    Extractions: Nacido en el seno de una familia campesina, recibe educación superior en la Universidad de Caen, en 1765. Ejerce la docencia en la Escuela Militar de París y en 1785 es nombrado miembro de la Academia de Ciencia, para serlo a partir de 1816 de la Francesa. Fue nombrado ministro por Napoleón , a quien dio clases, cargo que desempeñará durante un corto periodo. Eminente científico, formula las leyes del electromagnetismo y realiza grandes aportaciones al cálculo de probabilidades ("Teoría analítica de probabilidades", 1812). En el campo de la mecánica celeste formula la teoría acerca de un origen del cosmos a partir de una nebulosa incandescente ("Exposición del sistema del mundo", 1796). Los movimientos orbitales los estudia en sus cinco tomos de "Mecánica celeste", publicados entre 1795 y 1825, donde determina que la existencia de anomalías o irregularidades forman parte del sistema y que se compensan entre sí, dando lugar a un cosmos ordenado y estable. Igualmente piensa que, a pesar de la existencia de estas irregularidades, la posibilidad de un colapso del sistema del universo es muy improbable. Por último, cree en un determinismo mecánico como principio rector del universo, sin duda influenciado por su ateismo. Falleció en París el 5 de marzo de 1827.

Noch im gleichen Jahrhundert stellte der brillante englische Physiker Isaac Newton Galileis neue Wissenschaft auf ein mathematisches Fundament. Seine "Principia Mathematica" zählen unbestritten zu den größten wissenschaftlichen Leistungen aller Zeiten. Laplace traf einmal mit Napoleon zusammen und erklärt ihm seine Himmelsmechanik. Napoleon hört zu und fragte: "Wo ist denn Gott in Ihrem Weltbild?" Laplace antwortete ungerührt: "Diese Hypothese, Sire, benötige ich nicht." Die Erfolge bei der Berechenbarkeit der Planetenbahnen verleiteten Laplace eines Tages zu der Hypothese, daß, wenn alle Zustände eines komplizierten Systems bekannt wären, man die Zukunft des Systems beliebig voraussagen könnte. Heute wissen wir, daß Laplace in diesem Punkt irrte.

He studied the motion of the Moon and planets, and published a five-volume survey of celestial mechanics Trait de mchanique cleste (17991825). Among his mathematical achievements was the development of probability theory. Und in den mit der Revolution beginnenden politischen Wirren war ihm die Erhaltung seines Einflusses offensichtlich wichtiger als eine klare politische Linie; er verstand es, sich mit den jeweiligen Machthabern zu arrangieren, auch dies ein Umstand, der ihn die Achtung vieler Kollegen kostete. Napoléon ernannte ihn 1799 zum Innenminister, entfernte ihn jedoch bald wieder aus diesem Amt, "weil er den Geist des Unendlich Kleinen in die Regierung hineintrug"; von Louis XVIII wurde er zum Marquis gemacht.
