Nato nel 1908 ad Akron, nell'Ohio, Quine studiò logica e filosofia ad Harvard; nel 1933-1934 entrò in contatto, in Europa, con parecchi positivisti logici, specialmente con Carnap, ed insegnò poi all'università di Harvard. Fu autore di numerose opere, tra le quali vanno ricordate Metodi della logica (1950) , la raccolta di saggi Da un punto di vista logico Parola e oggetto I modi del paradosso e altri saggi Relatività ontologica e altri saggi Filosofia della logica Le radici del riferimento (1974). La logica per Quine non é solo una tecnica del ragionamento, ma, come ogni altra scienza, ha il compito di ricercare la verità, separando gli enunciati veri da quelli falsi. Essa ha un carattere più generale rispetto alle singole scienze, nè é la struttura comune ed é uno strumento comunicativo più soddisfacente e preciso del linguaggio naturale, che deve dunque essere controllato e riformato mediante la logica. Nell'articolo Su ciò che vi é Quine mostra che l'accettazione di una specifica teoria logica impegna ontologicamente, cioè comporta l'assunzione dell'esistenza di determinate classi di oggetti.
