Later he was canonized as Saint Albert the Great. He was both student and teacher of alchemy and chemistry, and an alleged magician. He firmly believed in the benefits of botany claiming various plants, rocks, and amethysts improved clairvoyance. Like Aristotle, he thought nature and men's lives were controlled by the stars and plants. Notably he taught Saint Thomas Acquinas and made several significant contributions to chemistry. Legend has it he turned based metal into gold, but there is no evidence of this in his notes on alchemy. Legend also has it that when a dinner guest of William II, the Count of Holland, on New Year's Day, 1242, Magnus suggested the guests dine outdoors. Wanting a piece of land for a monastery he graciously changed the freezing day into a warm spring afternoon with blooming flowers and singing birds. LIFE Albert, eldest son of the Count of Bollstädt, was born at Lauingen, Swabia, in the year 1205 or 1206, though many historians give it as 1193. Nothing certain is known of his primary or preparatory education, which was received either under the paternal roof or in a school of the neighbourhood.

Extractions: Albertus Magnus, also known as Albert the Great, was a scholar, philosopher, bishop, and doctor of the Church, as well as the teacher of St. Thomas Aquinas. Canonized in 1931, he was declared the patron saint of the natural sciences, a fitting role considering his tremendous influence in the field. Albertus was born in Lauingen, Swabia, around the year 1193, although some sources place his date of birth in the thirteenth century. He came from a family that was included among the lower echelons of nobility and was educated at the University of Padua in Italy. Joining the Dominican order of mendicant friars in 1223, Albertus then studied theology in Germany. Later he became the first German Dominican to rise to the master of theology post at the University of Paris. It was there that he was introduced to the works of Aristotle, which were newly translated into Latin from Arabic and Greek. Heavily influenced by the writings, throughout his life Albertus attempted to integrate Aristotelian thought and the philosophy of the Church. Most likely while still living in Paris, Albertus began a long and prolific career of writing. He composed commentaries of the

Extractions: "THE BOX OF SECRETS" Albertus Magnus, born under the name of Albert de Groot, was born in Larvington an der Donau, Swabia (now Germany) between the years of 1193 and 1206, although, this date as well as his date of death (presumably November 15th, 1280 ) is still being debated to this very day. It has been said of Albertus, that he was a "Magnus in Magia, Major in Philosophia, and Maximus in Theologia". Among his many talents he was also a physician, an astrologer, and physisist. He was also a master of the magical arts (black and white). Albertus' detractors have accused him of holding communications with Satan and using "The Black Arts" to create a "living automa", on the other side of the coin, it has also been alleged that the Virgin Mary appeared to a young Albertus and bestowed upon him the entire sum of all the knowledge of the Universe past, present and future. Albertus was self taught in natural science ( of which he became the Patron Saint in 1941 ), and was regarded as an expert in logic, rhetoric, mathematics, ethics,and metaphysics. He was also the only man to be refered to as "Magnus" i.e. "The Great" in his own lifetime and won the title of Bishop of Ratisbon. After becoming an instructor at The University of Paris, Albertus became mentor to St. Thomas Aquinas, to whom he left the secret of the Philosophers Stone, a magical substance which could turn lead into gold and could unlock the secret to immortality.

What better laboratory than a monastery, safe from the greedy intentions of profane? Saint Albert the Great Introduction READING Sister Mary Albert's lively portrait of her patron saint, we come to grasp the attractiveness of Albert's robust vigor, his breadth of intellect open to the world, and his depth of soul so rooted in God that even his contemporaries were led to call him "great." We can understand why Thomas Aquinas was so taken with his older confrere's desire to explore, his willingness to dialogue, and to take bold stands. Such shared values integrated and held in balance by a clarity of faith and consurning love of neighbor put them both on the cutting edge of theological development and made them "risk-takers" in their service of Church and society. History has accorded Thomas the greater role. Indeed, when Dante (Paradiso X) approaches the garland of lights that seemed caught up in dance, it is Thomas Aquinas who steps forward to introduce the luminous band, beginning with "Albert of Cologne, my friend and teacher." A few years ago the late Father James A. Weisheipl, O.P., explored Thomas's relationship to his friend and teacher. While Thomas derived much from his master, as his writings show, the reverse is not true. Albert, it seems, did not keep up with his student's work until after Thomas death, when he took it upon himself to defend what had been their common stand against traditionalist critics. By then well advanced in age, Albert had Thomas' works read to him, so the story goes. Thus it is only in Albert's later works, written mostly after Thomas' death, and the scripture commentaries in particular, that Thomas' influence is apparent.
