Extractions: Henry Gellibrand entered Trinity College, Oxford in 1615 where he was introduced to mathematics by Savile . He received a B.A. from Trinity College in 1619 and an M.A. in 1623. He became a friend of Briggs while in Oxford. He entered the church becoming a curate in Chiddingstone, Kent a couple of years after receiving his M.A. from Oxford. Gellibrand succeeded Gunter to the chair of astronomy in Gresham College, London in 1627. It was largely through the influence of Briggs that he received this chair. Gellibrand's most famous scientific discovery was the change over the years in magnetic declination . He also made mathematical contributions to navigation, in particular working on methods to determine longitude. His methods were based on observing various celestial events and were published in Appendix concerning Longitude Gellibrand also published logarithm and trigonometrical tables. After his friend

Father Occupation: Physician Henry Gellibrand was a graduate of Oxford and for a time a fellow of All Souls. After 1602 he was a physician in Maidstone, Kent. The father died in 1615. I always assume that physicians were affluent at least. In fact the father left a considerable estate; our Henry was his sole heir. However, a reference below to Henry's small patrimony (which could have been in error, to be sure) leads me to list the family circumstances merely as affluent. It is surely relevant that Gellibrand entered Oxford as a commoner. 3. Nationality Birth: English Career: English Death: English 4. Education Schooling: Oxford, M.A. Oxford University, Trinity College, 1615-23. B.A., 1619. M.A., 1623. 5. Religion Affiliation: Calvinist Gellibrand was in holy orders; he held a curacy in Kent before 1623. In 1631, when he published an almanac with definite Puritan hues, Laud attempted to prosecute him. 6. Scientific Disciplines

Father Occupation: Unknown Thomas Smith, writing early in the 18th century, said that Briggs' parents were "humble of class and rather slender of means." Humble of class could mean too many things to guess, but I take the slender means to state unmistakably that they were poor. Smith indicates that Briggs could not have attended Cambridge without financial assistance from his college. 3. Nationality Birth: England Career: England Death: England 4. Education Schooling: Cambridge, M.A. Local grammar school. St. John's College, Cambridge, 1577-85; B.A., 1581; M.A., 1585. 5. However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newtonon whose physics he gave public lecturesas well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected booktwo on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin's own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject's work, 'digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived'. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term 'philosophy' broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.
Queenscliff : Street Names In 1855 HR henry had risen to command the HMS Arrogant . Hesse Street, The illfatedpartner of JT gellibrand, George Brook Legrew Hesse had been a barrister http://www.zades.com.au/bellhs/qustreet.html
Extractions: ABN : 32 278 055 160 The following history of street names is reproduced from the Investigator with the kind permission of W. J. (Bill) Morrow and the Geelong Historical Society . Note : please remember that the Investigator began more than 30 years ago, therefore some names and buildings have since disappeared into history. It is pleasing to note that most of the streets in Queenscliff proper carry the names of either the officers of the Rattlesnake which surveyed Port Phillip Bay in 1837, or well known pioneers of the Port Phillip District as the following list shows in many instances. Bay Street This name is self explanatory and shows lack of imagination. Surely there are one or two Queenscliff pioneers who still deserve recognition! Beach Street Same comment as for Bay Street! Bethune Street This street probably commemorates the name of Walter Angus Bethune (1794-1885), a merchant and settler in Van Diemen's Land from 1821. He was also a breeder of high class merino sheep at the time Port Phillip was settled and they were in great demand among the new settlers on the mainland. Bridge Street Originally Fish Street, where the Government is said to have provided land to accredited fishermen at £1 per year (probably when the railway interfered with the original sites). No doubt pressure from the residents caused a change in name.
Point Henry He arrived on the brig 'henry' in February, 1837, but does not seem to have takenup his allotted land after his two companions, gellibrand and Hesse, went http://www.zades.com.au/bellhs/phenry.html
Extractions: Timeline Point Henry in the 1990s Point Henry in the past Point Henry Arrivals Register Your Contribution ... Bibliography Point Henry today is a far cry from that of the last century. Situated 5 kms from the City of Greater Geelong, on a peninsula jutting out into Corio Bay, it is now mainly recognised as the site of Alcoa Australia's aluminium manufacturing plant. A long pier from the mainland serves ships bringing in the raw materials from which the aluminium is made. The only sealed road is the Point Henry Road which leaves the Portarlington Road at Moolap and travels between an area of light industries to the right and the saltpans of the former Cheetham solar saltworks to the left. [Photograph : Jenny Wright, Geelong] The saltpans and swampland area is now incorporated into a Wetlands project, a joint venture between Alcoa Australia and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The former signal station for the Geelong Harbour Trust is now used as the information centre for this project.
