    Extractions: In 1871, Rayleigh explained that the blue colour of the sky arises from the scattering of light by dust particles in the air, and was able to relate the degree of scattering to the wavelength of the light. He also made the first accurate definition of the resolving power of diffraction gratings, which led to improvements in the spectroscope. He completed in 1884 the standardization of the three basic electrical units: the ohm, ampere, and volt. His insistence on accuracy prompted the designing of more precise electrical instruments.

En 1861 il est entré au collège(à Université) de Trinité, le Cambridge, où il a commencé des mathématiques lisantes, pas à premier égal dans des pratiques au mieux de ses contemporains, mais ses capacités exceptionnelles lui ont bientôt permis de rattraper ses concurrents. Il a obtenu un diplôme dans Tripos Mathématique en 1865 comme le Querelleur Senior et le Décoré du Forgeron. En 1866 il a obtenu une camaraderie à la Trinité qu'il s'est tenue jusqu'à 1871, l'année de son mariage.

Thomas Leisner and colleagues at Ilmenau Technical University in Germany used high-speed microscopic imaging to observe the "Rayleigh jets" that are produced when a charged droplet of liquid becomes unstable and explodes (D.Duft et al. 2003 Nature 421 128). Electrified droplets are routinely used in various technological applications, including ink-jet printing and some forms of mass spectrometry. The Ilmenau group became interested in Rayleigh jets as a result of its research on thunderstorm clouds, which also contain highly charged droplets. Lord Rayleigh showed that, for a given charge, droplets are only stable when their radius exceeds the "Rayleigh limit". This limit relates the maximum charge that a droplet can bear to its surface tension and radius. Rayleigh suggested that when a charged droplet becomes unstable, it ejects a microscopic jet of liquid from each end before returning to equilibrium. Prior to the Ilmenau work, researchers believed that droplets managed to get rid of their charge without undergoing a "global" deformation of the whole droplet. Physicists have observed that highly charged droplets, which are slowly evaporating, become unstable at a certain limit and lose a large fraction of their charge but only a small fraction of their mass. It is not certain, however, that the droplets become unstable at or beyond the Rayleigh limit.

He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1861, graduating in 1864. His first paper in 1865 was on Maxwell 's electromagnetic theory. He worked on propogation of sound and, while on an excursion to Egypt taken for health reasons, Strutt wrote Treatise on Sound (1870-1). In 1879 he wrote a paper on travelling waves, this theory has now developed into the theory of solitons. His theory of scattering (1871) was the first correct explanation of why the sky is blue. In 1873 he succeeded to the title of Baron Rayleigh. From 1879 to 84 he was the second Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge succeeding Maxwell . Then in 1884 he became secretary of the Royal Society. Rayleigh discovered the inert gas argon in 1895, work which earned him a Nobel Prize, in 1904.
