Book Description
This classic textbook of invertebrate zoology--used for many years in countries around the world-- has been completely revised in a new edition. It has been made more readable and concise, while incorporating significant research advances made since the last edition was published in 1971. The work surveys all invertebrate phyla, emphasizing those aspects of biology that lend insight into their evolutionary adaptations and phylogeny.Wherever possible, the latest cladistic analyses for the phyla are included to make the book a useful text for graduate students and undergraduates who need to understand the diversity of the animal kingdom. The text has been rewritten and completely reorganized, and now includes the first cladistic analysis of all the invertebrate phyla, as well as newly discovered phyla and classes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be standing next to your dictionary on the shelf.
This is a book which, unfortunately, many people don't know about but would do well to have in their collection.Mr. Elster appears to have researched the words covered in the book very well, and he tells the history of many of them.A pattern that quickly becomes evident is how some words are continuously mispronounced for many years, whereby eventually the erroneous pronunciation can become the standard - resulting in dictionaries adopting them over the correct traditional pronunciations. Some people may think this is no big deal, that we can just keep changing our language according to how most people say things, even if they're just plain wrong. To me, there's something really sad about that. This book is so valuable because it captures most of the words that are most often violated, and it makes a point of what's happening.Probably the best example in the book is the word "flaccid".When you read what Elster says about it, you realize how wrong it is to say it any other way than "FLAK-sid".After many years, the incorrect way of saying it became standard, because not enough people give a damn enough to buy a book like this and start caring about how they speak their own language.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOW IS IT REALLY PRONOUNCED?
Is it GON doh laor gon DOH la or either?(Only the first is correct). Did you know that
"dour" should really be pronounced "doo -er" (long u, rhymes with fewer) and not "daw-er" (rhymes with tower)?Did you know that "forte" is actually two words - Italian, pronounced "for - TAY" and a direction of loudness in music, but also French, pronounced "fort" and meaning someone's particular ability?
And that THEN it is not pronounced "for TAY"? If you are a fan of the Queen's English, rightly spoken, this is your book! ... Read more

Book Description

Are they needed? To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you;some have been in print for a century;various reprints have appeared and since vanished."
—Eric Korn,Times Literary Supplement

Charles Robert Darwin (1880-1882) has been widely recognized since his own time as one of the most influential writers in the history of Western thought. His books were widely read by specialists and the general public, and his influence had been extended by almost continuous public debate over the last 130 years. New York University Press' edition makes it possible for the first time to review Darwin's public literary output as a whole, plus his scientific journal articles, his private notebooks, and his correspondence.

This is the first complete edition containing all of Darwin's published books, featuring definitive texts recording original paginations with Darwin's indexes retained. All illustrations and plates are presented, inclucing 82 color plates of birds and mammals and several folding maps and plates. The set also features a general introduction and index, and textural introductions in each volume.

Book Description
Handbook of the Zoology of Amphistomes provides a comprehensive survey on the morphology, ecology, systematics, and zoogeography of amphistomes, which are a group of digenetic trematodes parasitic in vertebrates. The handbook features the special morphological characteristics of amphistomes, including the structure and types of muscular organs; a short diagnosis for each species (when possible), as well as a line drawing of each adult fluke; a zoogeographical analysis, including the host-parasite coevolution, distributional patterns, and characterization of faunas within the zoogeographical realm; and a possible evolutionary scenario based on holomorphological characteristics.Parasitologists, helminthologists, zoologists, and biologists working with ecological associations will find this book an essential reference source for their work with amphistomes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary projection on future zoology
Is a shame we are the only species in the rational process of extincting ourselves, but this projection is call for hope for life in the planet, with a rational thread of thought, perfect drawings and wording.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for bringing an otherwise dry subject to life.
This book delighted our daughter with all its unknown monsters. With minimal intervention from us, she was able to grasp the possibilities of the theory of evolution, without even realising she was being educated.

This book is fun and educational. Highly recommended for bringing a dry subject to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I already wrote a review on this book, but I wanted to say......
As I have stated, "After Man: A Zoology of the future is a great book for any one who's interested in future evolutionthat isn't like "The Future Is Wild". Although the book seems to have more imagination than "The Future Is Wild", nothing looked alien to me and resembled like organisms our own time. Even today we observe waterbirds with more toes or neck bones than others, just like the reedstilt is to other mammals. And there used to be flightless auks swimming in Arctic waters.

The only complain I have is that it seems like a complete zoology of the future, but infact it isn't. It lacked a field guide to the oceans of the future but, as Dixon stated, the results would be boring and only exciting to the specialist. Other than that, it explained nearly all terrestrial ecosystems and that's all that matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evolution About 50 Million Years From Now
According to Dougal Dixon in 50 million years man will be extinct. This certainly is a possibility. If this does not happen we certainly hope that man will have evolved away from war and greed. Based upon the life expectancy of our sun, the earth and evolutionary processes will be here for up to another 5000 million years.

Dixon does a masterful job of speculating how life forms will evolve over the next 50 million years. He presents detailed color drawings of the new life forms. His work is visionary and will help the reader form his own vision of the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars When we were all evolving brains, what was Dixon doing???
If you like unimaginative phony crap you'll love this book. The proposed animals within this book are utterly stupid and improbable. An antelope that feels through the snow with its incredibly dumb looking antlers?A DIURNAL and TERRESTRIAL mammal that for some God-forsaken reason lacks eyes of any kind?Primates that don't evolve to fit man's niche, but instead take on the roles of otters and flying squirrels? The thing has got nonsense written all over it.The "future animals" proposed for this book were not well thought out and somebody, please find Mr. Dixon a liguist, and FAST!Some of the names he gives these future animals are so stupidly childish that they actually detract from a creature's plausibility.A vortex? A posset? What jerk scientist of the future is naming these things? Can he please be institutionalized?I admit the pictures were well done and pre-teen children would probably enjoy this immensely.I know I would've when I was 10 or 11, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's just that Dougal Dixon begins the book in a very advanced scientific way discussing food pryramids, chains of evolution, and ecological niches, but then converts to unscientific baloney around page 30.All in all, I just don't think it's cut out for people over the age of 12 or so, unless you are just looking for fun and imaginative creatures. But in that case, why restrict your mind with the laws of evolution? Why not pick up a copy of the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual or something like that with lots of mythological and imaginary creatures?I find that books intended to showcase the fantastic, do much better outside the realm of (somewhat-boring) science. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pity Ol'Bulbnose, the homeliest of his tribe
Pity the Bulbnose Unicornfish. Almost all the rest of his cousins among the surgeonfish are shapely with brilliantly contrasting liveries of white, yellow, black, blue, orange, purple, green and scarlet. Ol' Bulbnose is the baggypants vaudeville comic of the tribe, dressed in gray or olive drab with black speckles and wearing a clown nose.
He does get a blue stripe on his long dorsal fin, because even the dullest surgeonfish is a little sporty.
Picking the handsomest would be difficult, but it might be the Powder Blue Surgeonfish, with its blue body, black face, white chin, white fins below and bright yellow fins on top, outlined with black, then more white.
The most familiar to snorkelers and divers in Hawaii and probably worldwide, is the all-yellow Yellow Tang, an aquarium favorite.
There could hardly be a better guide to the 80 species of surgeonfishes than John Randall, who did his doctoral dissertation on Hawaii's Convict Surgeonfish and pioneered in using scuba diving to study fish in the water.
s a result, he has scientifically described 19 new fish genera and more than 500 new species, said to be a record among living ichthyologists.
In "Surgeonfishes of Hawai`i and the World," he also describes his and his students' encounters with the venomous caudal barbs on some surgeonfish.
Surgeonfishes can be good eating and some get pretty big -- as much as a yard long. In Hawaiian, the are called kala or kole.
Randall's little book, one of the dozens he has written about fish, is more authoritative than most guides and the illustrations, almost all in color, are mostly superb, although a few of the skittish kinds have been hard to photograph.
Several species of surgeonfish were first described from individuals found in fish markets, and although Linnaeus included a few surgeonfish in his first classification of animals in the mid-18th century, new species of surgeonfish are still being discovered from time to time.
