Edmond's father, Edmond Sr., was by some accounts a soapboiler and a salter. Whatever his true profession was, though, he was a rich man, and eventually possessed land from which he extracted rent which allowed his family to live a relatively prosperous lifestyle. Halley attended the prestigious St. Paul's school, where in 1671, he was appointed captain; a position resembling today's student body president. He was an excellent student, and in 1673, attended Queen's College, Oxford. At this young age, Halley already possessed, "... the basic facts and computations not only of navigation but also those which the practical astronomer is concerned when he sets about the delicate task of measuring the positions of celestial bodies in the sky."(Ronan, pg. 6)

There is some confusion over both the date and year of Halley's birth. The confusion over the date is simply due to the change in calendar (29 October by the calendar of his time). The confusion over the year is less easy to decide, but we give 1656 which Halley himself claimed as the year of his birth. Halley's father last much in the great fire of London, which was in the year in which Halley was ten years old. " Edmond Halley was born in Hagerston, England on October 29, 1656. His mother died in 1672; his father was murdered in 1684. Edmond attended St. Paul's School in 1671 to 1673. Since he came from a wealthy family, he went to Oxford University, Queen's College, from 1673 to 1676. In college, Edmond made important observations, including an occulation, or the eclipse of one celestial body by the passing of another between it and the observer. On August 21, 1676, he saw the occultation of Mars by the Moon, which he published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society . It is a little unclear what else happened during Halley's undergraduate career, but he did give up his studies and sail to St. Helena in the southern hemisphere in November of 1676 . The weather in St. Helena proved worse for astronomical observations than Halley had hoped. Despite this, his eighteen month stay on the island resulted in his cataloguing 341 southern hemisphere stars and his discovery of a star cluster in Centaurus, "the peculiar radio galaxy which provides a striking example of how dust can affect our view of a galaxy, and how going to redder wavelengths helps penetrate interstellar dust." ( link to source ) Halley also produced the first accurate map of the stars visible form the Southern Hemisphere. He proved that stars have proper motion - that is, they change position in relation to each other. Halley studied the orbit of the moon and the effect of the moon on ocean tides. He also determined an accurate way to measure the distance of the sun from the earth. This measurement was needed for determining the size of the solar system and the distances of other stars form the earth.

Like the rock star, Edmond Halley is associated with a comet - Halleys Comet - but Edmond Halley was more. Edmond Halley was an able scientist/mathematician and began his career as a major astronomer by having a paper published on theoretical astronomy as a college student. This happened only twenty years after his birth on October 29, 1656 in Hagerston (near London) in England. All during Edmonds early life he was interested in science, especially astronomy. He said, from my tenderest youth I gave myself over to the consideration of Astronomy. He was intrigued with science which gave Halley so great a pleasure as is impossible to explain to anyone who has not experienced it Besides being known as a highly intelligent youth Edmond was named captain of his school, St. Paul, at age 15. He grew up as simply a normal boy with a sense of humor and a great charm of manner. Edmond continued his education at Queens College, Oxford at the age of 17. He was particularly taken notice of for the extraordinary advances he made at the same time in the Mathematics.
