The War of the Worlds (1898), whose opening lines retain their haunting power to this day and reveal the strange blend of hope and fear that humans feel when considering the possibility of life elsewhere, a kind of elated paranoia.

    Extractions: Sir James Jeans Sir James Jeans, noted British scientist, has given a physical analysis of musical sounds, in what is considered to be the best exposition on the subject, a book of great intellectual stature. His aim has been to convey precise information, in a simple non-technical way, that will be of interest to the amateur as well as the serious student of music. The discussion begins with an explanation of the development of the human faculty of hearing. It is established that each sound can be represented by a curve. An examination of the general properties of sound-curves follows. For example, why do some sounds produce pleasure when they reach our ears and some pain? How do we retain the pleasurable qualities in the sound-curve, as it passes on from one stage of electronic equipment to another? To what extent is it possible to prevent unpleasant qualities from contaminating the curve? These and other pertinent questions on the transmission and reproduction of sound-curves are answered in a discussion of tuning-forks and pure tones. The various methods of producing sound, and the qualities of the sounds produced, are further discussed as they relate to vibrations of strings and harmonics, and vibrations of air. Harmony and discord are also considered. In the final chapters on the concert room and hearing, the discussion focuses on the transmission of sound from its source to the eardrum and from the eardrum to the brain. A general theory of acoustics is also covered as well as acoustical analyses.

Blavatsky brought theosophy to the West she severely criticized the materialistic limitations of the leading scientists, and offered a more philosophic scheme of nature. Her teachings seemed to them so unusual and unconventional that they were generally ignored; science was busy liberating Western thought from ecclesiastical fetters, and anything that savored of spiritual ideals was not favored by it. Today we see a change. A large number, perhaps a majority, of her fundamental teachings in physics are either fully accepted by leading thinkers or are matters of serious discussion and research. This transformation was foreseen by her, as she stated that the secret doctrine of the ages sketched by her in the book of that name would begin to be recognized in the twentieth century. And although science has not yet become spiritualized, extraordinary developments leading away from mechanistic interpretations have already taken place. It is to be regretted, however, that while science is getting free from crass materialism, it still maintains that human beings are merely higher, perishable animals, so far as it has ascertained. The survival of man after death the spirit, soul, the passional elements or what not reincarnation, even the existence of a soul, are not subjects of serious discussion at scientific congresses. They are set aside with ghosts and religious superstitions as curious specimens of folklore, if mentioned at all. This has all to be changed before real progress can be made.

TONE In 1937, Cambridge University Press published a book, by the noted physicist, Sir James Jeans, in which he presented in lay terms the known mathematical and physical foundations of music. Among other things, he denied the claim of the pianist that the quality of sound can be affected by the way the key is depressed. "In reply, the untemperamental scientist points out that, in striking a single note, the pianist has only one variable at his disposal - the force with which he strikes the key; this determines the velocity with which the hammer hits the wires and once this is settled all the rest follows automatically." (p.98) "To put the matter beyond doubt, three American scientists, Hart, Fuller and Lusby, have recently made records of the sound curves of single notes played by well-known virtuosi, and also of the same note played by letting a weight fall on the keys. Two pairs of such curves are shewn in Plate IV. In each case the upper curve records the note played by the professional, the lower curve that played by the falling weight. No visible difference can be detected." (p.99) Because of the widespread readership of the book and the prestige of Sir James, this conclusion appears to have been accepted as gospel by physicists and others, - even a few musicians, including Paderewski, - up to the present day.
