Extractions: MOLECULAR MODELING Chemists frequently use models to better understand chemical phenomena. In this laboratory models are used to analyze chemical bonding and molecular structure. We will start with the Lewis electron dot (Localized Electron) model and use it to predict the electronic structure of some simple molecules. We will then use ball-and-stick models to construct three-dimensional models of those molecules. The three-dimensional models will be refined using Gillespies Valence State Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) model . Finally, we will use Spartan , a computational chemistry program, to calculate the molecular geometry. The results from Spartan will then be compared with the VSEPR results. Computational chemistry In theory, all of chemistry can be understood as solutions of Schrödingers wave equation. In practice, solution of the Schrödinger equation is so complicated that chemically accurate calculations for molecules involving more than three electrons and three nuclei, e.g. H , are beyond the reach of current computer hardware/algorithms. To model the properties of larger (and more interesting) molecules, chemists must use some form of approximate computational method.

AIMPs and valence basis sets corresponding to valence spaces comprising the n s,( n - 1 )d, ( n - 1 )p, and ( n - 1 )s shells have been provided. The performance of the model potentials has been tested extensively in calculations on the diatomic oxides VO, NbO, TaO, NiO, PdO, and PtO, both at the Hartree-Fock level and when electron correlation is included by means of coupled-pair functional methods. Further we investigated the requirements on valence and intermediate basis sets used to represent the exchange and no-pair operators. Atomic properties obtained from AIMP Hartree-Fock calculations exhibit very good agreement with corresponding all-electron values. Excellent agreement between AIMP and all-electron results has been obtained at the Hartree-Fock and the correlated levels for equilibrium distances and vibrational frequencies. As expected, the explicit inclusion of the (n-1) s semi-core into the valence space turned out to be more important for early than for late transition metal (TM) monoxides. Relativistic operators are sufficiently well represented in the valence basis. Augmenting the resolution of the identity for the exchange operator, on the other hand, improves dissociation energies, in particular of early TM monoxides, bringing them into close agreement with the all-electron results. In this case it is possible to reduce the third-row TM f valence basis sets without loss of accuracy which implies considerable savings in computational resources. For the group 5 TM monoxides our results agree very well with experiment while for the group 10 TM monoxides inclusion of additional static and dynamic correlation effects and spin-orbit coupling seems to be indicated.

Extractions: Charlotte Froese Fischer Charlotte Froese Fischer obtained both a B.A. degree, with honors in Mathematics and Chemistry, and an M.A. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1952 and 1954, respectively. She then went to Cambridge University where she obtained a Ph. D. in applied mathematics and computing in 1957. There she worked with Douglas R. Hartree, programming the first Electronic Digital Stored program Automatic Computer (EDSAC) for atomic structure calculations. Dr. Fischer served on the Mathematics faculty of the University of British Columbia from 1957 - 68 where she introduced numerical analysis and computer courses into the curriculum and was instrumental in the formation of the Computer Science Department. She served as Professor of Applied Analysis and Computer Science at the University of Waterloo (1968 - 75), Professor of Computer Science at Pennsylvania State University (1974 - 79). She and her husband, Patrick C, Fischer, came to Vanderbilt University in 1980. Dr. Fischer spent 1963 - 64 at the Harvard College Observatory, extending her research on atomic structure calculations. While at Harvard, she was the first woman scientist to be awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. Since then she has become internationally known for her software for atomic structure calculations and her research in atomic structure theory. In 1991 she became a Fellow of the American Physical Society, in part for her contribution to the discovery of negative calcium. In 1995 she was elected a member of the Royal Physiographical Society of Lund.

Bowles Publication Data: Annals of the History of Computing vol. 18, no. 4, 1996. Abstract This article is a comparative analysis of the British and U.S. differential analyzers from 1930 to 1945. The author examines the development of the Vannevar Bush and D.R. Hartree analyzers in the context of the U.S. engineering community and British scientific community, respectively. He argues that this practical machine was more readily and enthusiastically adopted by U.S. engineers, while British scientists remained septical of the differential analyser due to their theoretical professional style. As a result, Hartree was a "voice in the wilderness" in Britain, while Bush received extensive funding and had the support of an enthusiastic engineering environment. Introduction Kenneth Flamm claimed that the tradition-bound British culture was one of the main reasons why the British were unable to compete successfully against the U.S. computer initiative in the post-World War II era. British culture did not have the same support for risky high-technological ventures as did its U.S. counterpart. Flamm contends that while less visible, this cultural factor was a more important obstable than a lack of funding. While Flamm used this argument for hte post-World War II era, I contend that this cultural factor had implications for the analog machines in the 1930s and 1940s.
