It was one of the first books on probability, and made an approximation to the normal or Gaussian distribution, which was incorporated into statistical studies for the next 200 years. De Moivre was the first to derive an exact formulation of how 'chances' and stable frequency are related. Analysing mortality statistics, De Moivre laid the mathematical foundations of the theory of annuities, for which he devised formulae based on a postulated law of mortality and constant rates of interest on money. First published 1725, his work became standard in textbooks of all subsequent commercial applications.

Extractions: De Moivre was born in France, but went to England to escape the persecutions which French Protestants were then suffering, and took his place at the northwest corner of the deeply interconnected world in which the science of statistics was emerging, one insight at a time. He supported himself by teaching, but most famously as the resident statistician of Slaughter's Coffee House in London, where the gamblers would pay him to calculate odds for them. Like his friend Isaac Newton, he studied the normal distribution curve, and saw that the normal curve was the limit to which the skew binomial curve approached (it is self-evident that it is the limit to which the symmetrial binomial curve approaches). He defined the mean and standard deviation for the binomial curve as np and r(npq), respectively. This result is now known to posterity as the de Moivre-Laplace Theorem. Extractions: Depois de passar cinco anos numa academia protestante em Sedan, Moivre estudou lógica em Saumur desde 1682 até 1684. Depois foi para Paris estudar no Collége de Harcourt. Protestante francês, Moivre teve de emigrar para a Inglaterra em 1685 devido à revogação parcial do Edicto de Nantes. Tornou-se professor particular de matemática e esperou por uma cadeira de matemática, mas não conseguiu, visto que os estrangeiros estavam em desvantagem. Em 1697 foi eleito membro da Royal Society. Moivre abriu caminho para o desenvolvimento da geometria analítica e a teoria das probabilidades. Publicou A Doutrina de Chance em 1718. A definição de independência estatística aparece neste livro junto com muitos problemas com dados e outros jogos. Investigou também estatísticas de mortalidade. Em Miscellanea Analytica (1730) aparece a fórmula de Stirling (injustamente atribuida a Stirling) que Moivre usou para derivar a curva normal como uma aproximação para a binomial. Na segunda edição do livro em 1738, Moivre dá crédito a Stirling por uma melhoria para a fórmula. Moivre é muitas vezes lembrado pelas suas fórmulas relacionadas com operações com números complexos na forma trigonométrica.
