Paul's father was a successful physician in Budapest who had the rather remarkable foresight to realise the problems that were going to befall Europe. So in 1924 Paul's father emigrated to Chicago in the United States, leaving Paul and his two elder brothers in Budapest. There they were looked after by the physician who took over his father's practice. After five years in Chicago, Paul's father became an American citizen and, at that time, brought Paul from Hungary to join him in Chicago. He attended high school in Chicago but rather remarkably he missed out four years schooling in the process. Halmos says that there was some confusion since in Hungary four years of primary schooling were followed by eight years of secondary schooling. He had completed seven of these twelve years but Halmos said ([1] or [2]):- I hinted to the school authorities that I had completed three years of secondary school, and I was believed. ... a year and a half later, at the age of fifteen, I graduated from high school.

In 1924 his father, a widower and successful physician, anticipated the political storm to come in Europe, and emigrated to America. While he was establishing a new practice in Chicago, he remarried and brought Paul's two older brothers to the United States. As soon as he became a naturalized citizen, he sent for thirteen-year-old Paul. "In view of my father's citizenship I became an instant American. I don't feel Hungarian. By culture, education, world view, and everything else I can think of I feel American. I speak English with an accent, but I speak it infinitely better than I speak Hungarian. In every respect, except accent, I am an American." Halmos finished his Ph.D. in 1938, typed 120 letters of application, and got two answers: both NO. It is situated on the bank of a small river Jargo which just few km. ahead ( north ) meets the holy river Ganga. My father is a farmer, and the land belonging to us is quite fertile as it comes in the belt of river Ganga. On the south side about 5 km ahead the great Vindhayachal mounatin range starts. I did my schooling from St. Thomas Primary and Junior High School in the nearest town Chunar (which is about two km. away from my village). Since that area was very backward and poor, so there was no further scope for studies after matriculation. I came to Allahabad and did my +2 from Jumna Christian College and my undergraduation from Ewing Christian College (A College of Allahabad University). After that I got enrolled in J.K. institute for M.Sc. (computer science) programme. But I did not find it as interesting as Mathematics. So I left it and joined M.Sc. (mathematics) in Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. Being interested in Mathematics I joined Ph. D. programme in Mehta Research Institute (now renamed as Harish-Chandra Research Institute ) here.
