Extractions: Born in Belfast, Thomson came to Glasgow at the age of six after the death of his Scottish mother and when his father became Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow . He was taught by his father (he never went to school) and entered University at the age of 10 (and is in the Guiness Book of Records for that feat). By the age of 22 he had been to Cambridge and Paris Universities and was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University. He developed the science of thermodynamics, developed the second law of thermodynamics and formulated the "Kelvin" scale of absolute temperature. He invented the mirror galvanometer, a telegraph message receiver and supervised the laying of the first trans-Atlantic insulated electric telegraph cable which revolutionised world communications. He invented an electric strain gauge, an improved ship's compass, the Kelvin ampere balance and an electrostatic voltmeter amongst a host of other developments. Kelvin published 660 scientific papers, the first at age 16. But he was not just an academic scientist - he was a champion rower and founded the Glasgow University Music Society. He was knighted in 1866 for his contribution to telegraphy and created Baron Kelvin of Largs 1892. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

Extractions: ~ Lord Kelvin ~ William Thomson was born in Belfast, Ireland, the second son of four children. His mother died when he was six, and he moved with the family to Glasgow when his father, James Thomson, became professor of mathematics at the University (1834). He was an infant prodigy in mathematics, taught by his father until, at age 11, he entered the University of Glasgow in 1841. Guided by his father's interest in his education, Thomson went to Cambridge University in 1845 and postgraduate work in Paris with Regnault, including study of science demonstration techniques. Throughout his education, Thomson demonstrated excellence and published scholarly papers on mathematics, the first when he was 16. When he became Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow university in 1846, he held the position for half a century. He created the first physics laboratory at a British University. In the same year, he estimated the age of the earth, based on creation at the temperature of the sun, and calculating the rate of cooling for a body of the size of the earth. His estimate of around 100 million years, though, was made without knowledge of the heating effect of the radioactivity in the earth's core. He stubbornly defended this calculation throughout his life, and contested Darwin's conclusions on evolution as impossible in the time period.

Extractions: Langdon St. Ives clashes again with Dr. Narbondo, who has murdered the gentleman-scientist's wife and is threatening to use volcanoes to push the earth slightly closer to the path of an approaching comet. This means that the earth's magnetic fields will attract the comet's iron core, thus making collision and the destruction of life on earth certain. The Royal Academy intend to counter this threat by reversing the planet's magnetic poles; this, they believe, will cause a brief period wherein the earth will have no electromagnetic field at all, thus allowing the comet to sail safely by. The great Lord Kelvin is at work on a device to effect this. St. Ives, meanwhile, is convinced that the Academy's plan will irradiate the earth. He has some save-the-world ideas involving volcanoes (and the hollow-earth theory) himself. This is only the beginning, though. Lord Kelvin's machine has other uses, as a time machine, for instance, and there is unfinished business between St. Ives and the possibly-late Dr. Narbondo.

Nasce a Belfast da una famiglia scozzese, rimane orfano di madre a soli 6 anni, e l'educazione giovanile gli viene impartita dal padre, professore di matematica, sino a quando, a 17 anni, entra al St.Peters College di Cambridge, brillando sia in fisica e matematica che in quasi tutti gli sport. Nel 1842, a 22 anni, è professore di filosofia naturale a Glasgow, dove trova un ambiente di giovani fisici e matematici di avanguardia, e, dal 1847, collabora con J.P.Joule , celebre fisico, autore della teoria dinamica del calore e che, nel 1844, scopre come il calore generato in un circuito elettrico sia pari alla resistenza totale del circuito stesso moltiplicata per il quadrato della corrente che lo percorre (legge di Joule).
