Page 519. quote.. ...end quote The Poynting theorem actually is a relationship between the divergence (div S) of the Poynting vector flux S and the sources of energy at a point. For a region containing no sources or sinks of energy, the Poynting theorem merely states that div S = 0, and therefore by the divergence theorem, that the integral of the normal component of S over a closed surface surrounding a region containing no sources or sinks of energy must also be zero. There is, as Sir James points out, no reason at all to identify S with a local flow of energy. His remarks about "circulation" merely say that if div S = then S, if it exists, (that is to say, it is not zero everywhere) must be the curl of another vector (say T), since if S = curl T then div S is then identically zero by the well known vector identity div (curl[a vector field]) = 0. Thus we can envisage a region containing a Poynting flux S where there is no power flow, provided S = curl T. D.Jefferies

Jeans went to Trinity College Cambridge in 1896 and fellow student G H Hardy was in the same year. Jeans was taught as an undergraduate at Cambridge by J W L Glaisher , W W Rouse Ball , A N Whitehead , R A Herman and E T Whittaker . Both Jeans and Hardy were awarded a Smith's prize in 1901 with unspecified relative merit. That year Jeans became a Fellow of Trinity. Jeans lectured at Princeton from 1905 until 1909. During this period, in 1907, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1909 Jeans returned to England and the following year he was appointed Stokes Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at Cambridge. He only held this post until 1912 when he retired to Guildford to devote himself to mathematical research. During his career he taught in Cambridge, England and Princeton, USA and undertook research at the Mt Wilson Observatory, Pasadena, California.

The tiniest ripple in the air sets them into motion; under favorable conditions a sound-wave of such feeble intensity that the air is displaced only through a ten-thousand-millionth part of an inch will send an audible sound to the brain. The change of pressure produced by such a sound-wave is less than a ten-thousand-millionth part of the whole pressure of the atmosphere, so that the human ear is incomparable more sensitive than any barometer which has ever been constructed. The ordinary barometer will record the lowering of atmospheric pressure which we experience as we walk upstairs in our house, or climb a few feet up the mountainside, but the change of pressure just mentioned is that produced by an ascent of only a 30,000th of an inch. Extractions: ARTICLES What are Physics and Philosophy? - by Sir James Jeans - SCIENCE USUALLY advances by a succession of small steps, through a fog in which even the most keen-sighted explorer can seldom see more than a few paces ahead. Occasionally the fog lifts, an eminence is gained, and a wider stretch of territory can be surveyed - sometimes with startling results. A whole science may then seem to undergo a kaleidoscopic rearrangement, fragments of knowledge being found to fit together in a hitherto unsuspected manner. Sometimes the shock of readjustment may spread to other sciences; sometimes it may divert the whole current of human thought. Events of this last kind are rare, but instances come readily to mind. We are likely to think first of the results of replacing the geocentric astronomy of mediaeval times by the Copernican system -man saw that his home was not the majestic fixed centre of the universe round which all else had to revolve, but one of many fragments of matter which were themselves revolving round a very ordinary one of the myriads of stars in the sky. Or we may think of the implications of the Darwinian biology-man saw that his body had not been specially designed for himself, the lord of creation, but was an adaptation and development of the bodies of animals which had preceded him on earth, and were in fact his own ancestry; all terrestrial creatures, even the meanest, proved to be his blood relations, and if he had dominion over them it was only because he happened to have been born into the clever branch of the big family.

Für uns sind die allgemeinen Glaubensinhalte körpereigenes "Wissen", also unumstößliche Realität: die Materie unseres Körpers verändert sich dabei.
