Soon after its publication, Briggs saw a copy of Napier's Logarithmorum canonis descriptio (1614), and from that point he devoted his life to the study of logarithms. One of Briggs's achievements was to change the logarithms of Napier into a form in which the logarithm of 1 is zero and that of 10 is 1, i.e. base-ten logarithms (Napier had used logarithms which were closer to hyperbolic logarithms, although they did not have the important property that the logarithm of 1 is zero). Briggs's work culminated in the present work, in which he tabulated thirty thousand base-ten logarithms, each to 14 decimal places, those of numbers from 1 to 20,000 and from 90,000 to 100,000. This book has been underestimated by many historians, who have regarded Briggs merely as the slave and drudge of his master, Napier. However, as Goldstine points out, Briggs is the true inventor of the calculus of finite differences, and the first discoverer of any case of the binomial theorem for a fractional exponent - one half - almost 50 years before the statement of the general binomial formula by Newton (normally said to be the first 'discoverer' of the binomial theorem) and the latter's work on finite differences. In fact, Briggs's method of computing logarithms was based on the repeated taking of square roots, making use of the binomial expansion. Whiteside points out the curious fact that the first use of a series approximation to find logarithms was not of the logarithm but of the square root.

BRIGG (properly GLANFORD BRIGGS or GLAMFORD BRIDGE), a market town in the North Lindsey or Brigg parliamentary division of Lincolnshire, England, situated on the river Ancholme, which affords water communication with the Humber. Pop. of urban district (1901) 3137. It is 23 m. by road north of Lincoln, and is served by the Grimsby line of the Great Central railway. Trade is principally agricultural. In 1885 a remarkable boat, assigned to early British workmanship, was unearthed near the river; it is hollowed out of the trunk of an oak, and measures 48 ft. 6 in. by about 5 ft. Other prehistoric relics have also been discovered. BRIGGS, CHARLES AUGUSTUS (1841- ), American Hebrew scholar and theologian, was born in New York City on the I5th of January 1841. He was educated at the university of Virginia (1857—1860), graduated at the Union Theological Seminary in 1863, and studied further at the university of Berlin. He was pastor of the Presbyterian church of Roselle, New Jersey, 1869—1874, and professor of Hebrew and cognate languages in Union Theological Seminary 1874—1891, and of Biblical theology there from 1891 to 1904, when he became professor of theological encyclopaedia and symbolics. From i88o to 1890 he was an editor of the Presbyterian Review. In 1892 he was tried for heresy by the presbytery of New York and acquitted. On this and subsequent visits the two men worked together to simplify Napier's original logarithms. It seems most probable that the idea of having a table of logarithms with 10 for their base was originally conceived by Briggs; the first such tables were published by him 1617, under the title Logarithmorum Chilias Prima, and were followed in 1624 by the Arithmetica Logarithmica, in which the tables were given to 14 significant figures.
