Ohne abgeschlossener Grundschulausbildung ging er 1804 zu einem Buchbinder und Buchhändler in die Lehre. Zunächst trug er nur Zeitungen aus, später erlernte er das Buchbinderhandwerk. Im Jahr 1812 besuchte er Vorlesungen des Chemikers Sir Humphry Davy. Davy stellte Faraday daraufhin zunächst als Laborgehilfe und dann als Assistent in seinem chemischen Labor an der Royal Institution ein. Er kümmerte sich um die Vorträge der Gastdozenten und bereitete die Demonstrationsversuche vor. 1816 publizierte er seine erste wissenschftliche Arbeit über die chemische Analyse eines Ätzkalks und wurde 1821 zum Oberinspektor der Royal Institution befördet. 1823 befasste er sich mit der Verflüssigung von Chlor unter Druck und der Herstellung von Hexachlorethan.
