    Extractions: Bill Casselman and Henryk Hecht The standard way of studying representations of reductive Lie groups is to study the corresponding category of Harish-Chandra modules. This method reduces the problem to an essentially algebraic problem. In my lecture at the last Congress, I discussed how this problem can be transferred to a problem in D-module theory, where powerful methods from algebraic geometry can be used. A feature of this approach, which is sometimes unpleasant, is that Harish-Chandra modules do not admit an action of the reductive Lie group G itself (in fact, they are modules for the action of the enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of the group G and the action of its maximal compact subgroup K). Casselman and Wallach defined a category of ``smooth representations of moderate growth and finite length'' of G and constructed a ``completion'' functor from the category of Harish-Chandra modules into this category. They also established that this functor is an equivalence of categories. Its quasi-inverse is the functor which attaches to each smooth representation the dense Harish-Chandra module of its K-finite vectors. Therefore, smooth representations are just ``Harish-Chandra modules in disguise'', but with an action of the group G itself.

    Extractions: A generalization of Harish-Chandra modules for Lie algebras. Classical Harish-Chandra modules appear from unitary representations of real complex semisimple groups. If G is a complex semisimple Lie algebra then a g-module M is a Harish-Chandra module if M is a direct sum of finite-dimensional modules over certain subalgebra k. This k in classical situation is the set of fixed point of a certain involution on g. One can consider a more general situation when k is an arbitrary subalgebra in g. The well studied case is the case when the corresponding group K acts with finitely many orbits on the flag manifold. Beilinson-Bernstein classification of such modules is obtained from localization theorem. The Bernstein-Beilinson localization theorem is a very powerful method of solving many

    Extractions: Representation theory of Lie groups has its roots in the work of Lie, Killing, Frobenius, and Cartan in the late nineteenth century. In the last 50 years it has been understood to deal with representations of groups such as real Lie groups, p -adic groups, finite Chevalley groups, as well as finite and infinite dimensional Lie algebras. By its nature it uses techniques from many fields: analysis, algebra, geometry, and algebraic geometry; and finds applications in areas such as harmonic analysis, combinatorics, number theory, and mathematical physics. This conference plans to cover a few of the areas that have seen recent development, and to put this progress in perspective. The importance of character theory for finite groups has been well known since the work of Frobenius. It generalizes to compact groups in the form of the Peter-Weyl theorem, and is given explicitly by the Weyl character formula. In the 1950s Harish-Chandra began a systematic study of harmonic analysis on reductive Lie groups. For this he developed the theory of infinite dimensional representations of a noncompact Lie group G . One of Harish-Chandra's seminal results is that the character of an irreducible admissible representation is a distribution given by a locally integrable function which is analytic on the regular set. This result was fundamental for Harish-Chandra's subsequent work, the culmination of which was his classification of the discrete series, i.e. the irreducible subspaces of
