    Extractions: In 1870 Harish Chandra moved his family to Calcutta so that his sons could have higher education. Here, Prafulla Chandra was admitted to the Hare School. He took a great interest in books and read a vast number of them. But a severe attack of dysentery forced him to leave the school. The disease was slowly overcome, but it permanently injured his health; he became a life-long sufferer from chronicindigestion and sleeplessness. In his later days he sometimes thought of this as a blessing in disguise. For the rest of his life he was very strict about his food; and he had regular exercises. Prafulla was now free from the tyranny of the dreary school routine; so he found time to satisfy his passion for the study of English and Bengali literatures. When barely ten years old, he learnt Latin and Greek (Languages of ancient Europe). He also studied the histories of Ehgland, Rome and Spain.

From his grand- father and father he inherited material prosperity, Vaishnava traditions and literary talents. Harish Chandra showed love for devotional music and aptitude for composing poetry even at the age of five. Today Bhartendu Harish Chandra is revered as the father of modern Hindi literature. His writings marked a transition from tradition to modernity. He brought old literature into focus and created a new one, rich and varied in content, wide in range, refreshing in style, and nationalistic, progressive and reformatory in tone. Among his literary works, dramas and love lyrics are most famous. His genius as a poet lay in bringing poetry from the royal courts to the common people and introducing realism into it. He travelled widely in northern India and learnt several other languages such as Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Marwari and Punjabi, which widened his intellectual horizon. He started a chain of journals such as Harish Chandra Chandrika, Kavivachan Sudha, Balabodhini Patrika and Bhagwadbhaktitoshini.

He learned the wash painting technique from Shri Bhawani Prasad Mittal, who learned it at Shanti Niketan. Together with Harish, Chandra Bal personally taught many of the artists presented on this website, such as Pieter Weltevrede Sandeep Johari Suresh Johari Sapna Johari , among many others. For most of his life, he taught painting in his own private school in Bareilly - India. The school is still being run by his son Prabhat Bal, who himself is also a very gifted artist of whom we will show work on this website soon. Master Chandra Bal left his body on the 15th of June 2002. This very short introduction awaits the creation of a much longer biography. We hope to add more paintings of the master to this website soon, but already here are a few :
