Extractions: When only 25 when Gaston Julia published his 199 page masterpiece which made him famous in the mathematics centres of his days. As a soldier in the First World War, Julia had been severely wounded in an attack on the French front designed to celebrate the Kaiser's birthday. Many on both sides were wounded including Julia who lost his nose and had to wear a leather strap across his face for the rest of his life. Between several painful operations he carried on his mathematical researches in hospital. Later he became a distinguished professor at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. In 1918 Julia published a beautiful paper (1918), 47-245, concerning the iteration of a rational function f . Julia gave a precise description of the set J(f) of those z in C for which the n th iterate f n z ) stays bounded as n Seminars were organised in Berlin in 1925 to study his work and participants included Brauer Hopf and Reidemeister . While in the hospital, Julia carried on mathematical research and wrote several outstanding papers. Within his most famous paper "Memoir sur l'iteration des fonctions rationnelles," Julia discussed the iteration of a function, according to a precise description whose n th iterate stays bounded as n tends to infinity. For this paper, Julia was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Academie des Sciences. Soon after this award, Julia's fame was diminished, and his theories were more or less forgotten until Benoit Mandelbrot cited his work in the 1970's. LAWRENCE The University of Kansas has named 21 sophomores as University Scholars for the 2002-03 academic year. The University Scholars Program gives promising undergraduates experiences that provide intellectual challenge and enhanced academic opportunities. The students were selected on the basis of academic records, commitment to education, intellectual promise, and evaluations by instructors, advisers and other faculty members. Students with a 3.8 cumulative grade-point average are invited to apply. They must maintain at least a 3.5 average to stay in the program. Each student works with a faculty mentor who encourages intellectual development. The scholar-mentor relationship is expected to continue throughout the student's undergraduate career. Students must enroll in the University Scholars seminar, which acquaints them with university issues and allows them to integrate knowledge from fields of study outside their own. Bill Tuttle, professor of American studies, will lead the seminar during the spring semester. The program is funded by the KU Endowment Association and is administered by the University Scholars steering committee. The committee chair is Barbara Schowen, director of the University Honors Program.
