The basis of these communities is not racial. It is of course religious. This is a superficial view. What is interesting to know is why is a Parsi a Parsi and why is a Christian a Christian, why is a Muslim a Muslim and why is a Hindu a Hindu? With regard to the Parsi, the Christian and the Muslim it is smooth sailing. Ask a Parsi why he calls himself a Parsi he will have no difficulty in answering the question. He will say he is a Parsi because he is a follower of Zoraster. Ask the same question to a Christian. He too will have no difficulty in answering the question. He is a Christian because he believes in Jesus Christ. Put the same question to a Muslim. He too will have no hesitation in answering it. He will say he is a believer in Islam and that is why he is a Muslim. Now ask the same question to a Hindu and there is no doubt that he will be completely bewildered and would not know what to say.

Extractions: The topic of caste is one which has attracted a huge amount of interest (and a proportional amount of hatred) throughout the world, and across socio-cultural and religious divisions. Indeed, it has come to the point whereby any discussion on Hindutva necessitates at least touching on the caste system. The caste system has become, in many such discussions, a way of degrading Hindutva, and has come to be used as a method of "proving" what is seen by many as the inhumanity, cruelness, barbarity and inequality of Hindutva. It is important, therefore, that Hindus themselves examine this system and investigate its true meaning. As one step towards this, I propose here to examine the origins of the system and its intended application, as well as touching briefly on its latter-day social corruption. The caste system is, of course, generally thought of as that socio-cultural institution, currently prevalent throughout the sub-continent, on the basis of which society is divided up into various "castes", or groups, defined on the basis of birth, and given certain status on the grounds of the specific caste. Whilst this is indeed the nature of the caste system today, this is, as shall be seen in due course, not the true, original concept of the system as proposed by Hindutva. The origins of today's caste system are to be found in the "Varnashram Vyavastha", the ideal Hindu social model. There are two parts to this - firstly, there is the "Varna Vyavastha", and secondly there is the "Ashram Vyavastha". The former is the part that directly relates to caste, whilst the latter part deals with progressive stages of life, which, indirectly, has a bearing on the application of the Varna Vyavastha.

Extractions: Math 309 April 2001 The basis and inspiration for the whole of Indian mathematics is geometry. The beginnings of algebra can be traced to the constructional geometry of the Vedic priests preserved in the Sulbasutras , a manual of geometrical constructions from the 5 th to the 8 th centuries. Earlier remnants of geometrical knowledge of the Indus Valley Civilisation can be found in excavations at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro where there is evidence of circle-drawing instruments from as early as 2500 B.C.E. (Amma 1) Early geometry of the Sulbasutras was based on religious needs with regards to the construction of altars such as agnicitis, vedis, mandapas etc. that are required for sacrificial ritual (Kulkarni 19, Amma 3). The history of Indian geometry can be divided into three distinct periods: pre-Aryan, such as excavated in Indus Valley. Vedic or Sulbasutra post-Christian. Evidence of the pre-Aryan period includes well-planned towns and geometric designs including circles, squares and triangles. A link between this and the Vedic period can be found in the motif of a rectangle with the four sides curved inwards resembling a stretched hide; in the former period it can be seen as a decorative pattern while in the later period it is seen in the shape of the sacrificial altars or vedi . The vedi as well as the fireplaces or agni had such exact measurements and geometric shapes that they were codified and became the Sulbasutras . However, it is not known from how far back such knowledge originated as the sacrificial act is as old as the Vedas or older (Amma 5).

The declaration of the Sutras as "Vedic" or as belonging to the Vedas, particularly to the Atharvaveda, and his claim that "the Sutras (aphorisms) apply to and cover each and every part of each and every chapter of each and every branch of mathematics including arithmetic, algebra, geometry plane and solid, trigonometry - plane and spherical, conics - geometrical and analytical, astronomy, calculus - differential and integral etc., etc.", and that "there is no part of mathematics, pure or applied, which is beyond their jurisdiction" has raised a controversy amongst the mathematicians of India, some of whom have questioned the Vedicity of the Sutras on the ground of their language, and the level of mathematics it deals with. It is endeavoured here to deal with the problem in all possible aspects, and examine the validity or otherwise of the claim.

Extractions: DATE OF THE RIG VEDA The motivation for the British administrators in India to include the invasion theory in history books should be clear. Indians who descended from the Aryans should not complain against the British rule since they themselves are immigrants and hence they have no more right than the British to rule India. This theory has several major drawbacks. First of all arya in the Veda means a noble person, not the name of a tribe. RV 9.63.5 states "make all of us in the universe arya, noble". As observed earlier, the battles in the Rig Veda do not occur on earth, but in the atmosphere or the subtle planes; they are battles of the devas, the powers of Light versus the demons, the Dasyus, the powers of ignorance. To regard these battles as between two different human tribes, we have to eliminate ninety percent of the Rig Veda which contains detailed description of the devas as supraphysical forces of Light and those of Dasyus as the forces of ignorance. Now we will discuss the date of Rig Veda from all the available multidisciplinary evidence, some of which were collected in the last decade, some others known earlier.
