The Prussian minister of education announced that "a professor who preached such heresies was unworthy to teach science." Current flowing through the metal bar in the center cylinder deflects a magnetized needle suspended above it. The deflection angle is proportional to the current. A seguito del suo allontanamento, Ohm non segue studi ordinati, interessandosi quasi subito alla fisica matematica, ma tuttavia nel 1811 riesce a laurearsi presso l'università di Erlangen e per molti anni si dedica, piuttosto malvolentieri, all'attività didattica, insegnando anche materie lontanissime dalla sua sfera di interessi. Anche Ohm viene coinvolto nel particolare clima dell'anno 1820, che, a seguito della memoria di Oersted , metteva in dubbio concezioni fisiche che sino ad allora erano sembrate intoccabili, ed inizia ad interessarsi dei nuovi, affascinanti problemi. Nella sua prima memoria del 1825, trattante della conducibilità dei conduttori, denuncia la difficoltà di effettuare misure accurate con gli apparati voltaici disponibili, a causa della loro incostanza, cercando comunque di trovare una relazione fra la "perdita di forza" riscontrabile nei conduttori e la loro lunghezza, proponendo una scala della conducibilità che inizia con il rame e termina con il piombo.

Forschend befaßte er sich vorwiegend mit der Elektrotechnik, der Akustik und der Optik. 1826 fand er bei Versuchen mit Thermoelementen das »Ohmsche Gesetz«, das besagt, daß der durch einen Leiter fließende Strom gleich dem Quotienten aus der angelegten Spannung und dem Leiterwiderstand ist. Ohm untersuchte die spezifischen Widerstände zahlreicher Leiter, weswegen die Einheit des elektrischen Widerstands später ihm zu Ehren »Ohm« benannt wurde. 1840 erforschte er die Grund- und Oberschwingungen im Bereich der physiologischen Akustik (»Ohm-Helmholtzsches Gesetz«). Ab 1852 widmete er sich der Untersuchung optischer Interferenzphänomene.
