Extractions: Billed as two separate shows, but gradually melting into one another, are exhibitions from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., called "A Brush with History" (an interesting use of English which may or may not be appreciated in Japan), and a selection of historical paintings and sublime landscapes called "American Heroism," from various American museums. Statue of Liberty Enlightening the world by Edward P. Moran The gathered selection of these paintings was a major undertaking. It all started six years ago when President Bill Clinton promised Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama a major art exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty. The portraits of famous Americans offer the works of well known and some very famous artists. Seventy-five well-known personalities from all walks of American life, from Ben Franklin to Michael Jackson. A few of the paintings appeared as covers for Time magazine. Even though the subjects are all Americans, not all of the artists are. For example, the exciting portrait of the American painter Mary Cassatt was painted in Paris in the early 1880s by the French master Edgar Degas. The exhibit is a virtual who's who in American art and history. I found the paintings which were most stimulating were those which depict artists, poets, musicians and other intellectuals.

He was the son of a former slave, born and raised during a period of segregation, lynching, and open racism. He earned a four-year scholarship to Rutgers University, making him the third African American to attend the school. There he was a member of the prestigious Cap and Skull Honor Society, played four varsity sports (baseball, football, basketball, and track), won speech and debate tournaments, and managed to graduate valedictorian of his class. After graduation, Robeson applied his athletic abilities to a short career in professional football. Aside from his prowess on the gridiron, he earned a law degree and changed the direction of his career. His legal career was cut short, however, after a secretary refused to take dictation from him solely because of the color of his skin. He left law and turned to his childhood love of acting and singing. Robeson starred in Shakespeare's

Extractions: In the African American struggle to end racial discrimination in the United States, no one played a more salient role than Thurgood Marshall. Having been denied admission to the University of Maryland's Law School because of his race, Marshall enrolled at Howard University, where he graduated with highest honors. In 1935 he was was invited to join the legal staff of the NAACP under its chief counsel Charles Houston, Howard's former dean. Ironically, Marshall's first significant victory, Pearson v. Murray , awarded African Americans the right to study at the University of Maryland Law School. In 1938 Marshall succeeded Houston as national special counsel, responsible for all cases involving citizenship rights for blacks. In 1950, Marshall was named director-counsel of the NAACP's Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where he spearheaded the elimination of practices and laws that prevented blacks from enjoying their full rights of citizenship. Among his greatest triumphs was the 1954 United States Supreme Court case Brown v. the Board of Education

Prominent white families who noticed her exceptional intellect welcomed her into their homes, providing her with room and board and the opportunity to study. She eventually attended Oberlin College, mastered Latin, Greek, and mathematics, and graduated in 1865. Coppin was committed to educating the masses of newly freed black peopleand to dispelling the myth that blacks could not learn because of intellectual inferiority. Later, she became a teacher at the Quakers Institute for Colored Youth. During one of her classes, she invited an Englishman to take over the class and observe her students. He commented afterward: They are more capable of examining me. Their proficiency is wonderful. Coppin State College in Baltimore, Maryland, is named after Fannie Jackson Coppin. Name: Dr. Patrick Francis Healy Occupation: Roman Catholic Bishop Patrick Healy was one of five children born to Michael Healy, a transplanted white Irishman, and Mary Eliza Healy, a former slave. By Georgia law, their children could have been sold as slavesan action once suggested to the Healys by a group of white planters, who were subsequently run off the Healy property by dogs on Michaels command. He and Mary Eliza dedicated themselves to providing an education and opportunity for their children, and their efforts were well rewarded.
