Il padre, magistrato, trasferitosi a Parigi, curò personalmente la sua educazione; Blaise si dimostrò così precoce nello studio della fisica e dalla matematica da essere ammesso alle riunioni scientifiche organizzate da padre Mersenne che era in corrispondenza coi più grandi ricercatori del tempo: da Galilei a Torricelli, da Fermat a Descartes. Appena sedicenne, pubblicò il suo primo scritto scientifico, un Saggio sulle coniche , che comprendeva tra l'altro il teorema concernente l'esagono iscritto in una conica qualsiasi (teorema di Pascal). Dal 1640 al 1647 soggiornò a Rouen, ove il padre era stato invitato da Richelieu per una missione di amministrazione fiscale. Proprio al fine di agevolare i calcoli delle imposte, Pascal progettò nel 1642 una macchina aritmetica a ingranaggi ( pascaline ) che metterà a punto in modo definitivo nel 1652. Durante il soggiorno a Rouen, ove ebbe peraltro modo di stabilire i primi contatti col movimento giansenista (1646), cominciò a dedicarsi intensamente allo studio del problema del vuoto, allora di grandissima attualità.     Extractions: Goethe called the double-entry bookkeeping system "one of the most beautiful inventions of the human spirit"; the national economist Werner Sombart compared it to Galilei's system. It combines the mathematically necessary with everyday usefulness and perfect control, yes, even with a conclusive optic that takes the golden section into the accounting science. We cannot strive for a higher goal - this is why, even after half a millenium, we can still see Pacioli as a role model. As a Franciscan monk he was introduced to the mysticism of numbers; as a practical thinking educator, he did not want to serve only God with numbers, but also people. In 1494, his "manual of applied mathematics" was published. Contrary to the Latin style of the era, it was written in Italian, the language of the people - because he wanted to make this abstract science useful for the citizens. Thus, the third section of the book was about double-entry bookkeeping. Among the merchants of Venice, where Pacioli was introduced to this method, it had already been common practice for two centuries - but only Pacioli elevated it to a system and a requirement. He further gave it its layout of an open double-page with the liabilities on the left and the assets on the right. Leonardo da Vinci was deeply impressed by Pacioli's teachings. They became friends, and da Vinci illustrated Pacioli's book on the golden section.

Recently discovered early 15th Century Venetian Bookkeeping Instructions A few months ago Johanna Postma and Anne J. van der Helm discovered a third manuscript, dated 1475, of Benedetto COTRUGLI's "LIBRO DE L'ARTE DE LA MERCATURA" in the National Library of Malta, Vallette (copyist was Marino de Raphaeli de Ragusa). The themes are very realistic: all kinds of trade with taxes, brokerage and other costs, "Camera d'Imprestedi", partnerships, letters of exchange, commercial voyages (to one's own account, to the account of the partnership or commissioned to someone else) to Beirut, Alexandria and Spain, ship insurance, silk industry (from coccons bought to silk sold), building houses, let and rent of houses, barter (corn for slaves for example).

Perhaps no other work so epitomizes the deep Renaissance connection between art and mathematics. Pacioli (a Franciscan friar, shown in his robes) stands at a table filled with geometrical tools (slate, chalk, compass, protractor, dodecahedron model, etc.), illustrating a theorem from Euclid, while examining a beautiful glass rhombicuboctahedron half-filled with water. Every aspect of the picture has been composed meaningfully, and art historians have analyzed it at length, yet the figure at right remains a mystery. For two rather different conclusions, see the references by M. Davis (who suspects the figure is a self-portrait of the painter) and N. MacKinnon (who speculates that the figure is Albrecht Durer). The polyhedron in the painting is a masterpiece of reflection, refraction, and perspective. (Davis states that the bright region on its surface reflects a view out an open window, showing the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino.) Certainly an actual glass polyhedron was used as a model. (Pacioli states in his books that he constructed several sets of glass polyhedra, but I know of no other information about them.) The polyhedron in the painting is beautifully positioned, suspended with a 3-fold axis vertical, out of physical contact with the other objects in the scene. I suspect that Pacioli chose it for the portrait because he discovered this form and was quite proud of it. (Presumably Archimedes first discovered it, but that wasn't known in Pacioli's time.) E’ il ritratto del nostro frate francescano Luca Pacioli dell'ordine dei Minori Conventuali, sul tavolo del dipinto spiccano gli strumenti del matematico: gesso, una spugnetta, goniometro, il compasso, la penna. Il libro è aperto su una pagina degli "Elementi" di Euclide, confermando che il Pacioli fu studioso di Euclide. Sulla lavagna è tracciato un problema descritto nel Libro XII del trattato euclideo. Sulla destra, invece, vi è un grosso volume rilegato in rosso con una iscrizione (LI.RI.LUC.BUR. ovvero Liber reverendi Luca Burgensis). E proprio il famoso libro di cui parliamo nel nostro scritto, la "Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria e Proportione" di Luca Pacioli. Sono poi raffigurati, uno sul tavolo sopra il libro e l'altro in alto trasparente, due poliedri che servivano al Pacioli per i suoi studi. A destra del quadro un piccolo cartello aperto reca l'iscrizione "CO.BAR.VIGEN/NIS 1495" sul cartellino è dipinta anche una piccola mosca. Quella scritta "vigennis" è soggetta ad una infinita serie di interpretazioni sin dal primo acquisto (1903) del dipinto.

Figura umanistico - rinascimentale, insigne matematico ed umanista al pari di Piero della Francesca (del quale fu allievo) e di Leonardo con i quali approfondì le proprie conoscenze matematiche e scientifiche che gli consentirono la stesura della SUMMA e di altri trattati su cui ancor oggi si basa la moderna ragioneria, studi che gli valsero l'appellativo di "ragioniere di Leonardo". Studiò matematica a Venezia e viaggiò a lungo per conto del commerciante veneziano Antonio Rompiasi per i cui figli, nel 1470, compilò un primo trattato di matematica. Qualche anno più tardi entrò a far parte dell'ordine dei frati minori francescani e si dedicò allo studio della teologia e della filosofia. Insegnò a Perugia, Venezia, Firenze, Milano Pisa, Bologna e Roma, ove morì certamente dopo il 1509, forse nel 1514.
