and, in some cases, quite well-developed) characters, and in which the pages keep turning almost of their own accord. I'll be interested to see how the series progresses as we go on. *** ½

4-0 out of 5 stars wow
I have never felt compelled to review a book until now. All I can say is WOW. I picked this up for a light read and wound up so caught up in the adventures of the characters I couldn't put it down. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth (At least for Aries Women)
Next to the Bible, I think this is one of the most important books people need to own.I definitely use it as a point of reference and I'm not even heavy into astrology. But I was called out so accurately, I had no choice but to believe. It's almost alarming how you can be described so well by something that has no pulse.I'm not saying that it'll be the same experience for everyone, but it's definitely not a waste of money--especially if you're single! *wink*

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I've had this book for years, and I'm sorry that it took me so long to review.

But this book breaks things down for the sistahs and the brothas. I am glad that she took it upon herself to write a book such as this, because it was needed. I keep this book beside Linda Goodman's books. I am sorry, Goodman is a force to be reckoned with!

I think Balfour does an excellent job when describing the signs. She hit the Pisces woman to a Tee for me...I don't want a man who won't work...oh no...I don't play that disability mess either...How are we gonna survive on that? LOL

2-0 out of 5 stars interesting
When I checked my sun sign; Virgo. I was stunned that I actually act like that, some of the facts were wrong...but not every virgo are the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL
This is one of the books that changed my life, yes its a little hard to read at times but WOW - the power in it - it is life changing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another version...
... for a 1st book on the subject, I would recommend this version. The author includes chapters on: "planets & character traits", "Rectification using Symbols", & info on using them for daily guidance (by using the Symbol for the sunrise degree). They can be used w/ Horary charts as well. If you've no book on the Sabian Symbols, definitely try this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astrology and Oracle in one book!
Astrology is an area of spirituality that has been distorted by popular use. However, this book opens new possibilities for astrology both as a traditional predictive tool, and as a means of personality integration. The book has 1000 horoscope examples of real people, and some well-considered theory mundane and Horary Astrology, of which the last of these is original. Most importantly, this book presents the Sabian Symbols. To my knowledge this was the first publication of the symbols, yet many books have published them since.

What are the Sabian Symbols? Well, each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac is assigned a "symbol", such as for example "Taurus 22 - White dove over troubled waters".Then, this symbol is given a positive and a negative slant in a paragraph of text, as well as a keyword, in this case Taurus 22 degrees is "Guidance".The symbols add value to any horoscope, but there's more!

The symbols in this book are excellent and practical as a kind of modern day "I Ching".That is, you can ask a question (of your higher self), then select a symbol using a random selection to find out your answer.A good way to do this is for example, to have two stacks of normal playing cards. For the stack to select the zodiac sign use:- Aries - King of Hearts; Taurus - Queen of Hearts; Gemini - Jack of Hearts; Cancer - King of Diamonds; Leo - Queen of Diamonds; Virgo - Jack of Diamonds; Libra - King of Spades; Scorpio - Queen of Spades; Sagittarius - Jack of Spades; Capricorn - King of Clubs; Aquarius - Queen of Clubs; Pisces - Jack of Clubs.

Then, for the selection of the degree of that sign, use: hearts 1-10 for 1 to 10 degrees, diamonds 1-10 for 11 to 20 degrees, hearts 1-10 for 21 to 30 degrees.

So, for example, Taurus 22 degrees using this system would be denoted by "Queen of hearts" = Taurus, "2 of clubs" = 22 degrees.

I have used this book "off and on" over the past ten years together with the similar book by Dane Rudhyar. The latter I found had similar and complementary text descriptions for the symbols. In my opinion, the symbols have even more far-reaching possibilities. They can be used as a device to learn "clair-seeing" where the world we walk in can be interpreted prophetically by reading into the symbolisms noticed. This is a fascinating prospect but I've not seen any book working that way from the Sabian Symbols. The author Marc Edmund Jones spent 30 years on this one; a worthwhile endeavour as you can see from what I've said here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Useful Astrological Symbols
This book could be the 'missing link' for those working with astrology. The symbols and their written interpretations can be used with stunning results in both natal and forecasting work. Which set of symbols? I find I have to use both, one dominating at certain times, the other at other times. Warning: make sure you realize that 0 Libra in your printed chart is Libra 1 in these symbolic readings, and so on; 11 Sagittarius in a chart is Sagittarius 12 when you look for the symbol. It is truly amazing that these seers from the 19th century were able to perceive, or create, symbols which are persistently accurate and effective in the 21st. You will explore and find for yourself how to use them, if you get in the spirit of astrological discovery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arcane Knowledge
I got the book out of curiosity.I was somewhat familiar with Sabian Symbols but had not heard of similar work by "Charubel" and "Sepharial", until an acquaintance mentioned Charubel.I googled around and found this book -- with a bonus!two unrelated Symbol Sets in one book!

So far I haven't found "sufficient evidence of value in these symbolisations" (quote from page ix in the Preface), but it's interesting reading.Partly because the text is over 100 years old; it's a blast from the past.Would I recommend to someone else?My answer quotes the last sentence on page 47: "At all events there can be no harm in adding this new (sic) series to the literature of the subject, and in the belief that it may be of some service in the cause of truth, I commend it to the notice of my fellow-students."

4-0 out of 5 stars recommended only to those who are interested in esoteric astrology
i liked the idea, very lyric, but not very practical

5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated sets of degree symbols
I bought a very small hardcover book containing the degrees of the zodiac symbolized by Charubel and Sepharial decades ago, back in about 1970.I was very impressed with the symbols, particularly with Sepharial's.

Recently I have been comparing the symbols of Charubel and Sepharial with the Sabian symbols of Elsie Wheeler. It's a very interesting study.I may write a book about it.

The Sabian symbols are the most famous degree symbols, but my introduction to this subject was the book you are thinking of buying right now, the Charubel and Sepharial symbols.Of the three sets, I'd have to say that the Sepharial symbols are the clearest. You don't miss what he's driving at.It isn't too vague, as Charubel sometimes is, and as Wheeler occasionally is.Sepharial puts the meaning of the degree right out there where you can't miss it, and usually has a human protagonist in his symbols to make it even clearer, as opposed to some sort of geometric shape or other.

Sepharial claimed to have gotten his symbols from a publication called La Volasfera, but I understand that nobody has ever seen La Volasfera, and at least one writer suspects that Sepharial made them up himself. What is La Volasfera anyway?

Astrology is such a complicated subject, with so many planets to keep track of, their positions in signs and houses, their aspects to each other, and also their decans and degrees.Complicated as it is, I think the study of individual degrees of the zodiac is worth adding to the list, because the readings are interesting and accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Grimoire
This little book of degree symbols is remarkable for its accuracy and uneven-ness.Instead of providing a simple, bland, and consistently positive interpretation of each image, this book runs the gamut from the grim and harsh to the exalted and subtle.I have used it in my astrological practice for 40 years, and have often been astonished at the precision of its interpretations. Some people believe that because of its age, the careful practitioner should adjust for the precession of the equinoxes before applying the symbols to the degrees of a modern horoscope. However, I have found that rounding up to the next whole degree works just fine.If you have access to the "Long Form" of the Marc Edmund Jones/Elsie Wheeler degree symbols, they often suggest an antidote for the darker tones of this text; conversely this work reveals those tones where the Jones' Sabian Symbols glosses them over. ... Good for beginner and advanced student alike. A beautiful bridge between "traditional western astrology"(tropical) and "spiritual or esoteric astrology" which is often seen as primarily sidereal.
Easy to read and even engaging in parts...rare for an astrology tome.
Of interest is the relationship advanced between the decanates of each sign and the physical appearance of the native. David Anrias is also an artist and in addition to verbal descriptions, he illustrates the primary physical characteristics of each sign's three decanates.
Should be reprinted. The wisdom is ageless. ... Read more

Amazon.com
Twenty-two-year-old Eddie Seda lived with his mother and sister in an apartment in Brooklyn. He had no job, no wife, no girlfriend, no friends. He was desperate to become somebody important. The person he chose to "be" was the infamous Zodiac killer who haunted San Francisco during the late 1960s. Between 1990 and 1995 Seda shot nine people in a pattern according to their zodiac signs, sent cryptic messages to the New York Post in a style imitating the original Zodiac, and then finally, in 1996, staged a fierce firefight with the police after barricading himself in the apartment. Kieran Crowley, who covered this "New York Zodiac" as a reporter for the Post, has a lively, dramatic style that is well-suited to his fictionalized accounts of Seda's inner thoughts and private rituals. At times, though, Crowley's prose is overly excited, even sloppy--such as referring to a DNA fingerprint as a "map" of the "genetic code." Book Description
The twisted copycat who looked to the stars.... He slipped like a sinister shadow in the night, stalking, then savagely attacking. Most of his unsuspecting targets were shot at close range and one woman was stabbed over one hundred times. After dispatching his victims, police allege he left their bloodstained bodies and crept back to the neatly kept room in his mother's apartment.Sleep my little dead....The taunting, bizarre letters alleged killer Heriberto Seda sent to the police and the New York Post were full of strange symbols and mysterious references to the Zodiac. For six terror-filled years, the Zodiac killer ruled the night, claiming nine victims in his homicidal rage. One of the biggest manhunts in New York City's history was unleashed....and still the body count rose. When would the terror end?Police claim his lethal fury finally exploded one summer afternoon. After shooting his own sister, he held her boyfriend hostage and kept scores of heavily armed police pinned down in a ferocious firefight that finally ended with his surrender. But it was only when an alert detective recognized a symbol drawn on Seda's confession as similar to the personal signature used by the Zodiac Killer in his letters, that investigators concluded that the madman they had arrested was in fact the notorious Zodiac Killer.Author Kieran Crowley, an award-winning New York Post reporter who covered the case from the first grisly shooting and cracked the psychopath's secret code, reveals the exclusive inside story and finally solves the biggest remaining mystery of the case. ... I've read material safety data sheets more engaging than this. Stick with Graysmith or others if you want a good read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Zero Stars for this book!
Save your time, save your money, don't purchase this book.

Yes, in NYC this guy was called the Zodiac, but this author uses California's infamous Zodiac Killer symbol, etc. on the cover. So much for imagination.

The book itself is a total waste of time, the writing is poor, there are spelling and grammatical mistakes throughout. If I could have given this book a zero star rating I would have.

If you want good true Crime check out books by Graysmith, Keppel, Rule, Bledsoe and Carlton Smith, these names are KNOWN in the True Crime genre, Crowley is not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Guide; Great Value; Nicely done
I bought this beautifully illustrated and chunky book because of the WIDE variety of information it contains. It contains definitions and goes beyond to give you an overall basic understanding of Astrology and the different aspects of it. If you are looking for a complete guide, that goes into deep detail about all of the aspects pertaining, then this is not the book you're looking for. For me, this is a great reference guide to astrology.

Here's some of what I like about this book:
I like the amount of information given for each sign. For example, you get a profileaccording to: Appearance, Personality, Mind, Emotions, Strengths, Weaknesses, Shadow, Karma, Likes/Dislikes, Money, As a parent/As a child, Career, Leisure, and Gift ideas. (There is a small paragraph for each subject.)

I don't follow astrology as closely now as I did when I first became interested, so this book is extremely helpful for me if I know there's a certain aspect going on, and I need to look it up quickly to get a general idea of what's going on. (like...Oh! okay, now I remember what that's about!)

Other subjects covered are:
Elements
Qualities and Polarities
The Planets
The Houses and Angles (& aspect patterns)
The Aspects
The Unfolding Chart
How to interpret a chart
Compatability Chart (what type of lover each sign is)

I think this is a great guide for anyone interested in astrology. If there is a certain area you want more information on, then there are plenty of books you can find that will explain the specifics in much more detail. To get a general overview of how it all works, this is a great book for that. It's nicely organized.

With 3 kids and a full-time job to work around, every minute saved counts! The "Bible" series has been a wonderful addition to my personal pagan library.I have other books that are more in depth that I could never live without ("The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need" for example) but the quick-find layout of these books has proven to be invaluable as well.

This is a very informative book i'm not particualy knowledgable on the subject and am not sure if there are other books that may be more informative. This is definetly a good choice for those who are just interested and maybe just curious on how to understand other people and yourself better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that definitive
Well, I couldn't resist buying this bookfrom my local bookstore, because of its elegant size, and wonderful illustrations. It is a book of 400 pages packed in an almost pocket-sized volume, of high-quality paper and beautiful and colorful illustrations. The content of the book is well organized and each section is separated by different page colors, which is helpful when you are searching for specific information.

However, after reading this book, I really had the feeling that it is rather superficial and leaves you with more questions. It tries to cover a lot of ground, i.e.:

a. an introduction to astrology, its history, and its
division in different categories
b. zodiac signs
c. elements
d. qualities and dignities
e. planets, retrogrades, nodes
f. houses and angles
g. aspects
h. interpretation technique of the natal chart
i. transits, progressions, solar and lunar returns
j. synastry and composite charts
k. astrology and health
l. eclipses

But 400 pages is just not enough to adequately explain all these issues. It is impossible to learn about synastry and casting composite charts in only 6 pages, or about the moon's nodes in one paragraph.

So, if you really want to learn about those things in depth, this book will not give you that, but if you are a beginner and just want to have a general idea about the whole thing, then you would probably find this a pleasant read.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book
so insightful and easy to read. contains so many different things about each sign really is a awesome book! you'll know everything about your sign! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal Healing According To Your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant
"You may already know your birthstone, but you may be surprised to learn that there are several other stones associated with your birthchart." --from the book

Your natal astrological chart is based on the date, time, and place of your birth. Most people are familiar with their Sun sign, which is one of 12 Zodiac symbols. The placement of the Sun in your chart indicates the pathway your soul is following, and each sign is associated with one or more crystals. Using the gemstones associated with your Sun sign can help attract beneficial energies, balance out less desirable tendencies, overcome your karmic inheritance and connect you to the path of your soul.

Each Sun sign is also associated with specific body parts, indicating areas where health challenges may occur. Birthstones can help with these ailments, as well.

While the Sun sign is important, there are two other components of your natal chart that paint the unique portrait that is you: the Moon sign and Ascendant (also know as the Rising Sign). The Moon sign shows how you process and express emotion. Your instinctual nature, unconscious patterns and expectations are also governed by your Moon Sign.

The Ascendant, or Rising Sign, is the "mask" you show to the world. It's the part of your personality that is readily seen to most-a "first impression" if you will. Interestingly, this face you present to the world may be far different than the inner workings of your Sun sign!

The Crystal Zodiac by Judy Hall is an incredibly practical book that explains which gemstones and crystals correlate with each Sun, Moon, and Ascendant placement...and why. So if your Sun is in Scorpio, your Moon is in Aquarius and your Ascendant is in Aries, you'll get a comprehensive overview of the crystals that will aid you on your own unique journey.

For each of the 12 Sun Signs, Hall provides an in-depth look at the corresponding birthstone, abundance stone, ritual crystal, and companion crystals. She then takes you on a journey exploring each Sun sign and how specific crystals help you reach your highest potential, deal with challenges, handle emotions, balance your thinking, link you to your soul's pathway, and heal physical ailments. Hall even provides a special birthday ritual for each Sun sign.

The Crystal Masks section explains the Ascendant and what it reflects in a natal chart. Hall asserts that the Ascendant crystal for each sign is a powerful tool for self-development, bestowing confidence and helping you "own" the qualities of your Ascendant. For the 12 Ascendant placements, Hall explains how each one "meets" the world, the nature of its "mask", and crystal "confidence tricks". She also provides the "fairy godmother" blessings innate in each Ascendant Sign, as well as a wonderful meditation.

For the Moon Sign, Hall outlines the Moon crystal, intuition crystal, and lunar crystals for each of the 12 placements. She explains the significance of your Moon crystal, and the positive qualities of each Moon sign. Because the Moon is associated with emotions, ingrained behavior patterns, and intuition, you'll find out what crystals help with exploring hidden needs, overcoming emotional blocks, developing intuition, and nurturing yourself. Two intriguing aspects to the Moon Sign section is the past life association and a specific ritual. For example, the ritual for the Aries Moon involves a Co-Operation Ritual, Scorpio Moon a Forgiveness Ritual and Cancer Moon a Tie-Cutting Ritual.

Because we each possess a bit of all 12 Signs, Hall provides a full-color Crystal Zodiac Mandala for meditation and contemplation.

The Crystal Zodiac consists of 144 glossy pages featuring dozens of full-color pictures of gemstones and crystals. Although gemstones may often be prettier and pricier, Hall provides the less-expensive correlations for each-assuring the reader that they exhibit the exact same qualities as their counterparts.

Hall writes in an enjoyably lucid style, so this potentially complex subject has been rendered quite graspable for individuals new to crystal healing and astrology. Those familiar with Sun, Moon, and Ascendant signs will be sure to gain additional insights into personality patterns and past life ripples. Crystal healers will love the added dimension that the Zodiac brings to balancing mind, healing the emotions, grounding the body, and expanding the spirit.

3-0 out of 5 stars powerful female character... messy execution
Zodiac Girls: From Geek to Goddess by Cathy Hopkins is a re-telling of one of the oldest stories around. Girl goes to new school where she doesn't know anyone, gets picked on by the school bully and fails to make the team, or in this case, the school play. Eventually, through misadventures and valuable life lessons, she comes to love herself, make friends and stick it to the aforementioned bully. What makes this re-telling different from all the others? Astrology. The heroine of From Geek to Goddess, Gemma, is chosen to be a Zodiac Girl. This means that for one month the planets, stars and a few Greek gods will help her on her journey from loner loser to queen bee.

Great premise, but the execution of the actual story was lacking. Hopkins tries to shove too many events into too few pages. Instead of just a couple of main events, we get several small, quick adventures that don't really connect, giving the book a disjointed feeling. Also, for a book that's supposed to involve magic and mythology, there's not that much in the way of the supernatural that happens. It's hinted at that several characters are Greek gods, but we never get to see them do anything superhuman. Most of the otherworldly help Gemma receives is via a magic cell phone and website, and even then, she is mostly just given vague, daily horoscopes that she could have read in the newspaper.

Still, the book does have its merits, the biggest of which being the character of Gemma herself. Outgoing, impulsive and fairly confident, Gemma does not mope when things go wrong, but instead looks for new and different ways to makes friends and improve her social life. She is positive and self-reliant, neither a goody-goody nor a brat. A good role model for any young girl.

Though not destined to become a classic, From Geek to Goddess would probably be an entertaining read for a child interested in Greek mythology or astrology. Even if they are not impressed with the story, the astrology wheel and Gemini Fun Facts page at the back of the book should be enough to make it worth their while. ... Read more
