What distressingly few of us realize is that almost all of these Taylors, except for that of the Taylor series, are the same Taylor, Geoffrey Ingram, who was (not merely by this criterion) one of the great physicists of the twentieth century, among the last masters of both theory and experiment. Aside from one early experiment on wave mechanics (where he got accurate results, which nobody could make sense of at the time), Taylor had nothing to do with so-called modern physics, with quantum mechanics and relativity, continuing instead the tradition of classical mechanics, particularly fluid mechanics and the theory of plastic (that is, permanently deformable) materials. He pioneered many fields of research which are still active, if not downright huge, and then turned to something else, and something else again, almost always finding simple, elegant and above all practical ways of coming to grips with them. He was, for instance, the originator of the statistical theory of turbulence, and the author of fully a quarter of the papers in the standard collection of seminal papers . Had he not been distracted by war work, he very likely would have scooped Kolmogorov in discovering the turbulent energy cascade (he'd been working on the component ideas since 1917). When, in 1945, he learned of these ideas from a graduate student (Batchelor) and a German prisoner of war (Heisenberg!), he foresaw the highly abstract, un-applied character the theory of turbulence would assume, and turned away from the subject. This is typical of the old British tradition of applied mathematics and mechanics, which he embodied; but a bit amusing in the grandson of George Boole, the founder of mathematical logic.

    Extractions: Schedule May 15, 2000 Comments on the Batchelor/Crighton Memorial Lectures George Keith Batchelor (1920-2000) was a towering figure in fluid mechanics and contributed profoundly to many of its subareas, among them the theory of homogeneous turbulence and microhydrodynamics. As the founding editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, a position he held for more than forty years, George exerted a profound influence on fluid dynamics and set exacting standards. He founded and led for some thirty years the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge, and made it possible for generations of first-rate fluid dynamicists to come together. George was instrumental in developing EUROMECH as a major force for mechanics in Europe. A long list of monographs of great quality and longevity emerged during his editorship for forty-five years of Cambridge Monographs on Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. David George Crighton (1942-2000) was an accomplished fluid dynamicist with particular expertise in aeroacoustics and the interaction of vortex flows with solid surfaces. He was admired for his applied mathematics skills and for his leadership of the fluid dynamics community in the world at large, within Cambridge in particular. In 1986, he became a professor of applied mathematics at Cambridge and took over the headship of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in 1991. He succeeded George Batchelor as the editor of Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and was the Master of Jesus College since 1997. David's cheerfulness, commitment and continued hardwork, even while suffering from cancer for a year or so before his untimely death, were phenomenal and universally admired.

George is credited with creating the operating lease business for used aircraft when he pioneered operating leases for marginal developing South American carriers, among others, in the 1960s. His company, International Air Leases also pioneered the export of used Boeing and Douglas aircraft to Asia and Africa as well. In the early 1950s he founded Arrow Air, which went on to have a checkered history (sometimes competing with operators using leased George Batchelor aircraft), but which is once more going strong under new management. The future of Batchelor's current finance operation, Aerospace Finance, is unknown. He was also a renowned philanthropist, having contributed close to $100 million to South Florida charitable and public service organizations, including $15 million to build the Batchelor Children's Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He is survived by his new wife (whom he married only three weeks before his death), four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
