    Extractions: Guillaume Bachet de Mizériac est né à Bourg en Bresse en 1572. Son grand-père, Pierre Bachet de Mizéraic était issu d'une très ancienne famille bressane. Il avait acquis le fief de Méziriac (actuellement Mézériat), et portait le titre de seigneur de Vauluysant et de Lionnière. Il fut conseiller et lieutenant du baillage de Bresse sous Henri II, puis juge-mage du duc de Savoie Emmanuel-Philibert. L'oeuvre de Guillaume Bachet se confond un peu avec celle de son frère Claude-Gaspar. Ils publièrent souvent ensemble leurs essais poétiques en 1615 : "Chansons spirituelles et dévotes sur toutes les principales fêtes de l'année et sur divers autres sujets, composées nouvellement par Guillaume et Claude Gaspar Bachet, frères" . Le recueil est dédié à François de Sales.

Rolle was born at Bourg in 1581, and died in 1638. Bachet was the earliest writer who discussed the solution of indeterminate equations by means of continued fractions. Marin Mersenne , born in 1588 and died at Paris in 1648, was a Franciscan friar, who made it his business to be acquainted and correspond with the French mathematicians of that date and many of their foreign contemporaries. In 1634 he published a translation of Galileo's mechanics; in 1644 he issued his Cogita Physico-Mathematica , by which he is best known, containing an account of some experiments in physics; he also wrote a synopsis of mathematics, which was printed in 1664.
