"I was Himmler's Astrologer"
Wilhelm Wulff's memoir of World War II is a terrific book. Wulff wrote the book in order to counter the accusation that he had strong Nazi credentials and was the official astrologer of the Third Reich.Wulff wrote his book in 1968 (titled Tierkreis und Hakenkreutz in German) and it was translated into English in 1973.According to Wulff, despite the rumors, the Nazis did not really have a high regard for astrology except as a propaganda tool.(The British too exploited astrology for its propaganda value by publishing phony astrological forecasts to boost British morale and manufacturing false astrological magazines in German with dire predictions for the Third Reich and smuggling them into Germany in an effort to undermine German morale.)Wulff, like Hitler, began his career as an artist.But early on Wulff became interested in astrology and decided that this was his true metier and became an astrologer instead. He was a top astrologer in Germany when Hitler came to power.The Third Reich basically prohibited astrology and some astrologers thrown into concentration camps.Hitler's second in command, Heinrich Himmler, however, had a strong interest in the occult and read through Wulff's occult library after the Nazis confiscated it.He then summoned Wulff and questioned him about it.As a result, Wulff involuntarily became Himmler's astrologer, casting and interpreting horoscopes for top Nazis and mundane events.He was really a prisoner, he states, and was kept working around the clock to answer questions and make predictions for the Nazis.According to Wulff, the major question was "When will Hitler die?" and "Will he be assassinated."Wulff counseled Himmler to stage a coup by arresting Hitler and ending the war.Unfortunately, Himmler was intrigued by Wulff's advice, but procrastinated until it was far too late.Himmler listened to Wulff, but heard only what he wanted to hear.Wulff was amazed at Himmler's naivete.As the war worsened for the Germans, Himmler had a nervous breakdown.The portrait of Himmler at the end when he is desperately trying to make his stars seem positive is chilling."Then it's all over?It's the end?What am I supposed to do?!"

Whether or not Wulff tells the whole truth no one knows, but truthful or not, the story is quite gripping.This book offers some explanation for the Germans' so quickly embracing National Socialism.In Ian Kershaw's biography of Hitler, he states that people voluntarily "Nazified" their professions.According to Wulff, fear was the motivation, not zeal for Nazism.When Hitler took power, astrologers formed "a National Socialist Astrological Society" in an effort to curry favor with the Nazis.It did not work.Astrology was still banned.

This was probably a difficult book to translate into English because of all the astrological terms employed.There are places where the English is clumsy.But overall, the book is quite well written.I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in World War II and/or astrology.Knowledge of astrology is not necessary to appreciate this book.Recommended.4 Stars. ... Encompasses all the Heavens
This edition demonstrates what the ancient star systems were like before Ptolemy elminated them as too confusing.If you ever wondered if there was more to the sky than the typical astrology charts indicated then this is a set you would like to have. Interesting but needs further research to confirm ideas
I loved this book because it helped to expand ideas about astrology apart from all the usual points of sun/moon/rising signs etc that seem to explain a great deal but somehow is left wanting for further expansion. Being a'Hydra' (August 17) by Ms. Tennant's definition I can strongly attest tothe significance of her work since she 'explained' me away so well! But theattributes of this sign might just match me because my rising sign isPisces and moon sign is Cancer. Confusing. More research is needed - I'dlove to find out if more material on this topic is available. Thanks Ms.Tennant!

incredible detail
I really liked this book. It told me very accurrate things that I wanted to know about myself (being a gemini) and my mood swings. Catherine was able to tell me about my character that doesn't quite fit the traditional zodiacs analysis of the gemini's personality. This book helped me get insight about getting involved with someone. This person was quiet and didn't let many people into to see their emotion. This book told about their particular personality traits, and in turn has helped me to communicate with him. I totally recommend this book to anyone that is into the zodiac ... Read more

readable, but ultimately unsatisfactory
The Tokyo Zodiac Murders contain 3 related cases: first the locked-room murder of the painter Heikichi Umezawa, then the murder of a daughter of his 2nd wife, then the mass murder of the remaining 4 daughters and 2 nieces who lived with the painter and his 2nd wife. The 6 women's bodies were cut up, each with a different missing piece, and buried in different locations across Japan. The missing pieces were supposed to be sewed up to create the ideal woman body to be buried in an unknown location. Astrological nonsense played a largely hocus pocus role in the mass murder. Uninterested readers may feel free to skip the part.

Astrologer-cum-detective Mitarai solved the 40-year old case apparently without much help of his astrological expertise. In Mitarai's outburst, we found his unprovoked venom against Sherlock Holmes with largely unsubstantial arguments. Perhaps Holmes was wiser to leave his venom against Lecoq and Dupin unexplained. Despite Mitarai's unabashed sarcasm again "leg work", he ironically brought his Watson and us along on a wild goose chase from Tokyo to Kyoto only to find that a person no longer lived in his 40-year old address, and then from Kyoto to Osaka only to find the said person dead (of old age). At the end, we found a pointless locked room like so many others. It also became obvious that the cases were far from baffling. In fact they wouldn't have remained unsolved for so long if not for the sloppy police procedure, i.e. leg work, in pre-war Japan.

..and now, for something entirely different ...
This is the kind of book that I hope to find every time I pick up a new mystery. I do have to admit to a fondness for Japanese authors, especially mystery writers, and this particular book is an example of why. I have to find other works by this author in translation if they exist. I could NOT put this book down at all once I started.

The story begins some time back in the 1930s, and its focal point is a bizarre case known as the Tokyo Zodiac Murders. In the last will & testament of an artist under the influences of astrology and alchemy, he sets forth his plan to create the perfect woman...by killing off female relatives, including his daughters, to combine the best parts of all of them in his creation. The murders occurred, but this happened after the artist was found dead, in his studio, locked from the outside. The clues left little to go on, and solving the horrifying case became an obsession for many over the last decades. One detective, who is also a fortune teller, decides to take it on and solve it where others have failed. With the help of his friend, a fan of detective fiction, he tries to do what so many have attempted and failed over the a 40-year period of time.

An amazing book, one that will totally occupy you as you read. There are a number of possibilities that present themselves as the two friends delve into the past. The characterization is very well done, the writing is excellent, and the mystery itself (not to mention the solution) is nothing like I've ever read before. Hooray for a mystery I could really sink my teeth into.

I think this one will really appeal to people like myself who enjoy the different take on mysteries provided by Japanese mystery authors, and those who enjoy the classic locked-room/impossible crimes scenario. It isn't a mystery for cozy readers or readers who want an easy solution -- this requires the reader's participation the entire way. Also, if alchemy and astrology aren't your thing, then you may want to skip it.

An excellent mystery -- I enjoy finding these little gems now and then. Most highly recommended.

Elementary, Detective Mitarai!
This is one of those amazing books that, as soon as you have finished it, you are pushing into the hands of your friends and forcing them to read it immediately.A short, complex and innovative novel, it has an almost perfect balance between character-driven plot and straight analytical mental games that challenge you to unravel the puzzle before the author gives it away. Fans of the murder mystery genre will have a hard time not enjoying "The Tokyo Zodiac Murders".

The story starts off with a powerful hook.In 1936, an old eccentric artist named Heikichi Umezawa has been found dead, leaving behind a last will and confession detailing his obsession with alchemy and astrology, and his plan to construct a perfect woman, named Azoth.His plans are incredibly detailed, but basically involve taking body parts from several astrologically perfect women, then assembling those pieces together in sequence. He is dead before he can put his plans into place, but someone else finishes the deed.The murders are never solved, and remain one of Japan's most studied cases, with amature detectives pouring over the details in the same way as they do with Jack the Ripper nowadays.Fast forward to 1979, where Kazumi Ishioka, a freelance illustrator and fan of mysteries, gleans some new insight into the case and decides to pursue it.He enlists his friend, astrologer Kiyoshi Mitarai, and the two begin their dark journey into the mind of the Zodiac murderer, going down roads that seem obvious once the links are made, but appear impossible beforehand.

Author Soji Shimada knows how to construct a good murder mystery.He takes the classic Holmes/Watson team, a fact which he quickly acknowledges in the text of the book, and uses them to hunt an intricate puzzle, based on his own in-depth knowledge as an astrologer. Many mystery staples are here.A locked-door murder.A prime suspect dead before the murders occurred. He takes the basic elements and cliches, gives the reader a nod to let them know that he knows what he is doing, then shuffles them all around until you are completely baffled and utterly enthralled.Especially impressive is his use of multiple writing styles, such as flipping between Heikichi Umezawa insane confession and Ishioka and Mitarai's lighthearted banter.He also makes judicious use of charts and illustrations, even occasionally breaking the fourth wall and personally challenging the reader to solve the mystery before he reveals all in the next chapter.

The only shame with "The Tokyo Zodiac Murders" is that it is the only one of Shimada's many "Detective Mitarai Mystery" novels to be translated into English.As soon as you flip the last page, you are going to be hungry for more of the same.Let's hope they they are forthcoming! ... Read more

Amusing
This thin paperback was amusing to read, and surprisingly accurate when pointing out common personality flaws of the 12 signs of the zodiac.There are several books which seem to focus on the "dark side" of astrology from a "humorous" perspective, but this was the first, and quite possibly remains the best.However, there are a couple significant errors of fact (most Cancerians are known to have outstanding culinary skills, whereas Sayers portayed them as inept in this capacity).One note: the reprint differs from the 1st printing, as a couple of exceedingly nasty comments have been edited out.I suppose Sayers reconsidered advising Pisceans to commit suicide?Amusing without being overly cynical.I liked it.

I was given this book at Christmas and took a while to start it because Robert Edric meant nothing to me. It is quite simply a riveting read, and a book of great artistic merit.This is a very important novelist who seems to constantly operate beneath the celebrity radar.I am reminded of my friend J.G Farrell. I must respectfully disagree with the previous reviewers opinion and am wondering if he/she actually read the book? I have read the book and found it absolutely delightful! It was very enlightening and fun reading as well. In fact, the book is so above average, that it makes me seriously question whether the negative reviewer has an agenda of some kind. I thought Ms. Wu's book showed the greatest reverence for the spirit of the Tao, which is more than I can say for the mean-spirited reviewer.

AMAZING TO LISTEN TO ON CD!
I have just recently begun to listen to books on cd. I had read Zodiac many times and also read the follow up book Zodiac Unmasked and they are still best-sellers today. This is extremely well researched and well presented. I loved having this book on cd and I don't think any other author could have done a better job on the topic. I listened it to it on a road trip and it was so entertaining and scary.. Even in the daytime!

This book is VERY good! Robert Graysmith worked at the San Francisco chronicle during the time period this all happened and he did his share of research. He put together a very informative book about one of the killers who taunted police while killing many and GETTING AWAY WITH IT! I think this is a must read for any true crime fan and especially fans of the Zodiac.I thought Robert Graysmith did an excellent job on writing this book and I learned a lot about the case from this book.

It is above and beyond your typical and ever-so-predictable generic ... true crime paperbacks. This book is the best about the most enigmatic case in the history of true crimes story.I love good written book and this book is very very well written. I give this one 5 stars because of the drama, the tension and the facts that give action to this book.

Full/comprehensive account of the most chilling (in my opinion) true-crime story of the 20th century. If you don't mind hearing a writing style comparable to a Police Report, than you'll really enjoy this. I can't imagine a more detailed analysis of those crimes and, since Graysmith was close to the action, his opinions carry weight. From what I can tell, this is the best account available of these crimes and I would recommend this audio cd highly.

This book is a great starter for anyone wanting to know more (than average) about their sign. It has two sections: Zodiac and the Chinese Astrology. Both sections have a ton of information! Personality (both for the males and females), at work, at home, in love, in sex, in health, interests, friends, and compatibility with other signs. Everything is written like a quick overview with enough information to well, INFORM YOU but not a whole lot to confuse you, just enough to peak your interest in the subject. Great introductory astrology book
A lot of the other positive reviews here are spot-on so I won't go into massive detail.

This is a basic astrology book. It does not go into detail on houses, rising signs, etc. But you have to start at the beginning and this is a wonderful book to do it with.

I first came upon this book a little over a decade ago and it is still one of my absolute favorite books. This little paperback provides much more insight than you would expect. There's just something about this book - the accuracy of the sun sign descriptions is uncanny. I'm stunned at how the detailed characteristics of the different signs accurately describe many, many people I know down to subtle and minute details of people's personalities and behavior. The author does a wonderful job teasing out the nuances of the different signs in ways I've never seen described in other atrology books.

Like other readers I often come back to this book for reference for new relationships or to review signs that I am not as familiar with or just because. This book has been incredibly helpful in gaining insight into how people are, their motivations, people's good side and bad side, to be aware of your own sign's negative traits, etc. It could almost be considered a psychology book as it gets into the why of how different Sun signs behave.

Can't go wrong getting this wonderful book.

How many Libra women has Robin McNaughton known?
I believe in astrology.I have enjoyed books by authors such as Grant Lewi, Marion D. March, Joan McEvers, Robert Pelletier, and others.But Robin McNaughton is way off the mark.She claims that Libra women are hopelessly dependent on men and can be mistreated and still stay with a man.WRONG! My sister and I are both Libras, neither of us has ever been in a relationship just to be in a relationship, in fact I don't even believe in finding another half or someone to complete me.I found this description of Libra women a huge insult.And I would rather be alone than with a mean person, or even someone who just didn't thrill me.

One of the better compatibility books for Sun signs
Laid out well, so you don't have to do a lot of flipping to compare your Sun sign with that of someone else.However, the author didn't waste any space being original with the comparisons.The text, for example, for a male Taurus with a female Capricorn is simply reversed with the pronouns when you look at the compatibility between a female Cappy and a male Taurus.

Although I beleive the study of Sun signs simply scracthes the surface of a serious study of astrology, this is one of the better Sun sign books.

Fun and very informative for just a Sun Sign book
Basicly, this book is for entertainment purposes more than anything. It breifly discusses what cusps are and what the planets and zodiac houses mean, but there is no mention of rising signs and even though birth charts are mentioned, there are no charts or information about caculating your birth chart. In other words, this is one of those strictly sun sign books.

But with that being said, it's quite a good one at that. It doesn't just give you a small summarization of your sign, you get analysis of the favorable and unfavorable qualities of both a man AND a woman of a particular sign. Most books simply group everyone under their sun sign and ask us to assume that it applies to everyone. Each sign is even split up into 3 decans where you can get an even more specific summary of your charactoristics( Decans refer to different ruling planets that influence a sun sign personality depending on exactly what part of the month they were born. i.e: For Capricorn, The Saturn decan refers to people born between 12/22-1/1, The Venus decan for those born between 1/2 and 1/11, and the Mercury decan for those born between 1/12 and 1/20 ).

This was my first astrology book and even now, I come back to this one. I'm still quite taken aback at the accuracy of the text, even knowing that this book was copywritten originally in 1979 and has no mention of the rising sign. It's so fun to read about other things for each sign, such as love, marriage, health, friends, and even home( where it gives you decorating pointers on which type of decorating scheme would best suit your sign ).
And yes,there's also the compatibilty guide, which I find to be right on the money in a most uncanny way. Again, the author stresses the differences bewtween a man and a woman and offers comatibilty for not just Gemini and Taurus, but A Taurus man with a Gemini woman, or a Taurus woman with a Gemini man. The book also offers all the other interesting little facts and details that you enjoy in an astrology book such as famous people born under the sign, the sign's element, flower, gemstone, day, archangel, magical number, mode, qualities, primal desire, and planteary priciple.

It's not comprehensive for the serious astrologer, but for novices looking for a little fun, yet accurate insight about themselves and their partner, this book will be a great investment for next to nothing in price.
