Recipients are singled out for their unswerving dedication to the goals of SPAWN, namely the preservation and enhancement of our salmonid stocks. The SPAWN Hall of Fame Award for 1999 will be jointly awarded. The two recipients were both very important to SPAWN in the founding years: H. Jack Adderley, formerly publisher of the Western Star and the late Rocky Schulstad, formerly Public Relations Director for Bowaters Pulp and Paper. The award will be presented at our annual dinner to take place in October of this current year. The recipients have been singled out from a number of very deserving nominees for similar reasons: Mr. Adderley was very generous with his advice and guidance for press releases and public relations as was Mr. Schulstad. Both took a very strong interest in SPAWNER and in 1981 when we were having great difficulty in getting our material set up for the magazine Jack had his staff assist with the typesetting, while Rocky guided us with the paste-up. In addition Rocky supplied some great photos including the cover for our first edition in 1979. Jack was our technical advisor for SPAWNER for several years, while Rocky was our photography advisor. Together they enabled us to get our early magazines published. Both gentlemen were great sportsmen and true conservationists and helped build our magazine and the SPAWN organization.

Try trolling flies and spoons for these and have some patience for the fish to turn on. Salmon seem finicky do to the changes in the weather and it's effect on the water temperature. We expect the salmon will be on the bite within the next two weeks. It seems the drastic changes in the weather from 90 degree days to snowy days has affected the salmon bite to be on then off. Some salmon have been caught but not as many as we would of expected at this time of year, but that will change very shortly. Lets Go Fishing Lake George is one of the north countries finest grand slam fishing hot spots in the northeast. With breathtaking views and pristine waters, you will experience some of the most exciting sport fishing you will encounter anywhere. Beautiful Lake George is 35 miles long and runs through the northeast section of the Adirondack Park. With over 300 islands the lake runs to depths of 190 feet.

It traces its title back to a conveyance from the pristine State of New York in 1792. The issue is whether Douglaston's ownership entitles it to exclude the public from fishing in, though not from navigating through, its portion of the river. Douglaston's property encompasses the shoreline properties, the riverbed, and ten islands within and along the Salmon River. It operates the Douglaston Salmon Run within its section of the river. Salmon Run is an exclusively-managed private sport fishery from which the general public is excluded and for which users pay Douglaston a fee. Douglaston provides security for the property and has constructed support facilities for the benefit of its patrons, including a parking lot and stairways down to the river's edge. It pays taxes upon the entire property, including riverbed land.

Extractions: For the past ten years, George has been exploring impressionism through the use of pastels. His work is vibrant, colorful, and evokes a sense of light. The painting below left, entitled The Strike. Salmon Under Water , is one of several pastels shown recently at The American Museum of Fly-Fishing in Vermont. His angling subjects range from the Bahamas and Florida Keys to New England, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. See prints of these subjects and more at the George Thomas on-line print shop His angling scenes, catboats, and dories are also available as signed and numbered prints. He has done over 80 editions of prints based on his paintings. Much of George's work is Marine, dealing with the sea and seashores, boating and sailing, as well as harbors, rivers, and lakes. For many years he has drawn and painted boats of many sorts. The recent pastel below, Yellow Dory is one of a series painted featuring this variety of workboat. Extractions: This years purchase of Atlantic Salmon from the Chateauqay fish hatchery has been placed on hold. According to Garth Stephen, due to predators (a family of otters) and drought conditions the Chateauqay Hatchery has lost 400 of the 500 Salmon he had set aside for us to stock this fall into Lake George. We have decided at our November meeting that we want the balance of 100 salmon to stock in the spring of 2002.

Thus, as an example of Salmon's controversial tone, it may be observed that after stating that in the Tracts for the Times Newman and his co-adjutors, being then Protestants, had published "excellent refutations of the Roman doctrine on purgatory and on some other points" he goes on to say that, on joining the Church, these men "bound themselves to believe and teach as true things which they had themselves proved to be false." The word "proved" here may or may not be meant to suggest that these converts were insincere in their profession of doctrines against which they had formerly argued. It certainly leaves an unpleasant flavour on the tongue, and it would have been easy to substitute "rejected as false" for "proved to be false." A writer who can either cleverly or negligently arouse such suspicions by the casual use of a single word needs to be watched carefully when he comes to make broad historical statements.

Pilot Peak lookout stands as a sentinel against a radiant blue sky across the deep gorge of the South Fork of the Salmon River. That was my first impression of the South Fork, and it's an impression that has stayed with me ever since. So too was the impression of fire. I was smokejumper, and we had parachuted into the canyon to extinguish a burning tree. With our work now complete, and the tree smoldering as a harmless warming fire, I was able to enjoy a view of the South Fork country and reflect upon the close call getting there. Earlier when I exited the Twin Otter I had tried a "spread eagle" instead of the standard exit and badly twisted my parachute. Spinning like a top, I wound in one direction and then unwound the other way. I had only untwisted a few hundred feet off the ground just in time to steer between the towering yellowpines before landing on the steep river breaks. While untwisting I had gotten above Carl's chute which caused his to take my air and mine partially collapsed. When this happens near the ground, smokejumpers have broken their backs. I fell into his chute and actually slid down his canopy and off the edge until mine inflated again.
