   Extractions: Edward Sang , mathematician, engineer and actuary, was the 6th of 11 children of Edward Sang (1771-1862), nurseryman and sometime Provost of Kirkcaldy, and his wife Jean Nicol (b.1773) a sister of William Nicol (b.1768) who invented the Nicol prism. He attended a subscription school, founded by his father and others, under a gifted headmaster Edward Irving. At Edinburgh University during 1818 - 1824, he impressed professors William Wallace and John Leslie in mathematics and natural philosophy, despite periods of illness. Small for his age, he was first mocked by fellow-students, then admired for his precocious talent. Sang first worked in Edinburgh as surveyor, civil engineer and mathematics teacher and lectured on natural philosophy. During 1841-43 he was Professor of Mechanical Sciences at the nonconformist Manchester New College, then went to Constantinople to establish engineering schools, plan railways and an ironworks. He lectured (in Turkish) at the Imperial School, Muhendis-hana Berii and gained fame by predicting the solar eclipse of 1847, thereby dispelling superstition. He resigned against the Sultan's wishes, returning to Edinburgh in 1854 to teach mathematics. An active Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, he received awards from both and from the Institution of Civil Engineers, London (1879). He was a founder member and first official lecturer of the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland, a corresponding member of the Royal Tunis Academy, an Ll.D. of Edinburgh University and an honorary member of the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia. He married Isabella Elmslie in 1832 and had at least three daughters and at least one son.

Brother Patrick joined the Order of Carmelites in September 1996 with Brother Dermot (who made his Solemn Profession in November 2002) and, after a year of novitiate, made his Simple Profession as a Carmelite in September 1997. He then completed his theological studies at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy. In October 2001, he made his Solemn Profession in the Order. While all members of the Order of Carmelites are, first and foremost, brothers and therefore are all equal, some also go forward for Ordination as Deacon and Priest. Over the last few years Brother Patrick gave careful consideration to this step and made his application for Holy Orders. In December 2001, he was Ordained to the Diaconate by Bishop Walsh, an Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Dublin. Since then, Brother Patrick has been assisting in the work of the parish through his preaching, through administering the Sacrament of Baptism, through presiding at Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and in many other ways which are not always seen by the public. During this time Brother Patrick made application for Ordination as Priest and he was Ordained by Bishop Field, an Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Dublin on August 24, 2002, the Feast of St Bartholomew the Apostle. The Ordination Rite takes place during the celebration of the Mass which began with the procession to the sanctuary by the servers, the concelebrating priests, the ordinand and the ordaining prelate while the choir sang “All people that on earth do dwell.” Brother Patrick was joined by his family and friends and the local parish community and for the early part of the ceremony he sat with his family. By sitting with and then coming from his family the one to be ordained demonstrates that he is part of the people of God and that he comes from amongst them to lead them towards God.

Logarithms belong to the first half of our professions history, the half shared with Dickens’s Hard Times of the smoking chimneys stacks, pounding steam engines, and dark canals. The apprenticeship of the early actuary, log tables in left hand and pencil scribbling in right, does not strike us as appealing – that is, until it is compared to the alternative toils of that grim time. It is not so odd then that there is no word to describe a person that loves calculating log tables. Yet such a word is needed to describe two of the 38 gentlemen that constituted the Faculty of Actuaries in January 1956. But Ebenezer Erskine Scott and Edward Sang were not equals in their devotion; for Mr Scott it was just an infatuation. Dr Sang had it bad. The numbers are mind-numbing.
