Extractions: When redevelopment in 1961 led to the demolition of their original building, Pooles, unable to find suitable premises in Savile Row, were forced to move to a modern site in Cork Street. In 1982, however, they were able to return to their traditional home and moved into a beautiful Victorian building at number 15. The original house at number 15 was built for the Countess of Suffolk in 1733. It remained a residence until 1871 when a famous London Club moved in, changing its name to the Savile Club. Many eminent members used the building including Arthur Balfour (a future Prime Minister), Robert Louis Stevenson the author and Sir Henry Irving, the famous Victorian actor and also a customer of Pooles. After the Club moved in 1881 to larger premises in Brook Street, the Regency building was demolished. By 1887 the present building was completed and the ground floor occupied by a firm of tailors.

Extractions: Ilbert de Lacy was awarded the Manor of Methley along with many others as a reward for services rendered by William the Conqueror. The land had previously been held by Osulf and Cnut (Canute?) who may have been of Saxon or Norse extraction. By the end of the 13th century the Manor had passed into the de Methley family. In 1312 John de Methley In 1408 the Master of the Hospital released to John Waterton of Lincolnshire the rights to Woodhall in Methley which were lands and tenements situated in Woodhall which were part of the Manor of Methley. In 1410 the Master of the Hospitall of Pontefract transferred to Robert Waterton, the Manor of Methley in exchange for Manors in Lincolnshire and Wath-on-Dearne thus making John Waterton a tenant of his brother Robert. Sir Robert Waterton the new Lord of the Manor it would seem was a man of great importance. It was reported that in 1399 he had been appointed Master of the Kings Horses and Armour. He was a confidant of Henry IV and was described in 1404 as the Kings Esquire, he also became Master of the Kings Hounds. Five years after the success of the longbow (Armour) in 1415 at Agincourt he was commissioned by the King to pursuade the Gentlemen of Yorkshire to proceed to the war in France (2nd phase of the 100 Years War). He married Cecily Fleming heir of the Woodhall estate in Stanley nearby, like his brother he was a soldier and between them they served four kings from Richard II to Henry VI. Sir Roberts son died and his successor, the young Sir Robert who was to become High Sherriff of Yorkshire in 1441 died in 1476 leaving no offspring and the estate was split to the 4 daughters of his sister Cecelia.

Extractions: Chapter 1: 800 years of mathematical traditions During the seventeenth century the Oxford antiquarian interest in preserving the records of the past became subsumed in an interest in the history of mathematics itself. A number of influences came together to create a historical approach to mathematics which has characterized the Oxford tradition. Sir Henry Savile was crucial: in laying down statutes for the Chairs of geometry and astronomy, Savile gave instructions for the subjects to be taught by exegesis of the great texts of the past, principally Euclid's Elements and Ptolemy's Almagest. Another influence on the style of mathematics was the creation at this time of the Bodleian Library, by Savile's friend Sir Thomas Bodley. This, together with a smaller library attached to the Savilian Chairs, ensured the availability of many books and manuscripts for scholarly purposes. The influence of the time is also seen in the spirit of investigation evident in the work of the Royal Society, founded in 1660 by a group of people many of whom had Oxford connections. In the activities of the Royal Society the history of a subject of concern was an essential part of how it presented itself for understanding, categorization, or analysis. Thus, when John Wallis wrote his great Treatise of algebra (1685) as a study of algebra seen through its development from earliest times, it was at once the first algebra text on this scale and the first history of mathematics written in English. The way in which Wallis presented mathematics as something intrinsically bound up with its history can be seen as a development particularly characteristic of Oxford, in which knowledge from the past is explored and built upon in order to make future progress, as much in mathematics as in any other subject.

THE DELL The houses in Ashby Dell were built by Sir Samuel Morton Peto of Somerleyton Hall in 1846 for the benefit of the farmworkers on the Ashby Hall Farm. Over the years many families have lived in the Dell, each contributing in their own way to preserving and maintaining the lovely rural setting. They tended their pretty cottage gardens and their children played happily in a natural safe playground. They all helped with the upkeep of the Church as it was the people of the Dell who cleaned the Church, did what repairs they could to the fabric, tended the oil lamps and kept the gravestones and Churchyard tidy. Ashby Dell was also well known for the Donkey Close which was situated behind the Old Rectory. Here the donkeys were kept, t fetch and carry the washing from as far away as Lowestoft. Coppers were lit at 5 a.m., lines were full of washing and deliveries
