Extractions: Updated - Friday, 30 November, 2001 Paul Painleve (1863-1933), the celebrated mathematician and politician, was the shortest serving French Prime Minister of the war - at just two months - and easily its least experienced. Painleve's mathematical achievements saw him teach as a professor at the Sorbonne, the Ecole Polytechnique and at the University of Lille. He won the Grand Prix des Sciences Mathematiques in 1890 and was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1900. In political terms Painleve entered parliament rather late in life, at the age of 43 in 1906. There he quickly established himself at the head of the small Republican-Socialist group. Taking a keen interest in the military conduct of the war from the start - he was especially interested in aviation and was Wilbur Wright's first French passenger in 1908 - Painleve was both an ardent 'easterner' (which led him to aggressively champion General Sarrail's cause during the summer of 1915) and a firm believer in Petain's policy of defensive strategy.

He left home in 1798 and thereafter toured from country to country, gaining fame as a violinist of exceptional talent. In 1833 he settled in Paris, playing at concerts and running a gambling house for the rest of his life. Apart from the many stories about his private life, his chief claim to fame was in his discovering the use of stopped harmonics, inventing the combination of air and pizzicato accompaniment, and the imitations of guitar-slides. He composed many pieces for the violin. PAGENSTECHER, Hermann (1844-1932) German oculist. He was directing physician of the famous eye hospital at Wiesbaden founded by his brother Alexander in 1857. Extractions: (5th Arrondissement) Paris is one of the main gateways for many long distance visitors to the Western Front. The city has several sites of Great War interest which are worth a visit if you are in town. In 1914 and 1918 Paris was not far from the front during the Marne battles. It was also subject to air raids and in the spring of 1918 shelling by the so-called "Big Berthas". At all times it was a major hub of activity, with various headquarters, base hospitals etc. being stationed in the city. The following description consists of what I have discovered to date on numerous trips into town. It is far from definitive and I would be keen to hear of other sites. I had not previously known about many of them, and only came across them by accident when driving around. I recommend using the Metro or buses instead: a street plan will show which Metro stops to use. Like many popular tourist guides, I will describe the sites by the quarter or "arrondissement" in which they are found. The 5th Arrondissement The most famous tourist landmark of the 5th Arrondissement is the Pantheon
