Extractions: Né en Silésie en 1927, Kurt Masur étudie le piano, la composition et la direction d'orchestre au Conservatoire de Leipzig. En 1948, il est nommé à la tête du Halle County Theater, puis il devient directeur musical des Opéras d'Erfurt et de Leipzig. De 1955 à 1958, il est chef de l'Orchestre philharmonique de Dresde, puis directeur général de la musique à Schwerin, directeur de la musique au Komische Oper de Berlin (1960-1964), chef principal de l'Orchestre philharmonique de Dresde (1967-1972), avant de devenir directeur musical du Gewandhaus de Leipzig de 1970 à 1996, période pendant laquelle il dirige près de mille concerts à Leipzig et plus neuf cents en tournée. Depuis 1991, Kurt Masur est directeur musical de l'Orchestre philharmonique de New York ; il occupera ce poste jusqu'à la fin de la saison 2001-2002. Sa personnalité a fortement marqué cet orchestre qui, au cours du siècle, a pu bénéficier d'influences aussi riches que celles de Gustav Mahler, Arturo Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez ou encore Zubin Mehta. Sous sa direction, le Philharmonique de New York a lancé avec succès des projets tels que le retour à des émissions de radio en direct sur toute l'étendue du territoire des Etats-Unis et la création de son propre label discographique « New York Philharmonic Special Editions ». Il a accru le nombre de créations données par l'Orchestre et élargi sa participation à toutes les musiques, du jazz aux musiques de films.

Extractions: The Courier-Journal What is it about Mahler that sends would-be recitalists into such a tizzy? They don't react that way to songs by Richard Strauss or Hugo Wolf, but suggest a program devoted to lieder and get ready for the protests: too folksy, too arcane, too compromised with piano accompaniment instead of a giant symphony orchestra, and on and on and on. All this is why listeners should be grateful to baritone Kurt Ollmann and pianist Jeffry Peterson. These musicians who could have easily run the other way performed Mahler and nothing but Mahler yesterday at the University of Louisville School of Music. The program was a brave idea of the Louisville Chamber Music Society's Acton Ostling Jr., and it succeeded handsomely. Because Mahler wrote songs throughout his career, pouring a remarkable contrast of expression into his settings, Ollmann and Peterson had plenty of options. With a little gentle prodding from Ostling, they settled on groupings that illuminated prime aspects of the composer's development. The sequence of material provided enough to chew over, and linger over, without ever seeming out of balance. Even after an entire recital of Mahler, a listener wanted to seek out more of this repertoire.

Any ideas. Doug Dear Sir, The recording you are looking for can be obtained from Berlin Classics (division of Edel Classics GmbH), and it bears the number 0094422BC. You probably know this already, but this is a recording that is more than worthwhile the effort to get hold of it. Sound (analogue, but good for its time (1979)) and interpretation are very good to my taste. Very involved playing and conducting. The sound is nicely full and the recording is direct. (At the beginning of the final movement, there is a little glitch in the rising tuba motif, but this does not disturb my listening pleasure much). So, by any means, do try to obtain this recording! Hoping to have been of any help to you
