En 1856, les sièges de Sturm et Binet à l'Académie des Sciences furent attribués à MM. Joseph BERTRAND et Charles HERMITE . Tous deux nés en 1822, destinés à être unis un jour par des liens particulièrement intimes (Hermite a épousé Louise Bertrand, la soeur de Joseph Bertrand, et l'une de leurs deux filles épousa Emile Picard ), ils n'avaient attendu ni l'un ni l'autre leur sortie de l'Ecole Polytechnique pour se signaler à l'attention des géomètres. Même la première publication de M. Bertrand a vu le jour avant que l'âge de l'auteur eût permis de lui ouvrir les portes d'une Ecole où l'on savait depuis longtemps que sa place était marquée. C'était une Thèse sur la théorie mathématique de l'électricité. Elle lui valut le grade de docteur, et c'est avec ce titre que M. Bertrand fut admis en tête de la promotion de 1839 ; fait absolument unique dans les Annales polytechniciennes, et que, pour cette cause, il convenait de rappeler ici. En 1843, M. Bertrand publia deux mémoires sur la théorie des Surfaces isothermes orthogonales , où se manifestait, pour la première fois, l'emploi géométrique des infiniments petits dans la théorie des surfaces. Si depuis longtemps cet emploi était consacré pour les courbes, son application aux surfaces offrati de très grandes difficultés ; l'auteur était le premier à les avoir surmontées. Manifestó en varias ocasiones su oposición a la propuesta de Walras de que la Economía era una rama de la matemática aplicada. En 1883 publicó una crítica al libro Théorie mathématique de la richesse sociale de Walras en la que rechazaba el proceso de tâtonement argumentando que en la realidad se producen intercambios en situaciones de desequilibrio por lo que hay que considerar la existencia de indeterminación en los precios. También rechazó el principio de maximización de la utilidad con el argumento de que los comerciantes en realidad estaban interesados principalmente en los beneficios monetarios, no en la utilidad. En ese mismo artículo, revisó las teorías que Cournot había publicado en 1838. After the end of WW II, Rotblat founded the Atomic Scientists' Association, forerunner of the Pugwash movement. An edited transcript from an encounter in a television studio. A Christmas broadcast leading to a manifesto Pugwash Village: the venue for a new movement The Manifesto called on scientists to assemble in conference to discuss ways to avert the danger. Plans had already been laid to hold the Conference in India, where Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was very keen on a conference in New Delhi and had offered hospitality for it. Indeed letters of invitation had been sent out for the Conference to be held in December 1956 in New Delhi. However, two international events - the Suez crisis and the Hungarian uprising - made the political situation unstable, and Russell decided to cancel the meeting. After the situation calmed down, we resumed the plans for the Conference. The support from India was no longer available and we had to find other ways to cover the costs of the meeting.
