HARRINGTON, EARLS OF. The first earl of Harrington was the diplomatist and politician, William Stanhope (c. 1690— 1756), a younger son of John Stanhope of Elvaston, Derbyshire, and a brother of Charles Stanhope (1673—1760), an active The earl’s successor was his son, William (1719—1779), who entered the army, was wounded at Fontenoy and became a general in 1770. He was a member of parliament for about ten years and he died on the 1st of April 1779. This earl’s wife Caroline (1722—1784), daughter of Charles Fitzroy, 2nd duke of Grafton, was a noted beauty, but was also famous for her eccentricities. Their elder son, Charles(1753—I829),whobecame the 3rd earl, was a distinguished soldier. He served with the British army during the American War of Independence and attained the rank of gener:nl in 1802. From 1805 to 1812 he was commander-in-chief in Ireland; he was sent on diplomatic errands to Vienna and to Berlin, and he died at Brighton on the I5th of September 1829. Before the time of the first earl of Harrington the fitanhope family had held the barony of Stanhope of Harrington, which was created in 1605 in favour of Sir John Stanhope (c. 1550—1621) of Harrington, Northamptonshire. Sir John was a younger son of Sir Michael Stanhope (d. 1552) of Shelford, Nottinghamshire, who was a brothel’in-law of the protector Somerset. Sir Michael’s support of Somerset cost him his life, as he was beheaded on the 26th ofFebruary 1552. Sir John was treasurer of the chamber from 1596 to 1616 and was a member of parliament for several years. He died on the 9th of March 1621, and when his only son Charles, 2nd baron (c. 1595—I 675), died without issue in 1675 the barony became extinct.

It is also known as the cannonball packing, because it is commonly used for that purpose at war memorials. The oldest example I have seen is the pyramid of cannonballs from the 16th century that rests in front of the City Museum of Munich. Formulas for the number of cannonballs stacked in mounds have been known this long. In the 16th century, Sir Walter Raleigh gave his mathematical assistant, Thomas Harriot, the task of finding the formula. Harriot did this without difficulty. As Harriot grew in reputation as a scientist, spheres became a favorite topic of his. To him, atoms were spheres. To understand how they stack together is to understand nature. Numbers were spheres. In the tradition of Pythagoras, triangular numbers are stacked like billiard balls set in a triangle. Harriot draws Pascal's triangle, but with a sphere packing with that many spheres replacing each number. In 1606, Kepler complained that his recent book on optics was based entirely on theology. He turned for help to Harriot, who had been conducting experiments in optics for years. In fact, Harriot's knowledge of optics was so advanced that he had discovered Snell's law - 20 years before Snell and 40 years before Descartes. Harriot supplied Kepler with valuable data in optics, but he also tried to persuade Kepler that the deeper mysteries of optics would be unfolded through atomism. Unlike Kepler, Harriot was an ardent atomist, believing that the secrets of the universe were to be revealed through the patterns and packings of small, spherical atoms. Kepler was skeptical. Nature abhors a vacuum, and between the atoms lies the void.
