HP Science Lectures 2000 - John Kingman HewlettPackard Science Lectures 2000 Sir john kingman. Abstract, biographyand related links. Are Universities Obsolete? Sir john kingman. Abstract. http://www.hpl.hp.co.uk/brims/hplms/kingman_abstract.htm
Extractions: Sir John Kingman The new century will see lifelong learning as part of a global entertainment industry, complemented by corporate education programmes of multinational companies. It will see a vast expansion of research carried out by these companies, in facilities much larger and more sophisticated than those which universities can sustain. What place will there be for universities as seats of education and research? Will they go virtual, and effectively franchise their brand names? Will they form strategic alliances, and become the educational arms of great companies? Or is there a place in the new world for the university in something like its present form? Biography Sir John Kingman has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol since 1985. A Cambridge graduate, he taught mathematics and statistics there and at the University of Sussex before becoming Professor of Mathematics at Oxford in 1969. In 1981 he became Chairman of the Science and Engineering Research Council, for which he was knighted in 1985. Sir John's research has been in probability theory and its applications, notably in OR and population genetics. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1971, and has been President both of the Royal Statistical Society and of the London Mathematical Society. He has been a non-executive director of IBM (UK) Holdings Ltd., of SmithKline Beecham plc and of the British Technology Group, and is at present Deputy Chairman of Bristol United Press plc. He chaired the committee that produced the Kingman Report' on English teaching in 1988.
