First printings of two articles by Galton. The first is a fascinating statistical study of the changes in body weight of a group of noblemen. Galton states at the outset: "It is of considerable interest to know in an exact way the amount of change that may have occurred in our race during recent generations." In the second article, Galton speaks to what appears to be an advertisement for an optical instrument called an "identiscope," dismissing the claims made by the advertisement as unreliable, particularly in terms of the way the eye works. His interests in heredity and statistics led him to discoveries in statistics on the one hand, and to the dangerous idea of "improving" mankind on the other. It must be remembered, however, that eugenic ideas became a national policy in many countries and supported by many respectable persons, not only in Hitler's Germany, the worst example; and these ideas are still at issue in the contemorary world, overtly (in some countries) or covertly (in many other countries). Extractions: In a sense, Sir Francis Galton was a traditional Victorian gentlemen scientist who dabbled in a whole range of fields; yet Galton made an extraordinary impact on almost every area to which he turned his attention. Modern understandings in statistics, genetics, heredity and criminology were shaped by Galton's work. In his earlier years, prompted by expeditions to Africa and the Near East, Galton focussed on meteorology, travel, geography, and communications. He discovered the anti-cyclone, developed modern weather maps, was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Geographical Society, and wrote several books about his travelling experiences. Laterally, and in part prompted by the work of his cousin, Charles Darwin, Galton turned his attention to the study of heredity and identity. His research in these fields, which ultimately led to his coining the term "eugenics", also prompted his numerous discoveries and advances in the areas of statistics, photography, fingerprinting, and anthropometrics. Jan. 17, 1911, a cousin of Charles Darwin, made significant contributions to both genetics and psychology. An early proponent of statistical analysis as applied to mental and behavioral phenomena, he developed the correlation method in statistics. He was also an indefatigable explorer and an inquirer into human intelligence, and he made important contributions to the fields of meteorology, anthropometry, and physical anthropology as well. Galton, convinced that preeminence in various fields resulted principally from hereditary factors, was inclined to oppose those who stressed environmental determination of either intelligence or character. Interest in the role of heredity led him to introduce the method of twin studies to examine the different contributions of nature and nurture. He also inquired into racial differences and was one of the first to employ questionnaire and survey methods, which he used to investigate mental imagery in different groups. He is best known for his studies of heredity and intelligence, such as Hereditary Genius (1869), which led to the field he called eugenics He was the first to make a systematic enquiry into this matter. He took very seriously the question how far talent and physique were transmitted in families. By examining existing records of families he showed that quite often a child resembled a parent or other relative in possessing some striking ability. Remarkable instances were assembled of several closely related men attaining great eminence, for e.g the Bach family of musicians.. Galton realised that reputation, however, was an unsatisfactory foundation on which to base scientific inferences about hereditary traits and so he attemped, with considerable success, to use measurements. He found it possible to determine quantitatively the degree of likeness between relatives by means of the method of correlation. In this way the amount of hereditary transmission of a given character could be measured. A correlation coefficient of unity would imply perfect resemblance, whereas zero correlation would mean no likeness and, presumably, no hereditary influence. The most concrete results were obtained by studying similarities and variations of stature in familes. Several of his ideas are referred to in the works of his cousin, Charles Darwin. Galton was knighted in 1909.

Extractions: SIR FRANCIS GALTON (1822-1911) An English scientist, explorer and anthropologist, Francis Galton was a cousin of Charles Darwin and was one of the first to recognize how Darwin's theory of evolution was going to clash with theology. He coined the word eugenics to denote scientific endeavors to increase the proportion of persons with better than average genes. This was to be done through selective mating of marriage partners. Galton as a youth developed a passion for travel. He was taking medicine but when his father died he was left with sufficient fortune that he was free to indulge in his craving for travel. He wrote nine books and over 200 papers. They deal with many diverse subjects, including the use of fingerprints for personal identification, the correlation of calculus (a branch of applied statistics) - in both of which Galton was a pioneer - twins, blood transfusions, the art of travel in undeveloped countries, criminality and meteorology. He was also deeply concerned with improving standards of measurement. He was knighted in 1909 and died near London on January 17, 1911.

Extractions: An explorer and anthropologist, Francis Galton is known for his pioneering studies of human intelligence. He devoted the latter part of his life to eugenics, i.e. improving the physical and mental makeup of the human species by selected parenthood. Although weak in mathematics his ideas strongly influenced the development of statistics particularly his proof that a normal mixture of normal distributions is itself normal. Another of his major findings was reversion. This was his formulation of regression and its link to the bivariate normal distribution. He also made important contributions to the fields of meteorology, anthropometry, and physical anthropology. Galton was an indefatigable explorer and an investigator of human intelligence.
