He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he lived from to . In he was appointed Master of the Royal Mint, and moved to London, where he resided until his death. Beginning in he served on the government's Board of Longitude. Newton died in London on 20 March 1727 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, the first scientist to be accorded this honor. Mathematics: Newton invented integral calculus, and simultaneously with Leibniz, differential calculus. Physics: He defined universal laws of motion and gravitation, and made numerous advances in the principals of reflection and refraction. Astronomy: combining his work in mathematics, statics, and optics, he was able to predict the motions of bodies in the heavens, and build a practical reflecting telescope to see them. His improvements to instrumentation also extended to a better sextant, and an enormous composite burning glass. Chemistry: He derived a precursor to the famous Laplacian formula for finding the velocity of sound in a gas, and he experimented with metal alloys for better telescope reflectors. His metallurgical efforts may have elided with a private interest in alchemy. It should be placed first in the great trilogy of Newton's major works: Fluxions, Principia (1687), and Opticks (1704), which together represent the full working out of his three major contributions to science. The first page of the manuscript (preserved in Cambridge University Library) is lost and the title De Methodus Fluxionum was supplied by John Colson when he first published it in this translation, with his own extensive commentary. It was not published in Latin until it appeared in Horsley's edition of Newton's works in 1779. Newton wrote three accounts of the calculus. In the first, De analysi, written in 1669, 'he did not explicitly make use of the fluxionary notation or idea. Instead, he used the infinitely small ... in a manner similar to that found in Barrow and Fermat' (Boyer). The second is the present work, written in 1671: 'in this book Newton introduced his characteristic notation and conceptions (ibid). In the last work, De quadratura curvarum, written in 1676 and published as an appendix to the Opticks in 1704, 'Newton sought to remove all traces on the infinitely small' (ibid).

Er wurde nach dem Tode seines Vaters geboren und wuchs bei der Mutter und Großmutter auf. Er besuchte die Dorfschule, später die Lateinschule des Nachbarstädtchens Grantham. Ein Onkel, der Pfarrer war, bewirkte, daß der Knabe nicht den väterlichen Bauernhof übernehmen mußte, sondern seiner starken Neigung zu mathematischen Studien, experimentellen Untersuchungen und handwerklichen Konstruktionen folgen durfte. So bezog er mit 18 Jahren die Universität Cambridge und hatte dort das Glück, in Isaac Barrow einen Mathematiklehrer zu finden, der seine Begabung förderte. Als 1665 die Pest England heimsuchte, verbrachte Newton zwei Jahre daheim in Woolsthorpe. Er hat selber bekannt, daß er damals in der Blüte seiner schöpferischen Kräfte stand. Extractions: Isaac Newton (1642-1727), the greatest natural philosopher of his age and perhaps any age, came up to the University of Cambridge in 1661, graduating in 1665. In 1669 he succeeded Isaac Barrow in the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics. In 1699 Newton was appointed Master of the Mint, resigning the Lucasian Chair and his Trinity College Fellowship in 1701. He was elected President of the Royal Society in 1703, which post he occupied until his death. After his death, Newton's manuscripts passed to his niece Catherine and her husband John Conduitt. That the papers were not sold at the time owes much to the Conduitts, who appreciated their inestimable scholastic value. In 1740 the Conduitt's daughter, also Catherine, married John Wallop, who became Viscount Lymington when his father was created first Earl of Portsmouth. Their son became the second earl, the manuscripts thus being inherited by succeeding generations of the Portsmouth family. It was the fifth earl who, in 1872, passed all the Newton manuscripts he possessed to the University of Cambridge, where a catalogue of the collection was made by a syndicate comprising the University scientists George Gabriel Stokes, John Couch Adams, Henry Richards Luard and George Downing Liveing. The catalogue having been prepared, the earl generously presented all the mathematical and scientific manuscripts to the University, and it is these that form the 'Portsmouth collection' in the University Library (Add. MSS 3958-4007).
