I was very happy at how quickly the shipper had sent my product. thank you for this. and also, thank you for the reasonable prices and for not false advertising. I am enjoying my book greatly. thanks again.

4-0 out of 5 stars good job!
this book came to me in an orderly fashion and was in really good condition.thanks

4-0 out of 5 stars Outside is fooling
This book is chock full of information, much much more than the professor could ever get through in one semester. The information is very dry and bland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent zoology textbook
My background is in geology, but recently I've found my interest in zoology growing. This textbook was exactly what I was looking for--and more. My formal education in biology is quite meager, but Parts I and II of this book provided me with all the background (with good depth) I needed in order to understand the remaining three parts.

The writing was among the best I've ever read in a textbook: very clear and easy to read. The illustrations and photos are wonderful (and all but a few are in color). The authors and editors surely put in a great deal of effort to make this book easy to learn from and use... and they succeeded. I never thought I'd enjoy reading a textbook so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a classic
Hard to improve on the previous editions, however, I like the tremendous online support that accompanies this newest edition. As always the text is consistantly readable, and the authors do a good job of dealing with the broad scope of the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the Class
Years ago my daughter and I took a college zoology class together. We asked for permission to use this coloring book instead of participating in class dissection.Permission was given and my daughter and I made the highest grades in the class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource
This book sounds ridiculous, and I was mocked by my roommates for using it in college, but it taught me more than my Zoology professor and text book combined.A great resource for passing the tests as well as retaining the knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool
This is a unique approach to learning Zoology. The coloring aspect allows people to really connect what they are reading to the actual structures and ideas in taught in classes. Don't be fooled though, the idea isn't to just run through coloring everything to your heart's content. Follow the directions given and read the reading pages before/while you color and you'll learn a lot while having a little fun as well. The other coloring books available are especially recommended if you are a biologist and want to learn a little more about fields of biology that you are maybe not focusing on in college, Marine Biology or the human brain for example.

5-0 out of 5 stars a BIG help
I picked up this book for fun, and found it to be very useful in my Comparative Vertebrate Morphology Class in college.Great to learn all about different animals!Great as a gift for kids 12 & up.

4-0 out of 5 stars FINE DESCRIPTIVE DIAGRAMS
Designed for students taking biology-based courses in both High School and early University years, this colouring book is equipped with a lot of stuff, which will satisfy its audience.
The coverage of this atlas spanned across a wide variety of animals: from the minute simple ones to the largest and the most complex chordates. Its beautifully illustrated diagrams would appeal to students of biology, zoology, agriculture, veterinary medicine, and a long list of other ancillaries.
Each figure that featured in this book received adequate structural identification, inaddition to a well-described anatomical components. The elaborations given to their respective taxonomies are more than satisfactory.
In fact, there is hardly anything to complain about here: The price of this book is reasonable. Still, I wish that (in subsequent edition), the syllabus of this book should be enlarged, so as to accommodate more specimens. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hated this book!
I will begin by saying that I'm a pharmacy major, not a bio major. I wouldn't reccommend this book for a non-bio major. Don't let the title fool you; this book is packed full of information, 99% of which is USELESS! It seems like the authors tried to include miniscule detail imaginable. It is not uncommon to find 4 bold words (bold=important, supposedly) in a SINGLE SENTENCE! This makes it very hard to filter the useful information from the useless. I gave up trying to read this text after the first week of my course. It did not help me at all! Big waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars revisionists make it squeakie current
Excellent book.there are 38 chapters and I believe they extensively revamped and updated 37 of them.Get the most current edition, otherwise you will not have adapted as well as you could.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dense, but good
I bought this book for my Zoology 1 class, and found the book to be arranged in a logical manner with review material at the end of each chapter. Some of the material and explainations were dense and wordy, but overall I was highly please with the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Zoo Text
A very good book for the average college student in a zoology area.It covers the basic cell biology in the beginning, through meiosis. Then it proceeds up through single, and multi celled creatures, explaining the development, reproduction, adaptation and life cycles. The only downside is the price.between this book and the lab manual, the price will set you back somewhat. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ILLUSTRATIVE AND DESCRIPTIVE BREAKDOWN OFSPECIMENS
This "General Zoology Laboratory Manual" is a well-structured atlas, whose versatility would be appreciated by both students and teachers. The quality photos and electron micrographs used in this book are attractive.
Its primary target are Zoology undergrads; however, most High School biology tutors would find it irresistible. Its charts and pictures are accompanied by descriptive illustrations, which include accurate breakdown of the specimens' anatomy, morphology, and taxonomy.
This book assembled all those animals with characteristic features of zoological importance. Its scope ran from the lower invertebrates to the more advanced vertebrates. It is a fine practical guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Textbook and Reference
This is the best invertebrate zoology textbook on the market, perhaps the best ever written. The authors are not content to merely present in fine detail the classification, anatomy, physiology, behavior, and ecology of invertebrates, they present alternative interpretations and controversial opinions where these topics are concerned. In that way, invertebrate zoology comes alive as an active, important, and relevant field of study for understanding the ecology and evolutionary relationships of these organisms in a global setting. I highly recommend this book for a course of study or as a reference for Earth Science instructors who wish to solidify and deepend their knowledge and understanding of invertebrates.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best invert book on the planet
This text is the most comprehensive yet easy to read book on invertebrates out there. Using an evolutionary approach, it begins with the simplest organisms and ends with the most complex. Reproduction, organ systems, and lifestyle are discussed in detail giving the reader a functional view of a continuum of simple to complex nervous systems, digestive systems and locomotive and reproductive life styles. This book explains invertebrate zoology using techniques and concepts that can be used to study most biology topics in a systematic fashion. It is a must own for any undergraduate or post graduate!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ""Bible" of Invertebrate Zoology
A modern replacement of Libby Hyman's classic series, but, even so, is now beoming out of date because of the rapid advances in molecular biology. Dr. Barnes is deceased and I understand that Dr. Ruppert has no plans to update the book, a horrendous undertaking. Nevertheless, I know of no substitute for this fine text. Readers should also refer to Margulis & Schwartz "Five Kingdoms".

5-0 out of 5 stars Sets the standard for Invertebrate Zoology texts
Ruppert and Barnes' text, now in its 6th edition sets the standard for invertebrate zoology texts. The authors provide adequate depth for undergraduate courses in invertebrate zoology, and good fodder for graduatestudents starting in the discipline as well.

There are outstandingcollections of line drawings in the text -- a method of illustration Iprefer to photographs for most instructional purposes.

There is goodcoverage of invertebrate animal groups, but, since it's published in 1994,there are a few places where the book is becoming dated. There is, forexample, no information about the Cycliophora, the latest invertebratephyla to be proposed.

I hope that there will continue to be neweditions of this text produced.I cut my teeth on the 3rd edition, andother editions have figured prominently as I have worked through mygraduate and professional careers.

Top-notch material. If you areconsidering which text to select for an invertebrate zoology course, I urgeyou to give this book a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Science Textbooks Aren't Boring
O.K., *Zoology* is a textbook. Most of us have had to plow through a honker monster science textbook at one time or another, and usually the sight of us doing so is pretty ugly. Not so with *Zoology*.I picked upthis book because of the catchy cover, and I started reading. And I keptreading. Not cover-to-cover, as with a novel, but with increasinginterest.First of all, because this is a book that is beautifullywritten; the authors care about prose and about making material accessible. Secondly, I was hooked by the evolution section:this book does not messaround and go all tippy-toes with Darwin in order to placate Creationists. Despite the fact that publishers, to avoid controversy, have cut back ontextbooks with evolution sections, this book addresses evolution squarelyand is (thankfully) devoid of the grossly wimpy position thateveryone-gets-an-equal-viewpoint-no-matter-how-ignorant-they-are-about-evolution. *Zoology* gives it to you straight. Not only that, it's the only textbookI know of that has glimmers of the writers' personalities shining through. Even if you aren't taking a science course, the book is well worth dippinginto for clear information on a wealth of Zoological topics.Theillustrations are magnificent and helpful at the same time.If you want agreat science text to have around the house, this is probably the one foryou.Browse, look at pictures, admire the writing, and if you have thisbook assigned for a class, consider yourself lucky. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but PETA would probably like it
This text lacks organization and completeness. It also attempts to evoke emotion in the reader through its descriptions of certain species, such as whales, seals, and manatees.
In lesson 2 of Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day (Zoology 2), information is presented about the differences between porpoises and dolphins that confuses.Killer whales are one of the species that belong to the dolphin (Delphinidae) family, yet they do not have beaks, and the males of the species have triangular dorsal fins. These attributes, however, are given in the textbook as identifying characteristics of PORPOISES.Later in the book's detailed description of killer whales, this confusion is perpetuated by a) the fact that killer whales have a separate subsection from dolphins and by b) the absence of any statement that killer whales are, in fact, a type of dolphin. The reader might easily assume that killer whales are porpoises, or are from some other family altogether. This problem, combined with the humanization of various creatures through comments such as"poor whale" , "innocently swimming" (how can a creature without a conscience be otherwise?), and "pinniped peril" make it difficult to view this book as a serious academic science text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the 5th Day
Using this book to teach science has brought joy to our home school. When I wake up on the mornings that we have Science class I am so excited. I can hardly wait to get the school day started so we can learn more about the world God created.

My degree is in Communication and I teach Literature to High School students. My weakness is Science. Never before have I learned so much about the field. I am no longer intimidated by Science.

This book is well written. It is organized in such a way that it flows as you read it. The conversational style lends it self easily to discussions with the children. When we leave a chapter we have real understanding of the subject covered, not just more knowledge. This I think is a mark of a good author and a book that leads a student to a well-educated mind.

The illustrations are beautiful and serve as excellent markers for the children as we go back to previous chapters reviewing the information to increase long term comprehension. They also hold the attention of younger students while you read and discuss more complicated ideas with the older students.

In my opinion this book could be successfully used to teach a kindergarten student as well as a 7th or 8th grader, requiring less and more homework from the respective students. If I did not home school my children I would still want it in my library. Not only has it taught my children, it teaches me.

The CD of notebook pages is an excellent resource. After the student has read and understood the concepts taught he can use the notebook pages to express his comprehension. These pages serve at least two purposes. He writes what he has learned which serves as an anchor in his memory and they become a personal science book for his records, an accomplishment he can be proud of in the future as he looks back on his elementary years.

I am not easily enamored with curriculum. If you want your child to really understand our world regarding the oceans, seas, and rivers and all that live in them this is the book for you. I give this one a 5 star rating. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A puzzling story
Henry Elinsky, a college drop-out, moves to New York where he resides with his brother David and David's girlfriend Lucy.Lacking skills for a more prestigious job, Henry finds employment in Central Park Zoo.Henry's lackluster life takes a turn for the better, or so he thinks, when he finds a friend in Margaret, a young woman temporarily staying in his apartment building.

I admit that I chose to read this book because the author grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland.I honestly don't know if I liked this book or not. What seemed to be lacking was my feeling connected to a person (or even an animal) in the story.I kept seeing glances of many characters but felt I never did truly know their stories.Later I was thinking that perhaps this *was* the purpose of the story.Simply put, at a very precarious time in the life of Henry Elinsky, he was not attached to anyone. He felt alienated from school, from friends, and even from family.

This book may actually be good reading for a young person who is in a state of "drift".Haven't we all had such a state as a young adult?

POSSIBLE SPOILERS: There were puzzling things in the story - all of which made me crazy. Why was Margaret such a tease? Why had no positive things happened to Henry? How did he make the decision to go back to school? Why did Henry get such a weird last letter from Margaret? Why were Henry's parents' problems and Lucy's annoyance only alluded to and not explored more deeply?

4-0 out of 5 stars Growing up in the 21st Century
Just over fifty years ago, J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye was published. The teenage protagonist of the novel, Holden Caulfield, gained extraordinary attention from writers and readers as a rebellious outcast living in a society he did not feel he belonged in.Through Salinger's work, Holden was a hero that would staple the "coming of age" story throughout the twentieth century.Fifty one years later, in 2002, Catcher in the Rye remained a present and fundamental literary influence: Jonathon Safran Foer wrote the novel Everything is Illuminated featuring a similar teenage protagonist trying to find his own identity in a world filled with disconnection.Three years later, Foer's next novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close honed in on a character even more similar to Salinger's Holden.Oskar, a young boy destined to learn about his father, family, and the meaning of life, wanders on the hard streets of a post-9/11 New York. Now it is 2007, and Ben Dolnick's debut novel, Zoology, reiterates the "coming of age" story in a different way.
Zoology is a short novel about Henry Elinsky, a troubled college dropout who is trying to find his place in the world. The novel is divided into three sections."Home," the first section, introduces Henry and his family, and the problems that exist between them in Washington DC.After dropping out of college, Henry is forced to work with his father at the elementary school, a situation humiliating and defeating. But Henry is apathetic, and once in the second section of the novel, "New York," Henry is rescued by his brother. Thanks to his brother's invitation, Henry leaves home to move in with his brother David and his brother's antagonizing artist girlfriend, Lucy. The trio lives in a ritzy downtown Manhattan apartment that Lucy's parents pay for.Henry finds himself working at the Central Park Zoo, befriending the doormen of his apartment building, and meeting Margaret, an object of true obsession. The final section of the book, "Virginia," reunites Henry and his parents at a vacation home in Virginia.
Zoology is a "coming of age" story. The plot tracks Henry's journey through growing up the hard way.Henry encounters more failures than successes throughout the novel's sprawling naturalistic New York streets.Henry fails at many of the zoo's jobs, fails to completely swoon over his addictive love interest, fails to fully connect with his brother and his brother's girlfriend, fails to become the aspiring musician he dreamed throughout his childhood, and fails to completely connect with his parents. But there are successes. The events within the plot reflect a caretaking motif that Dolnick pulls of brilliantly.Through the prevailing downward spiral of failure, the novel's bleak narrative transforms into a shining, juxtaposed ending of success.Henry learns to take care of others, and learns to judge events in his life realistically.
Ben Dolnick has not written the new Catcher in the Rye.Zoology is light-hearted and temporary. The emotional affects and the grit and grime of the teenage life are hardly present.Henry is not an anti-hero of rebelliousness, cigarette-puffing and binge drinking.Henry stays in his own mind, and this is where Dolnick succeeds.Without the realistic shock value, Dolnick is able to maintain through his spiraling narrative a melodramatic play that emphasizes and dramatizes events in an average teenage life.Henry is an average teenager, just an ordinary guy.He has his perks and his flaws, but he is not outrageous, exaggerated, or unbelievable.Dolnick brings forward the inner-workings of a teenage boy who is more lost, confused, and naïve than anything else.
By capturing the emotional level of a teenager accurately, Zoology succeeds in creating a more realistic "coming of age" story than any of Dolnick's literary predecessors. The language is simplistic and often boring, and reflects Henry's pacing through life wondrously. The pacing of life from one event to the next in a spiral of ups and downs, positives and negatives, is magnetic and often simple. The rules of attraction between events and human relationships that dominate the novel reflect the rules of attraction that make up a teenage boy's life.
At times it is not easy to like Henry. At times it is not easy to trust Henry. But Dolnick incorporates these disconnections between reader and protagonist on purpose.Henry, like many young males, are hard to understand and hard to associate with. But by the end of Zoology, Dolnick has provided the reader with a chance to understand something they may never have experienced, or may have forgotten: the hardships of youth.
Dolnick's debut is not the next Catcher in the Rye.The style often seems too simplistic for its own good and at times too superficial for its own good as well. But Dolnick is straightforward. The novel's title alludes to the classification of animals, and Dolnick pulls off his own form of classification with masterful clarity, even when a clear picture only reveals spiraling confusion.Henry and the other characters are at times easy to see and know, and at times are easy to relate to.For Dolnick, the novel reflects the reader's journey of understanding as much as it does Henry. And the progress of understanding is crucial to growing up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad but compelling humor exposes each life of quiet desperation
This book is a confrontation with sadness. It is as if Henry wears special lenses that peer directly into the souls of each character to reveal their disappointment. It's a wonder he is so personally directionless when there is no one around him who is hopeful or enthusiastic about life.Even those who appear so on face value are shown to be covering up for their deeper sorrow. It does become a gentle assault on those who would dare to claim they are happy. It's understandable that some would find it depressing particularly those unwilling to confront their own sadness. But to those who dare enter this world of the familiar, common, ordinary, inconsequential baggage that weighs us all down everyday, there is the question of hope. How does anyone hold on to a hope that is real when hope can so easily slip away? That seems to be the real question that Henry is asking. Is it love, sex, friendship, purpose?Despite their promise, they each fail him in ways that are and tragic, subtly humorous, and universally familiar. There is a shower scene and a goat, but more importantly large themes to be discovered within its very small scope.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Other than the shower scene, the second half of this book left me disappointed.I found it sad and pointless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
This book is horrible.Extremely boring.Characters are boring and there is just no story.any attempt at humor didn't work.I read about 1/2 of the book and put it away.Don't waste a dime on this book and don't borrow it for free. Grade F ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bats, Bugs and Birds
This book is a highlight of our school day.It is an exceptionally well written book and full of photos and diagrams that fully explain to a young grade school student what might otherwise be difficult terms like "echolocation", "airfoil", and "binomial nomenclature."Sprinkled in are some pretty fun and easy to do at home experiments. One simple one has been to set an egg on our counter and candle it everyday to see the changes that take place.
My children love keeping a science notebook of all our new facts and terms learned and to draw the diagrams into the notebook that are in the text book.
My children even go back months later and reread their notebooks just for the fun of it.That is real learning!

5-0 out of 5 stars One subject all year?
OK, I was sceptical! Everywhere I turned people were raving about the Jeannie Fulbright science books, but I just didn't get it. How could you spend an entire year studying just ONE thing?? What a waste of time! Wouldn't we get bored? Finally, I gave in to the peer preasure and ordered Zoology 1 thinking that if the books were THAT good, we could at least give them a try- for a month or two. Well, they ARE that good! and my whole outlook has changed. There is more than enough information for an entire year of study! There is just NO WAY we could get through it any faster. And what facinating information it is! I already learned a few things just by paging through it and my children (who have gotten a few glimpses of the beautiful pictures) are so excited to start. There are plenty of fun experiments (very important in this hands-on family) but they are not too complicted or time consuming (also very important) and the necessary supplies are inexpensive and easy to come by. And each book comes with a password so you can access the course website where there is EVEN MORE information! How cool is that? I am now a firm believer and can't wait to study ALL of these wonderful books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Fulbright Does It Again
This is the third book in the Exploring Creation series for the elementary level that Mrs. Fulbright has written. They continue to get better & better! I found the Astronomy book soon after it came out (the first one written) & I have not even thought of switching from this curriculum! Written in the order of creation, Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day discusses all the creates that the Lord created first - birds, insects, bats, & flying reptiles.

As with the previous two books (Astronomy & Botany), Zoology 1 is written in a wonderful style that draws the reader (and listeners) in. My children love to sit & listen to me read them science (ages 9 & 5 - boys too!!). The experiments are easy to do (a huge must for me!) & the notebooking activities are wonderful in helping my children create not only wonderful notebooks to preserve their work, but keepsakes that they will enjoy looking at in later years.

Mrs. Fulbright has a wonderful grasp of the science behind it all, the words to express it so all understand, and the gift to connect all back to our wonderful Creator God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars is too low of a rating!
We appreciate Mrs. Fulbright giving due credit to God, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Our boys four years and almost six absolutely love this book! They listen attentively to the text and move 100 miles an hour when it's time for an experiment.

Science is now our eldest son's favorite subject. We are now looking at the world through completely different lenses.

Thusfar, we have had a delightful time going on the scavenger hunt, examining insects, and performing the glider experiment.

As for me, I read ahead for fun at bedtime to myself.

Thank you for sharing your expertise and passion for God's creatures with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!
I am 9 years old. This book is about birds, insects, flying reptiles and bats. I liked this alot more than the other things we did for science in the past. I am amazed at the things birds can do. I am exited about doing the next book. ... Read more
