He had several brothers: Alexander, William, James, and Andrew; also two sisters, Margaret married William Wedderburn, and Elizabeth, who died unmarried." The Dictionary of Canadian Biography contributes a great deal: "Little is known about John Black's early life, but the Blacks of Aberdeen were a well-established mercantile family which as early as 1745 had interests in the manufacture of linen and woollens and in other local interests such as herring-salting and lime burning. Black arrived at Saint John, N.B. in 1786 as an Admiralty agent, entrusted with the securing of masts and other choice timber, and as a representative of Blair and Glenie, a Scottish timber-trading firm that had moved its headquarters to London in order to tender for Admiralty contracts.

Clarks james Leroy Clark son of George Clark and Eliza Merrit. b. abt. 1851, Ontario. Shedied in 1896. Mr. Clark was married to Mrs. glenie Shoeburg in 1898. http://alum.wpi.edu/~skwirl/Clarks/clark.htm

Carrie , and George d. 18 A biographical sketch of John Clark that appeared in Compendium of History and Biography of North Dakota in 1900 stated that "his father, George Clark, was born in New York, and his people were from Vermont. He was a hotel keeper by occupation. The mother of our subject, who bore the maiden name of Eliza Merrit, was a daughter of a farmer, and her brothers all followed that occupation." The 1851 Census of Ekfrid Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, District 1, on 11 Jan 1852, showed a George Clarke, b. in USA, religion "E" (Church of England?), 23 years old, working as an innkeeper. Eliza, Samuel, and Baby [probably James Leroy] Clarke were all shown as being born in Upper Canada. Eliza was 26, Samuel was 5, and Baby was 1. Many George Clarks are shown in the 1871 census of Ontario. Two that seem likely are: George Clark, a 53-year-old male, b. in Ontario, Church of England by religion, Farmer by occupation, English in origin. He lived in Division 1 of Ekfrid (subdistrict C), in the district of Middlesex West (7), and his information appeared on page 3. Another George Clark was listed in Sidney, Hastings County, Ontario. (Census District 60). He was 49, born in the U.S., of English origin, and listed his occupation as Tavernkeeper. Sidney is a town in the southwest part of the county, north of the Bay of Quinte.

Kaye Lamb celebrated the achievement of some of Canadas founding bibliographers with the prediction that their work is never likely to be superseded (see Early Days: Personal Reflections on the Founding of the Bibliographical Society of Canada, National Library News vol. 28, no. 6, June, 1996, pp. 7-8). As one of the successors to Marie Tremaine, I heartily agree. When I first began to study printing in early Canada, the need to continue her research into the nineteenth century was clear. Searching for Ontario and Atlantic imprints, sometimes guided by her citations, I started to accumulate a file of unrecorded or unlocated eighteenth-century printing. Meanwhile, Marie Tremaines generous bequest to the Bibliographical Society at her death in 1984 called for a response. The Society established the Tremaine Fellowship in 1987 as one way of sharing her legacy with the scholarly community. Another would be to update and bring back into print her Bibliography of Canadian Imprints, 1751-1800

He graduated from Harvard University in 1770 and studied law with Jonathan Sewall. Chipman supported Britain during the American Revolution. In 1777, he acted as Deputy Muster-Master General in New York under Edward Winslow, who remained a great friend of his. When New York was evacuated in 1783, Chipman travelled to Britain; only a year later, he was appointed Solicitor-General for New Brunswick. P.A. Ryder commented that "(Chipman's) life mirrored that of the Province of New Brunswick from 1784 to 1824." Chipman played a part in many important events and was involved with some critical issues that arose in the province. Besides representing the Crown in border disputes with the United States and Nova Scotia and sitting in New Brunswick's first House of Assembly, Chipman also drew up the Charter for the city of Saint John. In 1806 he became a Legislative Councillor, and in 1809 he was made a puisne judge in the New Brunswick Supreme Court. Chipman's marriage to Elizabeth Hazen allied him with one of the oldest families in the province. Isabel Louise Hill stated that, "as long as he lived, suggestion of reform was considered an attack upon the constitution" (Hill, p. 160). His public life did not always run smoothly. Although he won a seat in the first House of Assembly, he never succeeded in winning a seat in future elections. After the 1795 election, he wrote a letter to the
