    Extractions: Back to Main Page The Life of Colin Maclaurin Colin Maclaurin was a Scottish mathematician who lived from 1698 to 1746. He was born in February 1698 in Kilmodan, Glendaruel, Argyllshire, where his father was the minister of the Kilmodan church. Maclaurin's father died shortly after his birth. Maclaurin's uncle, also a minister, took charge of Colin and his brother, John, after the death of their mother in 1707. Maclaurin entered the University of Glasgow at the age of 11. It was not unusual for university students to be of such young age in the 18th century. At the University, Maclaurin was inspired by a classmate's copy of Euclid's Elements. Maclaurin was awarded a Master of Arts degree (the equivalent of a modern Bachelor's Degree) at the age of 14. Perhaps inspired by his father and uncle, Maclaurin remained at the University as a student of divinity. He decided against a career in the Presbyterian Church and accepted the position of Professor of Mathematics at the Marischal College in the University of Aberdeen in 1717 at the age of 19.

    Extractions: When the citizens of Edinburgh hastily threw up barricades and dug ditches to defend their city against the approaching Jacobite forces in 1745, one of the leaders was famed mathematician Colin MacLaurin, who had been born in Kilmodan, Argyllshire. MacLaurin, a close friend and defender of Isaac Newton, the brilliant English scientist, helped develop and extend the latter's work in calculus, geometry and gravitation. A boy prodigy, MacLaurin was admitted to the University of Glasgow at age 11. At 19, he became a professor of mathematics (at Aberdeen) and two years later was admitted to the Royal Society of London. His most important work was Organic Geometry, with the Description of the Universal Linear Curves, published in 1720, in which he developed several theories similar to those in Newton's Principia. MacLaurin's active, inquiring mind can be discerned in his many books, including Account of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophical Discoveries; Treatise of Algebra and A Tract on the General Properties of Geometrical Lines.

The following year he was elected professoi of mathematics in the university of Edinburgh on the urgent recommendation of Newton. After the death of Newton, ir 1728, his nephew, John Conduitt, applied to Maclaurin for hi~ assistance in publishing an. account of Newton’s life and discoveries. This Maclaurin gladly undertook, but the death oi Conduitt put a stop to the project. In 1740 Maclaurin divided with Leonhard Euler and Danie Bernoulli the prize offered by the French Academy of Sciences for an essay on tides. His Treatise on Fluxions was publishe at Edinburgh in 1742, in two volumes.
