    Extractions: John Benjamin Hadley was born 24 December 1853 in Baldwin County, Alabama. He was the son of John Hadley (1820 - 1907) and Nellie Johnson (1819 - 1899). John married Sarah Cruit (03 August 1853 - 26 March 1939), who was the daughter of Gilbert and Louise Glasby Cruit. John and Sarah had four children: 1. John Cruit Hadley (11 February 1874 - 27 August 1909) John died in 1884 while racing horses. He was killed when the girth of his saddle broke during a race and he was thrown against a tree.     Extractions: Updated : 01-11-2002 T here are very few singers existing today that have the depth and individual character within their voice that enables the listener to immediately identify the artist. Tony Hadley, the former lead singer with Spandau Ballet is undoubtedly one of those singers. He is of course known firstly for his work during the 80's with the group that shot to fame, Spandau Ballet and also for his solo work both as a writer and singer throughout the 90's and into 2000. B ut, the history goes back a bit further than that. Tony was born at the Royal Free Maternity Hospital situated near the Angel in the heart of Islington, London, England. His first encounter with singing was at his primary school Clerkenwell Parochial where hymn singing every morning at assembly was the norm, under the ever watching eyes of Sister Edna and Sister Constance. In the latter part of his primary school though Tony was totally fascinated not with singing but biology and surgery (probably due to a serious bone marrow infection at the age of 10) and singing really wasn't the first thing on his mind although being a surgeon was. This was slowly going to change as hormones kicked in and his mum Jo and dad Pat bought him a tape recorder and along with his first ever album the 'World of David Bowie' it's been downhill ever since (sorry Tone, joke) J ust think what the NHS has missed out on. From this point on, music, ambition and Tony's continued development and interest in singing was to take over his life more and more;

    Extractions: The Hills The Man Patrick Hadley was born in Cambridge on 5 th March 1899. His father, William Sheldon Hadley was at that time a fellow of Pembroke College. His mother, Edith Jane, was the daughter of Rev. Robert Foster, Chaplain to the Royal Hibernian Military School in Dublin. Patrick studied initially at St Ronan's Preparatory School at West Worthing and then at Winchester College. However the First World War interrupted his education. He enlisted in the army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. He managed to survive unscathed until the last weeks of the war when he received an injury that resulted in his right leg being amputated below the knee. This had a profound effect on his confidence and also caused him to perhaps drink more than was wise; alcohol acted as relief for the considerable pain he was constantly in. Hadley's elder brother was himself killed in action during the Great War. After the War he went up to Pembroke College, Cambridge. He was fortunate to study with both Charles Wood and the undervalued English composer, Cyril Rootham. Hadley was awarded Mus. B in 1922, and an MA in 1925. He then went to the Royal College of Music in London. Here he came under the influence of Ralph Vaughan Williams for composition and Adrian Boult and Malcolm Sargent for conducting. Eric Weatherall notes that Hadley's contemporaries at the RCM included Constant Lambert and Gordon Jacob. He won the Sullivan prize for composition at that time the princely sum of 5/-.

In many ways 'The Hills' is a difficult piece to formally define. On the one hand it could be seen as a cantata or even an oratorio. Yet again it would be possible to view it as a tone poem. However, perhaps the best description would be a ‘choral symphony.’ The construction of the work lends itself to unity and completeness of design. There are effectively four movements - the first having a slow introduction. It is with considerable accuracy that this work has been compared to Ralph Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony -certainly on a general scale if not in detail. However, our musings on the 'form' of this piece are actually brought to a halt by the inscription on the published score that states - So perhaps the question was settled in Hadley's mind, if not for his subsequent listeners.
