Kirchhoff war an den Universitäten Breslau, Heidelberg und Berlin Professor für Physik. Er entwickelte gemeinsam mit dem deutschen Chemiker Robert Wilhelm Bunsen das moderne Spektroskop für die chemische Analyse. 1860 entdeckten die beiden Wissenschaftler die Elemente Cäsium und Rubidium unter Zuhilfenahme der Spektroskopie. Kirchhoff führte auch Untersuchungen zur Strahlungswärmeübertragung durch und postulierte zwei Gesetze, die man heute unter dem Namen Kirchhoffsche Gesetze kennt. Sie betreffen die Stromverzweigung in elektrischen Stromkreisen. Um 1845 leitete der Physiker Gustav Robert Kirchhoff aus dem Ohm 'schen Gesetz die allgemeinen Regeln für die Strom- und Spannungsverteilung in beliebigen Stromkreisen ab. Aus dieser Arbeit gingen u.a. die beiden Kirchhoff'schen Regeln hervor. Der folgende Textausschnitt ist eine darauf aufbauende Arbeit von 1849. Kirchhoff erläuterte hier die Zusammenhänge zwischen der Elektrostatik und so genannten stationären (zeitunabhängigen) Strömen. Eine Gedankenstütze ist u.a. die Gleichsetzung von elektrischer Spannung und elektrostatischer Potentialdifferenz: Die Spannung zwischen zwei Punkten eines Stromkreises ergibt sich als Differenz der Potentiale in diesen Punkten. Kirchhoff's laws, announced in 1854, allow calculation of currents, voltages and resistances of electrical circuits extending the work of Ohm. His work on black body radiation was fundamental in the development of quantum theory. His work on spectrum analysis led on to a study of the composition of light from the Sun. Kirchhoff was the first to explain the dark lines in the Sun's spectrum as caused by absorption of particular wavelengths as the light passes through a gas. This started a new era in astronomy. In 1875 he was appointed to the chair of mathematical physics at Berlin. Disability meant he had to spend much of his life on crutches or in a wheelchair. Kirchhoff v roce 1859 dokázal zákon o vztahu mezi emisí a absorbcí svìtla. Spolu s Bunsenem rozvinuli metodu spektrální analýzy. Touto metodou se poznalo složení hvìzd. Kirchhoff dále definoval pojem èerného tìlesa a ukázal principiální význam úlohy urèit jeho spektrum. Pøi studiu tepelného záøení Kirchhoff zjistil, že v každé dutinì obklopené stejnì teplými tìlesy vznikne univerzální záøení (záøení èerného tìlesa) závislé jen na teplotì stìn, ne však na jejich druhu, a že na toto dutinové záøení lze vztáhnout intenzitu vyzaøování jakéhokoliv tìlesa, jsou-li známy jeho absorpce a index lomu. Roku 1874 vydává Kirchhoff Pøednášky o mechanice . Dílo zaèíná vìtou: Mechanika je vìda o pohybu, úkolem této vìdy je popsat pohyby, k nimž dochází v pøírodì, úplnì a co nejjednodušším zpùsobem.

    Extractions: Am 12. März 1824 wurde der Physiker Gustav Robert Kirchhoff im preußischen Königsberg geboren und starb am 17.Oktober 1887 in Berlin, im Alter von 63 Jahren. Kirchhoff machte eine Lehre bei C. F. Gauß. 1845 stellte er als Student, allgemeiner als Ohm, die Gesetze der Stromverzweigung auf. Diese Gesetze beschreiben das Gleichgewicht in Netzwerken linearer elektrischer Leiter. 1850-1854 führte er eine Professorenstelle in Breslau aus und war ab 1854 Professor in Heidelberg. Dort führte er zusammen mit R. W. Bunsen Untersuchungen zur Emission und Absorption des Lichtes durch. Diese Untersuchungen stellen die Grundlage der Spektralanalyse dar und führten 1859 zur Aufstellunng der kirchhoffschen Strahlengesetze. Durch die Spektralanalyse entdeckte er die chemischen Elemente Cäsium und Rubidium.
