   Extractions: The names of Robert Adrain 's parents are unknown but we do know that his father was a schoolteacher and that he made mathematical instruments. When Adrain was about fifteen years of age both his parents died. Adrain received a good education but this education did not include any mathematics beyond arithmetic. His own curiosity, however, led him to study books on mathematics which explained algebraic notation and so he became essentially a self-taught mathematician. After his parents died, Adrain had to work to support both himself and his four brothers and sisters and it was entirely natural for this well educated young man to earn his living as a teacher. By 1798 Adrain, a young man of 22, had established himself sufficiently well financially to allow him to marry Ann Pollock. They had seven children, one of whom, Garnett Bowditch Adrain, became a Democratic member of Congress. The year 1798 was crucial for Adrain in addition to being the year in which he married. He took part in the Irish rebellion of that year but, in order to understand what this was about, we should give some background to explain the political events which led up to this event that was to result in a complete change in Adrain's life.

He stayed there until 1800 when the family moved to York, PA. In York Adrain became Principal of York County Academy. The Mathematical Correspondent , an early American mathematics journal, began publishing in 1804 under the editorship of George Baron and Adrain became one of its main contributors. Baron had taught mathematics to a few soldiers at West Point before it was USMA, so that establishes a nice link. Need to look into this Baron connection more carefully. St. Andrew's web site has more detail and references. Manuscripts: These are the only two letters indexed under Adrain in The West Point Thayer Papers Compiled by V. Frederick Rickey, beginning November 2000.

He was professor of mathematics at Queen's University (now Rutgers) New Brunswick from 1809 to 1813 then at Columbia University from 1813 to 1826. Adrain published on the normal law of errors in 1808, one year before Gauss . He studied the catenary and other curves. He gave 1/319 as the elipticity of the Earth, a figure better than Laplace who gave 1/336. R OBERT ADRAIN, LL.D., was born in Carrickfergus, Ireland, September 30, 1775, and died in New Brunswick, New Jersey, August 10, 1843. He participated in the Irish rebellion of 1798, during which he received a severe wound, and was obliged to fly to America. He taught school in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and was a contributor to scientific journals. From 1809 to 1813 he was Professor of Mathematics in Queens College, now Rutgers College , and then resigned to accept the Chair of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Columbia , where he continued until his resignation in 1825. He then returned to Rutgers College as Professor of Mathematics, remaining until 1827. In this year he accepted the Professorship of Mathematics in the University of Pennsylvania which he held until 1834 when he resigned. He edited Hutton's Mathematics, published essays on the figure and magnitude of the earth and on gravity, and was Editor of the Mathematical Diary from 1825 to 1829. He received the degree of Doctor of Laws from Columbia in 1818. He married Anna Pollock of New Jersey.
