We zijn met recht trots op Buys Ballot: hij heeft er niet alleen voor gezorgd dat het KNMI er kwam, maar bracht ook de internationale samenwerking in de meteorologie op gang, introduceerde de weerkaart, het weerbericht en de stormwaarschuwingen, zorgde voor de oprichting van het meetnet en deed hier de eerste ozonwaarnemingen in het midden van de twintigste eeuw. Als onderzoeker was hij een man van de praktijk en zo kon hij uit waarnemingen het verband tussen luchtdruk en wind aantonen. Dat leidde tot de beroemde wet waarvan hij in 1857 het eerst melding maakte bij de Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen in Amsterdam. Iets soortgelijks speelde zich af tussen Doppler en Buys Ballot. De Oostenrijkse natuurkundige Johann Christian Doppler is bekend geworden door het naar hem genoemde effect. Hij beschreef in 1842 het principe dat een door een bron uitgezonden trilling anders wordt waargenomen als de bron zich ten opzichte van de waarnemer beweegt. Denk maar aan de toonverandering bij een passerende auto met sirene.
